    Isolation from forest reduces pollination, seed predation and insect scavenging in Swiss farmland

    Habitat loss and fragmentation lead to changes in species richness and composition which may affect ecosystem services. Yet, few studies distinguish between the effects of habitat loss and isolation, or how multiple ecosystem services may be affected simultaneously. We investigated the effects of variation in cover of woody and open semi-natural habitats and isolation from forest on the relative functioning of pollination, seed predation and insect scavenging in agricultural landscapes. We established 30 sites in grassland locations in the Swiss plateau around Berne. The sites varied independently in their isolation from forest edges, in the percentage of woody habitats and in the percentage of open semi-natural habitats in the surrounding landscape (500m radius). We experimentally exposed primroses, sunflower seeds and cricket corpses during spring 2008. None of the three studied services was affected by variation in woody or open semi-natural habitat cover. However, the proportion of flowers setting seed was significantly reduced by isolation from forest. Further, seed predation and insect scavenging were significantly lower at isolated sites than at sites connected to woody habitat. This pattern was particularly pronounced for seeds and insect corpses that were enclosed by wire netting and thus inaccessible to vertebrates. Thus, all three studied services responded quite similarly to the landscape context.     Impact of Adjunct Femoral Patch Reconstruction on Graft Patency after Below the Knee Popliteal Bypass Implantation

    Introduction: Acknowledging the superior long term patency of infrainguinal saphenous bypass to distal popliteal artery, debate continues regarding the choice of alternative conduits and possible surgical adjuncts to improve inflow and graft salvage. The objective of this retrospective study was to determine the effectiveness of proximal anastomotic patch as adjunct to open surgical below the knee popliteal revascularization.Material and Methods: In a series of 132 distal popliteal bypass operations 63 non-reversed vein, 18 in situ vein and 51 Omniflow bypass conduits were used. Proximal anastomotic patch was applied in overall 28 patients: 19% in the non-reversed (12 patients), 50% in the in situ group (9 patients) and 13.7% in the Omniflow group (7 patients).Results: The reintervention rate was 7.9% in the non-reversed, 33.3% in the in situ and 31.4% in the Omniflow group. The most often complication was the proximal anastomotic stenosis (5.3%), followed by bleeding (3%), infection (1.5%) and distal anastomotic stenosis (1.5%). Patch reconstruction did not decrease incidence of reoperation (21.4% vs. 21.2% in the non-patch group), nor significantly influence bleeding, infection or thrombosis, however it reduced the overall rate of proximal anastomosis stenosis (0% vs. 6.7%, p=) and significantly improved patency rate at 3 years in the in situ group compared to the non-patch group (100% vs. 55.6%, p=0.02).</p

    Hyperalgesia by low doses of the local anesthetic lidocaine involves cannabinoid signaling: An fMRI study in mice

    Lidocaine is clinically widely used as a local anesthetic inhibiting propagation of action potentials in peripheral nerve fibers. Correspondingly, the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) response in mouse brain to peripheral noxious input is largely suppressed by local lidocaine administered at doses used in a clinical setting. We observed, however, that local administration of lidocaine at doses 100 × lower than that used clinically led to a significantly increased sensitivity of mice to noxious forepaw stimulation as revealed by fMRI. This hyperalgesic response could be confirmed by behavioral readouts using the von Frey filament test. The increased sensitivity was found to involve a type 1 cannabinoid (CB(1)) receptor-dependent pathway as global CB(1) knockout mice, as well as wild-type mice pretreated systemically with the CB(1) receptor blocker rimonabant, did not display any hyperalgesic effects after low-dose lidocaine. Additional experiments with nociceptor-specific CB(1) receptor knockout mice indicated an involvement of the CB(1) receptors located on the nociceptors. We conclude that low concentrations of lidocaine leads to a sensitization of the nociceptors through a CB(1) receptor-dependent process. This lidocaine-induced sensitization might contribute to postoperative hyperalgesia
