    e-Infrastructures for e-Science: A Global View

    In the last 10 years, a new way of doing science is spreading in the world thank to the development of virtual research communities across many geographic and administrative boundaries. A virtual research community is a widely dispersed group of researchers and associated scientific instruments working together in a common virtual environment. This new kind of scientific environment, usually addressed as a "collaboratory", is based on the availability of high-speed networks and broadband access, advanced virtual tools and Grid-middleware technologies which, altogether, are the elements of the e-Infrastructures. The European Commission has heavily invested in promoting this new way of collaboration among scientists funding several international projects with the aim of creating e-Infrastructures to enable the European Research Area and connect the European researchers with their colleagues based in Africa, Asia and Latin America. In this paper we describe the actual status of these e- Infrastructures and present a complete picture of the virtual research communities currently using them. Information on the scientific domains and on the applications supported are provided together with their geographic distribution

      La actividad de extensión universitaria realizada articula la docencia de cursos de grado (Ecología y Educación Ambiental, Profesorado en Biología) y temáticas de investigación sobre ecología aplicada, transfiriendo e intercambiando con la sociedad saberes locales y regionales. La investigación en “Ecología de bosques nativos del Chaco Arido”, conduce a una mayor comprensión y conocimiento del sistema que nos permite aportar información y solución a diferentes problemáticas planteadas por la sociedad. El objetivo propuesto fue mejorar la calidad y equidad en la educación para hacer frente a la desigualdad desde sectores rurales y del interior de la provincia. Esta práctica se desarrolló en Pizarras de Bajo de Véliz (Centro Educativo Escuela Granadero M.Rodríguez, CE-Esc.Nro.409), mediante convocatoria SPU (Res.97/03), posteriormente con proyectos de extensión (UNSL) y proyecto financiado por el Fondo para las Américas. Experiencias educativas desarrolladas: a).-Capacitación. Se propuso utilizar el bosque nativo como laboratorio didáctico. Cursos: Ecosistemas y Paisajes. Uso turístico-científico. I.-Aspectos Ecológicos y Florísticos. II.-Aspectos Paisajísticos y Faunísticos. Se tuvo un fuerte impacto regional, aprobaron 110 participantes, (guardaparques -Parque Bajo de Véliz y Reserva El Rincón-, guías de turismo, técnicos municipales y docentes de diferentes CE). Esta actividad permitió aportar experiencia y conocimientos universitarios brindando herramientas para revalorizar el entorno y poder mejorar la calidad educativa. b).-Transmisión de saberes a alumnos y pobladores para mejorar su calidad de vida, particularmente de ambientes rurales. Huerta orgánica. Propagación de especies nativas. Realizamos 8 talleres con alumnos (CE-Esc.Nro.409), adecuando las actividades a los distintos niveles. Estas fueron utilizadas por los docentes como Trabajo Práctico de contenidos curriculares. La construcción del invernadero y las actividades asociadas permitió trascender el ámbito académico, propiciando el interés de los alumnos para obtención de recursos familiares. c).-Salud y rescate de oficio: Carpintería. Se realizaron 10 talleres, participando 30 alumnos (CE-Esc.Nro.409); un 50% de las reuniones fueron acompañados por padres y Guardaparques. d).-Jornadas de Concientización Ambiental Urbana (2005-2006-2007) y Rural (2008–2009). Se concientizó a diferentes actores sociales sobre problemáticas ambientales y de salud con un enfoque urbano, rural y áreas protegidas. Impacto: si cada asistente lleva la información abordada a su casa ó los docentes a otros CE, se logra una amplificación significativa. En el marco de los proyectos de extensión ejecutados se concretó una transferencia de conocimientos y una interacción enriquecedora con la sociedad, quienes revalorizaron su entorno, permitiéndonos restituir a la sociedad los beneficios de la formación recibida en la universidad pública

    Full-Body MRI in Patients With an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator Primary Results of a Randomized Study

    AbstractBackgroundMagnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of patients with conventional implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) is contraindicated.ObjectivesThis multicenter, randomized trial evaluated safety and efficacy of a novel ICD system specially designed for full-body MRI without restrictions on heart rate or pacing dependency. The primary safety objective was >90% freedom from MRI-related events composite endpoint within 30 days post-MRI. The primary efficacy endpoints were ventricular pacing capture threshold and ventricular sensing amplitude.MethodsSubjects received either a single- or dual-chamber ICD. In a 2:1 randomization, subjects either underwent MRI at 1.5-T of the chest, cervical, and head regions to maximize radiofrequency exposure up to 2 W/kg specific absorption rate and gradient field exposure to 200 T/m/s per axis (MRI group, n = 175), or they underwent a 1-h waiting period without MRI (control group, n = 88). A subset of MRI patients underwent ventricular fibrillation induction testing post-MRI to characterize defibrillation function.ResultsIn 42 centers, 275 patients were enrolled (76% male, age 60.4 ± 13.8 years). The safety endpoint was met with 100% freedom from the composite endpoint (p < 0.0001). Both efficacy endpoints were met with minimal differences in the proportion of MRI and control patients who demonstrated a ≤0.5 V increase in ventricular pacing capture threshold (100% MRI vs. 98.8% control, noninferiority p < 0.0001) or a ≤50% decrease in R-wave amplitude (99.3% MRI vs. 98.8% control, noninferiority p = 0.0001). A total of 34 ventricular tachyarrhythmia/ventricular fibrillation episodes (20 induced; 14 spontaneous) occurred in 24 subjects post-MRI, with no observed effect on sensing, detection, or treatment.ConclusionsThis is the first randomized clinical study of an ICD system designed for full-body MRI at 1.5-T. These data support that the system is safe and the MRI scan does not adversely affect electrical performance or efficacy.     Oleosin Cor a 15 is a novel allergen for Italian hazelnut allergic children

    BACKGROUND: Hazelnut allergy, which is characterized by symptoms that range from mild to severe, is one of the most common allergies in children throughout Europe, and an accurate diagnosis of this allergy is therefore essential. However, lipophilic allergens, such as oleosins, are generally underrepresented in diagnostic tests. We therefore sought to characterize the IgE reactivity of raw and roasted hazelnut oleosins, using the sera of hazelnut‐allergic pediatric patients. METHODS: Raw and roasted hazelnut oil body–associated proteins were analyzed by means of 1D and 2D electrophoresis and MS. Oleosin IgE reactivity was assessed by immunoblotting with the sera of 27 children who have confirmed hazelnut allergies and from 10 tolerant subjects. A molecular characterization of the oleosins was performed by interrogating the C. avellana cv. Jefferson and cv. TGL genomes, and through expression and purification of the recombinant new allergen. RESULTS: A proteomic and genomic investigation allowed two new oleosins to be identified, in addition to Cor a 12 and Cor a 13, in hazelnut oil bodies. One of the new oleosins was registered as a new allergen, according to the WHO/IUIS Allergen Nomenclature Subcommittee criteria, and termed Cor a 15. Cor a 15 was the most frequently immunorecognized oleosin in our cohort. Oleosins resulted to be the only immunorecognized allergens in a subgroup of allergic patients who showed low ImmunoCAP assay IgE values and positive OFC and PbP. Hazelnut roasting resulted in an increase in oleosin immunoreactivity. CONCLUSION: A novel hazelnut oleosin, named Cor a 15, has been discovered. Cor a 15 could play a role in eliciting an allergic reaction in a subgroup of pediatric patients that exclusively immunorecognize oleosins. The high prevalence of hazelnut oleosin sensitization here reported further confirms the need to include oleosins in routine diagnostic procedures

    Epigenetic mechanisms in virus-induced tumorigenesis

    About 15–20% of human cancers worldwide have viral etiology. Emerging data clearly indicate that several human DNA and RNA viruses, such as human papillomavirus, Epstein–Barr virus, Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, and human T-cell lymphotropic virus, contribute to cancer development. Human tumor-associated viruses have evolved multiple molecular mechanisms to disrupt specific cellular pathways to facilitate aberrant replication. Although oncogenic viruses belong to different families, their strategies in human cancer development show many similarities and involve viral-encoded oncoproteins targeting the key cellular proteins that regulate cell growth. Recent studies show that virus and host interactions also occur at the epigenetic level. In this review, we summarize the published information related to the interactions between viral proteins and epigenetic machinery which lead to alterations in the epigenetic landscape of the cell contributing to carcinogenesis

    Diagnostic investigation of 100 cases of abortion in sheep in Uruguay: 2015-2021

    The aim of this work was to identify causes of abortion through laboratory investigations in sheep flocks in Uruguay. One hundred cases of abortion, comprising 58 fetuses, 36 fetuses with their placentas, and 6 placentas were investigated in 2015-2021. Cases were subjected to gross and microscopic pathologic examinations, and microbiological and serological testing for the identification of causes of abortion, including protozoal, bacterial, and viral pathogens. An etiologic diagnosis was determined in 46 (46%) cases, including 33 (33%) cases caused by infectious pathogens, as determined by the detection of a pathogen along with the identification of fetoplacental lesions attributable to the detected pathogen. Twenty-seven cases (27%) were caused by Toxoplasma gondii, 5 (5%) by Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus, and 1 (1%) by an unidentified species of Campylobacter. Fourteen cases (14%) had inflammatory and/or necrotizing fetoplacental lesions compatible with an infectious etiology. Although the cause for these lesions was not clearly identified, T. gondii was detected in 4 of these cases, opportunistic bacteria (Bacillus licheniformis, Streptococcus sp.) were isolated in 2 cases, and bovine viral diarrhea virus 1 subtype i (BVDV-1i) was detected in another. Campylobacter jejuni was identified in 1 (1%) severely autolyzed, mummified fetus. BVDV-2b was identified incidentally in one fetus with an etiologic diagnosis of toxoplasmosis. Microscopic agglutination test revealed antibodies against ≥1 Leptospira serovars in 15/63 (23.8%) fetuses; however, Leptospira was not identified by a combination of qPCR, culture, fluorescent antibody testing nor immunohistochemistry. Neospora caninum, Chlamydia abortus, Chlamydia pecorum, Coxiella burnetii and border disease virus were not detected in any of the analyzed cases. Death was attributed to dystocia in 13 (13%) fetuses delivered by 8 sheep, mostly from one highly prolific flock. Congenital malformations including inferior prognathism, a focal hepatic cyst, and enterohepatic agenesis were identified in one fetus each, the latter being the only one considered incompatible with postnatal life. Toxoplasmosis, campylobacteriosis and dystocia were the main identified causes of fetal losses. Despite the relatively low overall success rate in establishing an etiologic diagnosis, a systematic laboratory workup in cases of abortion is of value to identify their causes and enables zoonotic pathogens surveillance.INIA: PL_27 N-23398ANII: FCE_3_2018_1_148540ANII: FSA_1_2018_1_15268

    l37Cs and 40K activity in natural grassland was studied at two sampling locations in the North-East of Italy, during 1997 and 1999. The present spatial patterns of 137Cs and 40K, their mobility and availability for uptake and transfer to grass. To know the spatial and temporal variation of these factors is essential for prediction the radioelement transfer; GIS tools (ILWIS) were applied. The spatial pattern of distribution evidence element redistribution in soil as consequence of the following parts : 1.- 40K migration allows 137Cs adsorption by clay soil components, although clays have low retention capacity. 2.- Lateral migration is predominant over vertical migration for both radioelements as consequence of: clay content of low retention capacity, higher porosity and strong acidic pH in site 1 ; low O.M. content, clay content of low retention capacity and moderate acidic pH in site 2. Multitemporal analysis evidences high increment of 137Cs soil inventory which varies between one and six times. The spatial and temporal variation in 137Cs soil inventory might be attributed to radioelement redistribution in soil, as shown by the spatial and temporal pattern.
