Entropic effects on the Size Evolution of Cluster Structure
We show that the vibrational entropy can play a crucial role in determining
the equilibrium structure of clusters by constructing structural phase diagrams
showing how the structure depends upon both size and temperature. These phase
diagrams are obtained for example rare gas and metal clusters.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Reanalysis of the GALLEX solar neutrino flux and source experiments
After the completion of the gallium solar neutrino experiments at the
Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (GALLEX}: 1991-1997; GNO: 1998-2003) we
have retrospectively updated the GALLEX results with the help of new technical
data that were impossible to acquire for principle reasons before the
completion of the low rate measurement phase (that is, before the end of the
GNO solar runs). Subsequent high rate experiments have allowed the calibration
of absolute internal counter efficiencies and of an advanced pulse shape
analysis for counter background discrimination. The updated overall result for
GALLEX (only) is (73.4 +7.1 -7.3) SNU. This is 5.3% below the old value of
(77.5 + 7.5 -7.8) SNU (PLB 447 (1999) 127-133) with a substantially reduced
error. A similar reduction is obtained from the reanalysis of the 51Cr neutrino
source experiments of 1994/1995.Comment: Accepted by Physics Letters B January 13, 201
Measurement of the Solar Neutrino Capture Rate by the Russian-American Gallium Solar Neutrino Experiment During One Half of the 22-Year Cycle of Solar Activity
We present the results of measurements of the solar neutrino capture rate in
gallium metal by the Russian-American Gallium Experiment SAGE during slightly
more than half of a 22-year cycle of solar activity. Combined analysis of the
data of 92 runs during the 12-year period January 1990 through December 2001
gives a capture rate of solar neutrinos with energy more than 233 keV of 70.8
+5.3/-5.2 (stat.) +3.7/-3.2 (syst.) SNU. This represents only slightly more
than half of the predicted standard solar model rate of 128 SNU. We give the
results of new runs beginning in April 1998 and the results of combined
analysis of all runs since 1990 during yearly, monthly, and bimonthly periods.
Using a simple analysis of the SAGE results combined with those from all other
solar neutrino experiments, we estimate the electron neutrino pp flux that
reaches the Earth to be (4.6 +/- 1.1) E10/(cm^2-s). Assuming that neutrinos
oscillate to active flavors the pp neutrino flux emitted in the solar fusion
reaction is approximately (7.7 +/- 1.8) E10/(cm^2-s), in agreement with the
standard solar model calculation of (5.95 +/- 0.06) E10/(cm^2-s).Comment: English translation of article submitted to Russian journal Zh. Eksp.

Symplectic Symmetry of the Neutrino Mass and the See-Saw Mechanism
We investigate the algebraic structure of the most general neutrino mass
Hamiltonian and place the see-saw mechanism in an algebraic framework. We show
that this Hamiltonian can be written in terms of the generators of an Sp(4)
algebra. The Pauli-Gursey transformation is an SU(2) rotation which is embedded
in this Sp(4) group. This SU(2) also generates the see-saw mechanism.Comment: 11 pages, REVTE
Implications of the SNO and the Homestake Results for the BOREXINO Experiment
Using the recent result of the SNO solar neutrino experiment, we have
demonstrated in a model independent way that the contribution of Be-7 and other
medium energy neutrinos to the event rate of the Homestake experiment is 4
sigma smaller than the BP2000 SSM prediction. We have considered the
implications of this result for the future BOREXINO experiment.Comment: 9 pages, no figure
Neutrino Unification
Present neutrino data are consistent with neutrino masses arising from a
common seed at some ``neutrino unification'' scale . Such a simple
theoretical ansatz naturally leads to quasi-degenerate neutrinos that could lie
in the electron-volt range with neutrino mass splittings induced by
renormalization effects associated with supersymmetric thresholds. In such a
scheme the leptonic analogue of the Cabibbo angle describing
solar neutrino oscillations is nearly maximal. Its exact value is correlated
with the smallness of . These features agree both with latest
data on the solar neutrino spectra and with the reactor neutrino data. The two
leading mass-eigenstate neutrinos present in \ne form a pseudo-Dirac neutrino,
avoiding conflict with neutrinoless double beta decay.Comment: RevTex format, 2 figures, 4 pages, a few new references, no other

Measurement of the solar neutrino capture rate with gallium metal
The solar neutrino capture rate measured by the Russian-American Gallium
Experiment (SAGE) on metallic gallium during the period January 1990 through
December 1997 is 67.2 (+7.2-7.0) (+3.5-3.0) SNU, where the uncertainties are
statistical and systematic, respectively. This represents only about half of
the predicted Standard Solar Model rate of 129 SNU. All the experimental
procedures, including extraction of germanium from gallium, counting of 71Ge,
and data analysis are discussed in detail.Comment: 34 pages including 14 figures, Revtex, slightly shortene
Cerebellar c9RAN proteins associate with clinical and neuropathological characteristics of C9ORF72 repeat expansion carriers.
Clinical and neuropathological characteristics associated with G4C2 repeat expansions in chromosome 9 open reading frame 72 (C9ORF72), the most common genetic cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia, are highly variable. To gain insight on the molecular basis for the heterogeneity among C9ORF72 mutation carriers, we evaluated associations between features of disease and levels of two abundantly expressed "c9RAN proteins" produced by repeat-associated non-ATG (RAN) translation of the expanded repeat. For these studies, we took a departure from traditional immunohistochemical approaches and instead employed immunoassays to quantitatively measure poly(GP) and poly(GA) levels in cerebellum, frontal cortex, motor cortex, and/or hippocampus from 55 C9ORF72 mutation carriers [12 patients with ALS, 24 with frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and 19 with FTLD with motor neuron disease (FTLD-MND)]. We additionally investigated associations between levels of poly(GP) or poly(GA) and cognitive impairment in 15 C9ORF72 ALS patients for whom neuropsychological data were available. Among the neuroanatomical regions investigated, poly(GP) levels were highest in the cerebellum. In this same region, associations between poly(GP) and both neuropathological and clinical features were detected. Specifically, cerebellar poly(GP) levels were significantly lower in patients with ALS compared to patients with FTLD or FTLD-MND. Furthermore, cerebellar poly(GP) associated with cognitive score in our cohort of 15 patients. In the cerebellum, poly(GA) levels similarly trended lower in the ALS subgroup compared to FTLD or FTLD-MND subgroups, but no association between cerebellar poly(GA) and cognitive score was detected. Both cerebellar poly(GP) and poly(GA) associated with C9ORF72 variant 3 mRNA expression, but not variant 1 expression, repeat size, disease onset, or survival after onset. Overall, these data indicate that cerebellar abnormalities, as evidenced by poly(GP) accumulation, associate with neuropathological and clinical phenotypes, in particular cognitive impairment, of C9ORF72 mutation carriers
Complete results for five years of GNO solar neutrino observations
We report the complete GNO solar neutrino results for the measuring periods
GNO III, GNO II, and GNO I. The result for GNO III (last 15 solar runs) is
[54.3 + 9.9 - 9.3 (stat.)+- 2.3 (syst.)] SNU (1 sigma) or [54.3 + 10.2 - 9.6
(incl. syst.)] SNU (1 sigma) with errors combined. The GNO experiment is now
terminated after altogether 58 solar exposure runs that were performed between
May 20, 1998 and April 9, 2003. The combined result for GNO (I+II+III) is [62.9
+ 5.5 - 5.3 (stat.) +- 2.5 (syst.)] SNU (1 sigma) or [62.9 + 6.0 - 5.9] SNU (1
sigma) with errors combined in quadrature. Overall, gallium based solar
observations at LNGS (first in GALLEX, later in GNO) lasted from May 14, 1991
through April 9, 2003. The joint result from 123 runs in GNO and GALLEX is
[69.3 +- 5.5 (incl. syst.)] SNU (1 sigma). The distribution of the individual
run results is consistent with the hypothesis of a neutrino flux that is
constant in time. Implications from the data in particle- and astrophysics are
reiterated.Comment: 22 pages incl. 9 Figures and 8 Tables. to appear in: Physics Letters

CENP-E forms a link between attachment of spindle microtubules to kinetochores and the mitotic checkpoint. Nat Cell Biol
Here we show that suppression of synthesis of the microtubule motor CENP-E (centromere-associated protein E), a component of the kinetochore corona fibres of mammalian centromeres, yields chromosomes that are chronically mono-orientated, with spindles that are flattened along the plane of the substrate. Despite apparently normal microtubule numbers and the continued presence at kinetochores of other microtubule motors, spindle poles fragment in the absence of CENP-E, which implicates this protein in delivery of components from kinetochores to poles. CENP-E represents a link between attachment of spindle microtubules and the mitotic checkpoint signalling cascade, as depletion of this motor leads to profound checkpoint activation, whereas immunoprecipitation reveals a nearly stoichiometric association of CENP-E with the checkpoint kinase BubR1 during mitosis. hromosome movements during mitosis are orchestrated primarily by the interaction of spindle microtubules with the kinetochore 1 , the site for attachment of spindle microtubules to the centromere. In addition to providing a physical link between chromosomes and spindle microtubules, the kinetochore has an active function in chromosomal segregation through microtubule motors located at or near i
