Health surveillance for occupational asthma in the UK
Background Periodic health surveillance (HS) of workers can identify early cases of occupational asthma.
Information about its uptake and its content in the UK is lacking.
Aims To identify the overall levels of uptake and quality of HS for occupational asthma within three high risk
industry sectors in the UK.
Methods A telephone survey of employers, and their occupational health (OH) professionals, carried out in
three sectors with exposures potentially capable of causing occupational asthma (bakeries, wood
working and motor vehicle repair).
Results A total of 457 organizations participated (31% response rate). About 77% employed <10 people,
17% between 10 and 50 and 6% >50. Risk assessments were common (67%) and 14% carried out
some form of HS for occupational asthma, rising to 19% if only organizations reporting asthma hazards
and risks were considered. HS was carried out both by in-house (31%) and external providers
(69%). Organizational policies were often used to define HS approaches (80%), but infrequently
shared with the OH provider. OH providers described considerable variation in practice. Record
keeping was universal, but worker-held records were not reported. HS tools were generally developed
in-house. Lung function was commonly measured, but only limited interpretation evident.
Referral of workers to local specialist respiratory services was variable.
Conclusions This study provided new insights into the real world of HS for occupational asthma. We consider that
future work could and should define simpler, more practical and evidence-based approaches to HS
to ensure maximal consistency and use of high-quality approaches

Copycat dynamics in leaderless animal group navigation
Background: Many animals are known to have improved navigational efficiency when moving together as a social group. One potential mechanism for social group navigation is known as the 'many wrongs principle', where information from many inaccurate compasses is pooled across the group. In order to understand how animal groups may use the many wrongs principle to navigate, it is important to consider how directional information is transferred and shared within the group. Methods: Here we use an individual-based model to explore the information-sharing and copying dynamics of a leaderless animal group navigating towards a target in a virtual environment. We assume that communication and information-sharing is indirect and arises through individuals partially copying the movement direction of their neighbours and weighting this information relative to their individual navigational knowledge. Results: We find that the best group navigation performance occurs when individuals directly copy the direction of movement of a subset of their neighbours while only giving a small (6%) weighting to their individual navigational knowledge. Surprisingly, such a strategy is shown to be highly efficient regardless of the level of individual navigational error. We find there is little relative improvement in navigational efficiency when individuals copy from more than 7 influential neighbours. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that we would expect navigating group-living animals to predominantly copy the movement of others rather than relying on their own navigational knowledge. ’We do not have a writing culture’: exploring the nature of ‘academic drift’ through a study of lecturer perspectives on student writing in a vocational university
Vocational universities are increasingly becoming susceptible to pressures associated with the phenomenon known as ‘academic drift’. Yet the specific influence of such pressures is experienced differently at various institutional levels and by different stakeholders in such universities. Exploring lecturers’ understanding and perceptions of student academic writing can make visible the ways in which these pressures are realised, for example, in the types of writing given value and writing pedagogies deemed suitable in the context of the vocational university. In this paper, we report on an ethnographically shaped study exploring lecturers’ writing pedagogies and perceptions of students as academic writers at a South African vocational university. The study analytically illustrated how wider socio-political, regulatory and ideological framings of these universities were implicated in lecturers’ writing practices and pedagogies. The study found that lecturers and students were generally constricted by narrow vocationalist agendas, which reinforced negative conceptions of students as academic writers. Our findings suggest that while the explicit impact of academic drift drivers was minimally felt at the undergraduate diploma level of study in our research site, this appeared to close off the potential for writing to act as a means to facilitate students’ epistemic access to their disciplines
Universality, limits and predictability of gold-medal performances at the Olympic Games
Inspired by the Games held in ancient Greece, modern Olympics represent the
world's largest pageant of athletic skill and competitive spirit. Performances
of athletes at the Olympic Games mirror, since 1896, human potentialities in
sports, and thus provide an optimal source of information for studying the
evolution of sport achievements and predicting the limits that athletes can
reach. Unfortunately, the models introduced so far for the description of
athlete performances at the Olympics are either sophisticated or unrealistic,
and more importantly, do not provide a unified theory for sport performances.
Here, we address this issue by showing that relative performance improvements
of medal winners at the Olympics are normally distributed, implying that the
evolution of performance values can be described in good approximation as an
exponential approach to an a priori unknown limiting performance value. This
law holds for all specialties in athletics-including running, jumping, and
throwing-and swimming. We present a self-consistent method, based on normality
hypothesis testing, able to predict limiting performance values in all
specialties. We further quantify the most likely years in which athletes will
breach challenging performance walls in running, jumping, throwing, and
swimming events, as well as the probability that new world records will be

Semiclassical ionization dynamics of the hydrogen molecular ion in an electric field of arbitrary orientation
Quasi-static models of barrier suppression have played a major role in our
understanding of the ionization of atoms and molecules in strong laser fields.
Despite their success, in the case of diatomic molecules these studies have so
far been restricted to fields aligned with the molecular axis. In this paper we
investigate the locations and heights of the potential barriers in the hydrogen
molecular ion in an electric field of arbitrary orientation. We find that the
barriers undergo bifurcations as the external field strength and direction are
varied. This phenomenon represents an unexpected level of intricacy even on
this most elementary level of the dynamics. We describe the dynamics of
tunnelling ionization through the barriers semiclassically and use our results
to shed new light on the success of a recent theory of molecular tunnelling
ionization as well as earlier theories that restrict the electric field to be
aligned with the molecular axis
Neutron skin of Pb from Coherent Pion Photoproduction
Information on the size and shape of the neutron skin on Pb has been
extracted from coherent pion photoproduction cross sections measured using the
Crystal Ball together with the Glasgow tagger at the MAMI electron beam
facility. On exploitation of an interpolated fit of a theoretical model to the
measured cross sections the half-height radius and diffuseness of the neutron
distribution are found to be 6.70 fm and 0.55 fm respectively, corresponding to a neutron
skin thickness =0.15 fm.
The results give the first successful extraction of a neutron skin with an
electromagnetic probe and indicate the skin of Pb has a halo character.
The measurement provides valuable new constraints on both the structure of

Determination of the Dalitz plot parameter alpha for the decay eta->3pi^0 with the Crystal Ball at MAMI-B
A precise measurement of the Dalitz plot parameter, alpha, for the eta->3pi^0
decay is presented. The experiment was performed with the Crystal Ball and TAPS
large acceptance photon detectors at the tagged photon beam facility of the
MAMI-B electron accelerator in Mainz. High statistics of 1.8*10^6 eta->3pi^0
events were obtained, giving the result alpha = -0.032 +/- 0.002(stat) +/-
