A low H I column density filament in NGC 2403 : signature of interaction or accretion
Date of acceptance: 12/07/2014Observed H i accretion around nearby galaxies can only account for a fraction of the gas supply needed to sustain the currently observed star formation rates. It is possible that additional accretion occurs in the form of low column density cold flows, as predicted by numerical simulations of galaxy formation. To constrain the presence and properties of such flows, we present deep H i observations obtained with the NRAO Green Bank Telescope of an area measuring 4° × 4° around NGC 2403. These observations, with a 5σ detection limit of 2.4 × 1018 cm-2 over a 20 km s-1 linewidth, reveal a low column density, extended cloud outside the main H i disk, about 17′ (~ 16 kpc or ~ 2 R25) to the NW of the center of the galaxy. The total H i mass of the cloud is 6.3 × 106 M⊙, or 0.15 percent of the total H i mass of NGC 2403. The cloud is associated with an 8 kpc anomalous-velocity H i filament in the inner disk, that was previously observed in deep VLA observations. We discuss several scenarios for the origin of the cloud, and conclude that it is either accreting from the intergalactic medium, or is the result of a minor interaction with a neigboring dwarf galaxyPeer reviewe
The Circumgalactic Medium in Massive Halos
This chapter presents a review of the current state of knowledge on the cool
(T ~ 1e4 K) halo gas content around massive galaxies at z ~ 0.2-2. Over the
last decade, significant progress has been made in characterizing the cool
circumgalactic gas in massive halos of Mh ~ 1e12-1e14 Msun at intermediate
redshifts using absorption spectroscopy. Systematic studies of halo gas around
massive galaxies beyond the nearby universe are made possible by large
spectroscopic samples of galaxies and quasars in public archives. In addition
to accurate and precise constraints for the incidence of cool gas in massive
halos, detailed characterizations of gas kinematics and chemical compositions
around massive quiescent galaxies at z ~ 0.5 have also been obtained. Combining
all available measurements shows that infalling clouds from external sources
are likely the primary source of cool gas detected at d >~ 100 kpc from massive
quiescent galaxies. The origin of the gas closer in is currently less certain,
but SNe Ia driven winds appear to contribute significantly to cool gas found at
d < 100 kpc. In contrast, cool gas observed at d <~ 200 kpc from luminous
quasars appears to be intimately connected to quasar activities on parsec
scales. The observed strong correlation between cool gas covering fraction in
quasar host halos and quasar bolometric luminosity remains a puzzle. Combining
absorption-line studies with spatially-resolved emission measurements of both

Anaerobic digestion of screenings for biogas recovery
Screenings comprise untreatable solid materials that have found their way into the sewer. They are removed during preliminary treatment at the inlet work of any wastewater treatment process using a unit operation termed as a screen and at present are disposed of to landfill. These materials, if not removed, will damage mechanical equipment due to its heterogeneity and reduce overall treatment process, reliability and effectiveness. That is why this material is retained and prevented from entering the treatment system before finally being disposed of. The amount of biodegradable organic matter in screenings often exceeds the upper limit and emits a significant amount of greenhouse gases during biodegradation on landfill. Nutrient release can cause a serious problem of eutrophication phenomena in receiving waters and a deterioration of water quality. Disposal of screenings on landfill also can cause odour problem due to putrescible nature of some of the solid material. In view of the high organic content of screenings, anaerobic digestion method may not only offer the potential for energy recovery but also nutrient. In this study, the anaerobic digestion was performed for 30,days, at controlled pH and temperature, using different dry solids concentrations of screenings to study the potential of biogas recovery in the form of methane. It was found screenings have physical characteristics of 30% total solids and 93% volatile solids, suggesting screenings are a type of waste with high dry solids and organic contents. Consistent pH around pH 6.22 indicates anaerobic digestion of screenings needs minimum pH correction. The biomethane potential tests demonstrated screenings were amenable to anaerobic digestion with methane yield of 355,m3/kg VS, which is comparable to the previous results. This study shows that anaerobic digestion is not only beneficial for waste treatment but also to turn waste into useful resources
Reproductive health for refugees by refugees in Guinea III: maternal health
BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality can be particularly high in conflict and chronic emergency settings, partly due to inaccessible maternal care. This paper examines associations of refugee-led health education, formal education, age, and parity on maternal knowledge, attitudes, and practices among reproductive-age women in refugee camps in Guinea. METHODS: Data comes from a 1999 cross-sectional survey of 444 female refugees in 23 camps. Associations of reported maternal health outcomes with exposure to health education (exposed versus unexposed), formal education (none versus some), age (adolescent versus adult), or parity (nulliparous, parous, grand multiparous), were analysed using logistic regression. RESULTS: No significant differences were found in maternal knowledge or attitudes. Virtually all respondents said pregnant women should attend antenatal care and knew the importance of tetanus vaccination. Most recognised abdominal pain (75%) and headaches (24%) as maternal danger signs and recommended facility attendance for danger signs. Most had last delivered at a facility (67%), mainly for safety reasons (99%). Higher odds of facility delivery were found for those exposed to RHG health education (adjusted odds ratio 2.03, 95%CI 1.23-3.01), formally educated (adjusted OR 1.93, 95%CI 1.05-3.92), or grand multipara (adjusted OR 2.13, 95%CI 1.21-3.75). Main reasons for delivering at home were distance to a facility (94%) and privacy (55%). CONCLUSIONS: Refugee-led maternal health education appeared to increase facility delivery for these refugee women. Improved knowledge of danger signs and the importance of skilled birth attendance, while vital, may be less important in chronic emergency settings than improving facility access where quality of care is acceptable
Psychiatric assessment of suicide attempters in Japan: a pilot study at a critical emergency unit in an urban area
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The incidence of suicide has increased markedly in Japan since 1998. As psychological autopsy is not generally accepted in Japan, surveys of suicide attempts, an established risk factor of suicide, are highly regarded. We have carried out this study to gain insight into the psychiatric aspects of those attempting suicide in Japan.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Three hundred and twenty consecutive cases of attempted suicide who were admitted to an urban emergency department were interviewed, with the focus on psychosocial background and DSM-IV diagnosis. Moreover, they were divided into two groups according to the method of attempted suicide in terms of lethality, and the two groups were compared.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Ninety-five percent of patients received a psychiatric diagnosis: 81% of subjects met the criteria for an axis I disorder. The most frequent diagnosis was mood disorder. The mean age was higher and living alone more common in the high-lethality group. Middle-aged men tended to have a higher prevalence of mood disorders.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This is the first large-scale study of cases of attempted suicide since the dramatic increase in suicides began in Japan. The identification and introduction of treatments for psychiatric disorders at emergency departments has been indicated to be important in suicide prevention.</p

This review examines the potential technical and energy balance hurdles in the production of seaweed biofuel, and particular for the MacroBioCrude processing pipeline for the sustainable manufacture of liquid hydrocarbon fuels from seaweed in the UK.
The production of biofuel from seaweed is economically, energetically and technically challenging at scale. Any successful process appears to require both a method of preserving the seaweed for continuous feedstock availability and a method exploiting the entire biomass. The Connection between a Lyman Limit System, a very strong OVI Absorber, and Galaxies at z~0.203
With a column density log N(OVI) = 14.95+/-0.05, the OVI absorber at
z_abs~0.2028 observed toward the QSO PKS0312-77 (z_em=0.223) is the strongest
yet detected at z<0.5. At nearly identical redshift (z_abs=0.2026), we also
identify a Lyman limit system (LLS, log N(HI)=18.22). Combining FUV and NUV
spectra of PKS0312-77 with optical observations of galaxies in the surrounding
field (15'x32'), we present an analysis of these absorbers and their connection
to galaxies. The observed OI/HI ratio and photoionization modelling of other
low ions indicate the metallicity of the LLS is [Z/H]_LLS=-0.6 and that the LLS
is nearly 100% photoionized. In contrast, the OVI-bearing gas is collisionally
ionized at T~(3-10)x10^5 K as derived from the high-ion ratios and profile
broadenings. Our galaxy survey reveals 13 (0.3<L/L*<1.6) galaxies at \rho<2
h^{-1}_{70} Mpc and |\delta v|<1100 km/s from the LLS. A probable origin for
the LLS is debris from a galaxy merger, which led to a 0.7L* galaxy
([Z/H]_gal=+0.15) at\rho~38 h^{-1}_{70} kpc. Outflow from this galaxy may also
be responsible for the supersolar ([Z/H]_abs=+0.15), fully ionized absorber at
z_abs=0.2018 (-190 km/s from the LLS). The hot OVI absorber likely probes
coronal gas about the 0.7 L* galaxy and/or (~0.1 keV) intragroup gas of a
spiral-rich system. The association of other strong OVI absorbers with LLS
suggests they trace galactic and not intergalactic structures.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Ap
Critical point in ferroelectric Langmuir-Blodgett polymer films
The ferroelectric critical point has been found in a ferroelectric polymer by exploring the influence of the electric field on the paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition. Dielectric and pyroelectric measurements on 30-monolayer-thick films of the crystalline copolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) grown by Langmuir-Blodgett deposition show a single hysteresis loop below the zero-field phase transition temperature Tc0=80±10 °C, double hysteresis loops between Tc0 , and the critical temperature Tcr=145±5 °C, and no hysteresis above Tcr where the critical electric field is Ecr=0.93±0.1X109 V/m
Genotoxic effect induced by hydrogen peroxide in human hepatoma cells using comet assay
Background: Hydrogen peroxide is a common reactive oxygen intermediate generated by variousforms of oxidative stress. Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the DNA damage capacity ofH2O2 in HepG2 cells. Methods: Cells were treated with H2O2 at concentrations of 25 μM or 50 μM for5 min, 30 min, 40 min, 1 h or 24 h in parallel. The extent of DNA damage was assessed by the cometassay. Results: Compared to the control, DNA damage by 25 μM and 50 μM H2O2 increasedsignificantly with increasing incubation time up to 1 h, but it was not increased at 24 h. Conclusions:Our Findings confirm that H2O2 is a typical DNA damage inducing agent and thus is a good modelsystem to study the effects of oxidative stress. DNA damage in HepG2 cells increased significantlywith H2O2 concentration and time of incubation but later decreased likely due to DNA repairmechanisms and antioxidant enzyme
