Legitimization and delegitimization of social hierarchy

    Get PDF
Although status and wealth are related facets of social stratification, their association is only moderate. In this article, we demonstrate that justification of wealth versus status can be independent processes. To this end, we introduce a novel, nondeclarative measure of system justification. The measure is based on within-individual correlations between the judgments of how a group ‘‘is doing’’ and how it ‘‘should be doing.’’ Two studies demonstrated that the between-group differentiation in terms of material wealth was delegitimized—the more a group was perceived as wealthy, the less it was desired to be wealthy. However, the between-group differentiation in terms of status was generally legitimized—the more a group was perceived as influential, the more it was desired to be influential. We conclude by discussing the role of sociopolitical context in active legitimization and delegitimization of different aspects of the system

Purpose: The aim of this paper is to present the theoretical aspects of the 5S method, its constituent elements, as well as the possibilities of its practical use in a production enterprise. In addition presenting problems and limitations in the implementation of the 5S method in the company.Methodology: The used research approach was the analysis of Lean Management literature and case study based on information from lean managers and implementation documents of the manufacturing company.Originality/value: The paper can provide value for people involved in Lean Management, emphasizing the theoretical aspects of the 5S method and its practical appliance. This paper can provide value for leaders who want to improve work organization and are not involved in Lean Management or for managers of smaller companies operating in the cable industry

Od Szymanowskiego do Mitoraja. 100 lat antyku sycylijskiego w polskiej literaturze i sztuce

Is liberal bias universal? An international perspective on social psychologists

    Get PDF
Based on our comparison of political orientation and research interests of social psychologists in capitalist Western countries versus post-Communist Eastern European countries, we suggest that Duarte and colleagues' claim of liberal bias in the field seems American-centric. We propose an alternative account of political biases which focuses on the academic tendency to explain attitudes of lower status groups

The expansion of some distributions into the Wiener series

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to investigate a discrete integral transform on the real line, which seems to be better adapted for some applications then the Hermite transform (see for example [6]). Another complete orthonormal system (CON) of functions on the real line, which was introduced by Wiener is more appropriate for nonlinear differential equations of mathematical physics

Collective narcissism and anti-semitism in Poland

    Get PDF
Two survey studies examined the relationship between collective narcissism - an identification with an in-group linked to an emotional investment in an unrealistic belief about its unparalleled greatness (Golec de Zavala et al., 2009) - and anti-Semitism in Poland. The results indicate that this relationship is simultaneously mediated by (a) a belief that the in-group is constantly threatened by hostile intentions of other groups (the Polish siege beliefs; Bar-Tal & Antebi, 1992a, b) and (b) a belief that the Jewish out-group is particularly threatening because its members secretly aim to dominate the world (the conspiracy stereotype of Jews; Bergmann, 2008; Kofta & Sędek, 2005). The results confirm the earlier findings that collective narcissism is linked to increased sensitivity to intergroup threat which drives its association with intergroup hostility. The results also support earlier suggestions that Polish anti-Semitism is grounded in threatened national pride

The paradox of in-group love: differentiating collective narcissism advances understanding of the relationship between in-group and out-group attitudes

The article looks at the relation between positive in-group regard (“in-group love”) and out-group negativity (“out-group hate”), a subject of ongoing controversy. Five studies performed in different cultural and national contexts, using different samples (including an adult representative sample) and different inter-group contexts examined the relationship between narcissistic versus genuine positive group regard and out-group negativity. Results reveal that collective narcissism (Golec de Zavala et al., 2009) and positive group regard have opposite effects on out-group hostility. Moreover, they function as mutual suppressors. Controlling for their shared variance strengthens the positive relationship between collective narcissism and out-group negativity and reveals the significant negative association between out-group hostility and genuine positive group regard operationalized as high collective self-esteem (Study 1), positive in-group identification (Studies 2, 3 and 5) or constructive patriotism (Study 4). These results corroborate earlier findings differentiating between constructive and destructive forms of in-group favoritism. They also parallel at the inter-group level findings indicating that mature and stable, personal self-esteem and individual narcissism differentially predict interpersonal aggressiveness

3D Garment Modelling - Creation of a Virtual Mannequin of the Human Body

This work presents the modelling and numerical simulation of mannequins as well as clothes in a 3D virtual environment. The paper explains garment modelling, with the objective of defining the development of a 3D body model that is useful and based on the demand of the garment industry. For this purpose a development strategy should be defined. Many scientists are working on the creative process for virtual garment development to create a garment directly on a 3D model of the human body, also called “ virtual tailoring”.The first strategic issue in this context that we present is that the model must necessarily incorporate the ease garment model associatively. These parameters define the priority concepts that are the draping and proper fit of the garment. The second point is that the transition between the 3D and 2D patterns, known as flattening 3D patterns, must be associative, precise and must take into account the real deformation of the fabric.Project entitled “Development of the research infrastructure of innovative techniques and technologies of the textile garment industry” CLO-2IN-TEX, financed by Operational Program Innovative Economy, 2007-2013, Action 2.
