Tsunami Vulnerability Evaluation for a Small Ancient Village on Eastern Sicily Coast
The Ionian sea is prone to tsunamis due to its proximity to the Calabrian subduction zone, which is one of the major tsunamigenic areas of the Mediterranean. The tsunami disaster risk is, nowadays, significantly higher due to the increased exposure of buildings as a result of the economic and touristic growth of the Mediterranean coastal areas. This study focuses on Marzamemi, a small village in the western coast of Sicily, since its morphology and human presence amplify the need to assess its buildingsâ vulnerability. The main objective of this research is to quantify the building vulnerability to tsunami hazards using a physical and realistic tsunami scenario. For this purpose, the relative vulnerability index of the buildings in Marzamemi was calculated by means of an improved Papathoma Tsunami Vulnerability Assessment (PTVA) model. The presented approach has three main improvements: (a) a probabilistic tsunami scenario was used; (b) a realistic signal of water surface linked with a specific focal mechanism was adopted; (c) a tsunami wave was propagated from offshore to nearshore using a nonlinear numerical model. The good results of the proposed methodology make it very useful for coastal risk planning conducted by decision makers and stakeholders
Estimation of actual evapotranspiration of Mediterranean perennial crops by means of remote-sensing based surface energy balance models
Actual evapotranspiration from typical Mediterranean crops has been assessed in a Sicilian study area by using surface energy balance (SEB) and soil-water balance models. Both modelling approaches use remotely sensed data to estimate evapotranspiration fluxes in a spatially distributed way. The first approach exploits visible (VIS), near-infrared (NIR) and thermal (TIR) observations to solve the surface energy balance equation whereas the soil-water balance model uses only VIS-NIR data to detect the spatial variability of crop parameters. Considering that the study area is characterized by typical spatially sparse Mediterranean vegetation, i.e. olive, citrus and vineyards, alternating bare soil and canopy, we focused the attention on the main conceptual differences between one-source and two-sources energy balance models. Two different models have been tested: the widely used one-source SEBAL model, where soil and vegetation are considered as the sole source (mostly appropriate in the case of uniform vegetation coverage) and the two-sources TSEB model, where soil and vegetation components of the surface energy balance are treated separately. Actual evapotranspiration estimates by means of the two surface energy balance models have been compared vs. the outputs of the agro-hydrological SWAP model, which was applied in a spatially distributed way to simulate one-dimensional water flow in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. Remote sensing data in the VIS and NIR spectral ranges have been used to infer spatially distributed vegetation parameters needed to set up the upper boundary condition of SWAP. Actual evapotranspiration values obtained from the application of the soil water balance model SWAP have been considered as the reference to be used for energy balance models accuracy assessment. <br><br> Airborne hyperspectral data acquired during a NERC (Natural Environment Research Council, UK) campaign in 2005 have been used. The results of this investigation seem to prove a slightly better agreement between SWAP and TSEB for some fields of the study area. Further investigations are programmed in order to confirm these indications

Solutions of elliptic equations with a level surface parallel to the boundary: stability of the radial configuration
Positive solutions of homogeneous Dirichlet boundary value problems or initial-value problems for certain elliptic or parabolic equations must be radially symmetric and monotone in the radial direction if just one of their level surfaces is parallel to the boundary of the domain. Here, for the elliptic case, we prove the stability counterpart of that result. In fact, we show that if the solution is almost constant on a surface at a fixed distance from the boundary, then the domain is almost radially symmetric, in the sense that is contained in and contains two concentric balls Bre and Bri, with the difference re 12ri (linearly) controlled by a suitable norm of the deviation of the solution from a constant. The proof relies on and enhances arguments developed in a paper by Aftalion, Busca and Reichel
Hydrothermal fluid venting in the offshore sector of Campi Flegrei caldera: A geochemical, geophysical, and volcanological study
The ongoing unrest at the Campi Flegrei caldera (CFc) in southern Italy is prompting exploration
of its poorly studied offshore sector. We report on a multidisciplinary investigation of the Secca delle
Fumose (SdF), a submarine relief known since antiquity as the largest degassing structure of the offshore
sector of CFc. We combined high-resolution morphobathymetric and seismostratigraphic data with onshore
geological information to propose that the present-day SdF morphology and structure developed during
the initial stages of the last CFc eruption at Monte Nuovo in AD 1538. We suggest that the SdF relief stands
on the eastern uplifted border of a N-S-trending graben-like structure formed during the shallow emplacement
of the Monte Nuovo feeding dike. We also infer that the high-angle bordering faults that generated
the SdF relief now preferentially allow the ascent of hot brines (with an equilibrium temperature of 1798C),
thereby sustaining hydrothermal degassing on the seafloor. Systematic vertical seawater profiling shows
that hydrothermal seafloor venting generates a sizeable CO2, pH, and temperature anomaly in the overlying
seawater column. Data for the seawater vertical profile can be used to estimate the CO2 and energy (heat)
outputs from the SdF area at 50 tons/d (0.53 kg/s) and 80 MW, respectively. In view of the cause-effect
relationship with the Monte Nuovo eruption, and the substantial gas and energy outputs, we consider that
the SdF hydrothermal system needs to be included in monitoring programs of the ongoing CFc unrest
Barriers for the reduction of transport due to the EXB drift in magnetized plasmas
We consider a 1 1/2degrees of freedom Hamiltonian dynamical system, which
models the chaotic dynamics of charged test-particles in a turbulent electric
field, across the confining magnetic field in controlled thermonuclear fusion
devices. The external electric field E = \nabla\bigvee is modeled by a
phenomenological potential V and the magnetic field B is considered uniform. It
is shown that, by introducing a small additive control term to the external
electric field, it is possible to create a transport barrier for this dynamical
system. The robustness of this control method is also investigated. This
theoretical study indicates that alternative transport barriers can be
triggered without requiring a control action on the device scale as in present

caratterizzazione agroâclimatica del sito di sperimentazione mediante acquisizione diretta delle informazioni agroâmeteorologiche fornite dalla stazione n. 302 della rete S.I.A.S. (Servizio Informativo Agrometeorologico Siciliano);
analisi e caratterizzazione delle proprietaÌ idrauliche dei suoli ricadenti allâinterno dellâazienda sperimentale;
analisi e parametrizzazione di una serie di parametri biofisici delle colture investigate, necessari per lâapplicazione della modellistica agroâidrologica (distribuzione dellâapparato radicale, andamento temporale dellâindice di area fogliare e dei coefficienti colturali Kc, etc.);
monitoraggio dei volumi irrigui somministrati durante i due anni di sperimentazione;
nel capitolo 2, dal titolo âModellizzazione degli scambi idrici nel sistema continuo SuoloâPiantaâbassa Atmosfera (SPA): i modelli agroidrologici SWAP e FAO 56â vengono descritte le impostazioni concettuali della piuÌ recente modellistica agroidrologica e, in particolare, quella dei modelli SWAP e FAO 56, utilizzati per lo svolgimento della ricerca;
nel capitolo 3 dal titolo âDescrizione dellâarea di studio e delle attivitaÌ sperimentaliâ viene descritta lâarea test di studio e la caratterizzazione in essa compiuta e riguardante la parametrizzazione dei parametri fisici e biofisici sia dei suoli che delle colture;
nel capitolo 4 dal titolo âApplicazione, a scala aziendale, delle procedure di calcolo dei modelli FAO 56 e SWAP: validazione confronto e possibilitaÌ applicativeâ vengono riassunti i risultati dellâapplicazione dei due modelli agroidrologici utilizzati e, in particolare, vengono proposte delle modifiche migliorative alla procedura FAO 56 utilizzata nel modello IRRISIAS;
nel capitolo 5 dal titolo âApplicazione di tecniche di Remote Sensing: stima di parametri biofisici della vegetazione e dellâevapotraspirazione effettivaâ vengono descritte ed applicate alcune tecniche di remote sensing, operanti nelle regioni spettrali del visibile e del vicino infrarosso (VIS/NIR) e dellâinfrarosso termico (TIR), in grado di stimare importanti proprietaÌ biofisiche della vegetazione necessarie per lâapplicazione distribuita della modellistica agroidrologica, noncheÌ i flussi di evapotraspirazione effettiva mediante modelli di bilancio energetico superficiale;
Preliminary analysis of alternative divertors for DEMO
A physics and engineering analysis of alternative divertor configurations is carried out by examining benefits and problems by comparing the baseline single null solution with a Snowflake, an X- and a Super-X divertor. It is observed that alternative configurations can provide margin and resilience against large power fluctuations, but their engineering has intrinsic difficulties, especially in the balance between structural solidity and accessibility of the components and when the specific poloidal field coil positioning poses further constraints. A hybrid between the X- and Super-X divertor is proposed as a possible solution to the integration challenge

S-system theory applied to array-based GNSS ionospheric sensing
The GPS carrier-phase and code data have proven to be valuable sources of measuring the Earthâs ionospheric total electron content (TEC). With the development of new GNSSs with multi frequency data, many more ionosphere-sensing combinations of different precision can be formed as input of ionospheric modelling. We present the general way of interpreting such combinations through an application of S-system theory and address how their precision propagates into that of the unbiased TEC solution. Presenting the data relevant to TEC determination, we propose the usage of an array of GNSS antennas to improve the TEC precision and to expedite the rather long observational time-span required for high-precision TEC determination
