Karhunen-Loeve expansion revisited for vector-valued random fields: scaling, errors and optimal basis
International audienceDue to scaling effects, when dealing with vector-valued random fields, the classical Karhunen-Loève expansion, which is optimal with respect to the total mean square error, tends to favorize the components of the random field that have the highest signal energy. When these random fields are to be used in mechanical systems, this phenomenon can introduce undesired biases for the results. This paper presents therefore an adaptation of the Karhunen- Loève expansion that allows us to control these biases and to minimize them. This original decomposition is first analyzed from a theoretical point of view, and is then illustrated on a numerical example
The representation of the back in idiomatic expressions--do idioms value the body?
Objective: Whilst investigating the influence of patients' representations on the impact of teaching in the back school, we took an interest in 1) the place of the back in the French idioms referring to the body; and 2) the meaning these idioms convey about the back. Methods: The idioms including body part terms were sought on the basis of a compilation of French idioms; it has to be noted that such a compilation, however excellent it may be, can only offer a partial view of lay conversation. Occurrence of body parts and of their connotations were assessed. Idioms were classified as positive, negative or neutral, keeping in mind the difficulties of a strict classification in such a field. Drawings were then performed on the basis of the results of the descriptive analysis. Results: Globally, idiomatic expressions offer a rather negative picture of the body or at least suggest that the body is prominently used to express negative ideas and emotions. This is particularly striking for the idioms associated with the back. Conclusion: The analysis of idioms referring to the body allows us to 'see with our own eyes' another aspect of the representations of the body and the back, as they are conveyed in the French language. <![CDATA[Trois ans après avoir témoigné de son mal chronique, une fidèle s'exprime à nouveau devant sa communauté, une Église évangélique de type charismatique. Elle partage la nouvelle de sa guérison miraculeuse. L'analyse comparée de ces récits, ainsi qu'une description ethnographique des célébrations durant lesquelles ils sont émis, montre comment l'énonciation de la croyante est encadrée par le pasteur. Une approche pragmatique et énonciative permet de ressaisir simultanément cet encadrement au plan institutionnel et interactionnel. On verra alors comment cette parole publique contribue à redéfinir la perception que la communauté a de Dieu et d'elle-même. Chacune des situations de témoignage renvoie ainsi à deux façons présentes au sein de l'évangélisme charismatique de se rapporter au surnaturel qui ont un impact sur l'organisation des Églises locales.Three years after sharing publicly about her chronic illness, a believer addresses again her congregation, an Evangelical church with Charismatic leanings. She shares the news of her miraculous healing. A comparative analysis of those testimonies and on ethnographic descriptions of the worship services during which she spoke will show how the pastor frames the believer's enunciation. A pragmatic and enunciative approach recaptures simultaneously both interactional and institutional levels. It will appear that the public speech contributes to redefining the congregation's perception of God and of itself. Both testimony settings show two ways, within Charismatic Evangelism, to refer to the supernatural. Those ways have an impact on the organization of the local churches
Probabilistic simulation for the certification of railway vehicles
The present dynamic certification process that is based on experiments has been essentially built on the basis of experience. The introduction of simulation techniques into this process would be of great interest. However, an accurate simulation of complex, nonlinear systems is a difficult task, in particular when rare events (for example, unstable behaviour) are considered. After analysing the system and the currently utilized procedure, this paper proposes a method to achieve, in some particular cases, a simulation-based certification. It focuses on the need for precise and representative excitations (running conditions) and on their variable nature. A probabilistic approach is therefore proposed and illustrated using an example.
First, this paper presents a short description of the vehicle / track system and of the experimental procedure. The proposed simulation process is then described. The requirement to analyse a set of running conditions that is at least as large as the one tested experimentally is explained. In the third section, a sensitivity analysis to determine the most influential parameters of the system is reported. Finally, the proposed method is summarized and an application is presented

Archival Legacy Investigations of Circumstellar Environments: Overview and First Results
We are currently conducting a comprehensive and consistent re-processing of
archival HST-NICMOS coronagraphic surveys using advanced PSF subtraction
methods, entitled the Archival Legacy Investigations of Circumstellar
Environments program (ALICE, HST/AR 12652). This virtual campaign of about 400
targets has already produced numerous new detections of previously unidentified
point sources and circumstellar structures. We present five newly spatially
resolved debris disks revealed in scattered light by our analysis of the
archival data. These images provide new views of material around young
solar-type stars at ages corresponding to the period of terrestrial planet
formation in our solar system. We have also detected several new candidate
substellar companions, for which there are ongoing followup campaigns (HST/WFC3
and VLT/SINFONI in ADI mode). Since the methods developed as part of ALICE are
directly applicable to future missions (JWST, AFTA coronagraph) we emphasize
the importance of devising optimal PSF subtraction methods for upcoming
coronagraphic imaging missions. We describe efforts in defining direct imaging
high-level science products (HLSP) standards that can be applicable to other
coronagraphic campaigns, including ground-based (e.g., Gemini Planet Imager),
and future space instruments (e.g., JWST). ALICE will deliver a first release

Five Debris Disks Newly Revealed in Scattered Light from the HST NICMOS Archive
We have spatially resolved five debris disks (HD 30447, HD 35841, HD 141943,
HD 191089, and HD 202917) for the first time in near-infrared scattered light
by reanalyzing archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/NICMOS coronagraphic
images obtained between 1999 and 2006. One of these disks (HD 202917) was
previously resolved at visible wavelengths using HST/Advanced Camera for
Surveys. To obtain these new disk images, we performed advanced point-spread
function subtraction based on the Karhunen-Loeve Image Projection (KLIP)
algorithm on recently reprocessed NICMOS data with improved detector artifact
removal (Legacy Archive PSF Library And Circumstellar Environments Legacy
program). Three of the disks (HD 30447, HD 35841, and HD 141943) appear
edge-on, while the other two (HD 191089 and HD 202917) appear inclined. The
inclined disks have been sculpted into rings; in particular, the disk around HD
202917 exhibits strong asymmetries. All five host stars are young (8-40 Myr),
nearby (40-100 pc) F and G stars, and one (HD 141943) is a close analog to the
young sun during the epoch of terrestrial planet formation. Our discoveries
increase the number of debris disks resolved in scattered light from 19 to 23
(a 21% increase). Given their youth, proximity, and brightness (V = 7.2 to
8.5), these targets are excellent candidates for follow-up investigations of
planet formation at visible wavelengths using the HST/STIS coronagraph, at
near-infrared wavelengths with the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) and Very Large
Telescope (VLT)/SPHERE, and at thermal infrared wavelengths with the James Webb
Space Telescope NIRCam and MIRI coronagraphs.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, 1 tabl
The Actinomyosin Motor Drives Malaria Parasite Red Blood Cell Invasion but Not Egress.
Apicomplexa are obligate intracellular parasites that actively invade, replicate within, and egress from host cells. The parasite actinomyosin-based molecular motor complex (often referred to as the glideosome) is considered an important mediator of parasite motility and virulence. Mature intracellular parasites often become motile just prior to egress from their host cells, and in some genera, this motility is important for successful egress as well as for subsequent invasion of new host cells. To determine whether actinomyosin-based motility is important in the red blood cell egress and invasion activities of the malaria parasite, we have used a conditional genetic approach to delete GAP45, a primary component of the glideosome, in asexual blood stages of Plasmodium falciparum Our results confirm the essential nature of GAP45 for invasion but show that P. falciparum does not require a functional motor complex to undergo egress from the red blood cell. Malarial egress therefore differs fundamentally from induced egress in the related apicomplexan Toxoplasma gondiiIMPORTANCE Clinical malaria results from cycles of replication of single-celled parasites of the genus Plasmodium in red blood cells. Intracellular parasite replication is followed by a highly regulated, protease-dependent process called egress, in which rupture of the bounding membranes allows explosive release of daughter merozoites which rapidly invade fresh red cells. A parasite actinomyosin-based molecular motor (the glideosome) has been proposed to provide the mechanical force to drive invasion. Studies of the related parasite Toxoplasma gondii have shown that induced egress requires parasite motility, mediated by a functional glideosome. However, whether the glideosome has a similar essential role in egress of malaria merozoites from red blood cells is unknown. Here, we show that although a functional glideosome is required for red blood cell invasion by Plasmodium falciparum merozoites, it is not required for egress.
