Effect of yaw angle on flow structure and cross-flow force around a circular cylinder

    Get PDF
Flow around an inclined circular cylinder at yaw angles of α = 0°, 30°, 45°, and 60° has been numerically studied using the delayed detached eddy simulation at a Reynolds number of 1.4 × 104. Periodic boundary conditions are utilized to minimize the end effect. The focus is to explore the effect of yaw angle on the flow structure and the spatial distribution of the cross-flow forces. For the normal flow case, the modulation of the span-wise averaged lift force coefficient is found to be related to the unstable shear layer. For the inclined cases, contours of the sectional lift force coefficient show that the local vortex shedding staggers in time along the axial span at the early stage of the simulation, when the flow approaches the cylinder. After the flow reaches the quasi-periodic state, the axial difference disappears for α \u3e 45° but not for α = 30°. In particular, the axial difference of the sectional lift force coefficient results in a near-zero value of the span-wise averaged lift force coefficient. The transition from a two-dimensional flow to a three-dimensional one is not captured in the current simulation. However, wake visualization indicates a mitigation of von Kármán vortex shedding when the yaw angle is greater than 30°. Although the Strouhal number is well predicted by the Independence Principle (IP), other flow properties are less agreeable with the prediction by IP

Genome sequence and analysis of the tuber crop potato

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is the world’s most important non-grain food crop and is central to global food security. It is clonally propagated, highly heterozygous, autotetraploid, and suffers acute inbreeding depression. Here we use a homozygous doubled-monoploid potato clone to sequence and assemble 86% of the 844-megabase genome. We predict 39,031 protein-coding genes and present evidence for at least two genome duplication events indicative of a palaeopolyploid origin. As the first genome sequence of an asterid, the potato genome reveals 2,642 genes specific to this large angiosperm clade. We also sequenced a heterozygous diploid clone and show that gene presence/absence variants and other potentially deleterious mutations occur frequently and are a likely cause of inbreeding depression. Gene family expansion, tissue-specific expression and recruitment of genes to new pathways contributed to the evolution of tuber development. The potato genome sequence provides a platform for genetic improvement of this vital cro

    An exploding glass ?

We propose a connection between self-similar, focusing dynamics in nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) and macroscopic dynamic features of the glass transition. In particular, we explore the divergence of the appropriate relaxation times in the case of hard spheres as the limit of random close packing is approached. We illustrate the analogy in the critical case, and suggest a ``normal form'' that can capture the onset of dynamic self-similarity in both phenomena.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

Graphic Mining of High-Order Drug Interactions and Their Directional Effects on Myopathy Using Electronic Medical Records

    Get PDF
We propose to study a novel pharmacovigilance problem for mining directional effects of high-order drug interactions on an adverse drug event (ADE). Our goal is to estimate each individual risk of adding a new drug to an existing drug combination. In this proof-of-concept study, we analyzed a large electronic medical records database and extracted myopathy-relevant case control drug co-occurrence data. We applied frequent itemset mining to discover frequent drug combinations within the extracted data, evaluated directional drug interactions related to these combinations, and identified directional drug interactions with large effect sizes. Furthermore, we developed a novel visualization method to organize multiple directional drug interaction effects depicted as a tree, to generate an intuitive graphical and visual representation of our data-mining results. This translational bioinformatics approach yields promising results, adds valuable and complementary information to the existing pharmacovigilance literature, and has the potential to impact clinical practice

From nonwetting to prewetting: the asymptotic behavior of 4He drops on alkali substrates

    Get PDF
We investigate the spreading of 4He droplets on alkali surfaces at zero temperature, within the frame of Finite Range Density Functional theory. The equilibrium configurations of several 4He_N clusters and their asymptotic trend with increasing particle number N, which can be traced to the wetting behavior of the quantum fluid, are examined for nanoscopic droplets. We discuss the size effects, inferring that the asymptotic properties of large droplets correspond to those of the prewetting film

Graviton Resonances in E+ E- -> MU+ MU- at Linear Colliders with Beamstrahlung and ISR Effects

Electromagnetic radiation emitted by the colliding beams is expected to play an important role at the next generation of high energy e^+ e^- linear collider(s). Focusing on the simplest process e+e- -> mu+ mu-, we show that radiative effects like initial state radiation (ISR) and beamstrahlung can lead to greatly-enhanced signals for resonant graviton modes of the Randall-Sundrum model.Comment: 20 pages Latex, 7 eps figure

Analysis of the Y(4140) and related molecular states with QCD sum rules

    In this article, we assume that there exist scalar D∗Dˉ∗{D}^\ast {\bar {D}}^\ast, Ds∗Dˉs∗{D}_s^\ast {\bar {D}}_s^\ast, B∗Bˉ∗{B}^\ast {\bar {B}}^\ast and Bs∗Bˉs∗{B}_s^\ast {\bar {B}}_s^\ast molecular states, and study their masses using the QCD sum rules. The numerical results indicate that the masses are about (250−500)MeV(250-500) \rm{MeV} above the corresponding D∗−Dˉ∗{D}^\ast -{\bar {D}}^\ast, Ds∗−Dˉs∗{D}_s^\ast -{\bar {D}}_s^\ast, B∗−Bˉ∗{B}^\ast -{\bar {B}}^\ast and Bs∗−Bˉs∗{B}_s^\ast -{\bar {B}}_s^\ast thresholds, the Y(4140) is unlikely a scalar Ds∗Dˉs∗{D}_s^\ast {\bar {D}}_s^\ast molecular state. The scalar D∗Dˉ∗D^\ast {\bar D}^\ast, Ds∗Dˉs∗D_s^\ast {\bar D}_s^\ast, B∗Bˉ∗B^\ast {\bar B}^\ast and Bs∗Bˉs∗B_s^\ast {\bar B}_s^\ast molecular states maybe not exist, while the scalar D′∗D′ˉ∗{D'}^\ast {\bar {D'}}^\ast, D′s∗D′ˉs∗{D'}_s^\ast {\bar {D'}}_s^\ast, B′∗B′ˉ∗{B'}^\ast {\bar {B'}}^\ast and B′s∗B′ˉs∗{B'}_s^\ast {\bar {B'}}_s^\ast molecular states maybe exist.Comment: 19 pages, 36 figures, slight revisio

The open-charm radiative and pionic decays of molecular charmonium Y(4274)

In this work, we investigate the decay widths and the line shapes of the open-charm radiative and pionic decays of Y(4274) with the DsDˉs0(2317)D_s\bar{D}_{s0}(2317) molecular charmonium assignment. Our calculation indicates that the decay widths of Y(4274)→Ds+Ds∗−γY(4274)\to D^{+}_{s}D^{*-}_{s}\gamma and Y(4274)→Ds+Ds−π0Y(4274)\to D^+_{s}D^-_{s}\pi^0 can reach up to 0.05 keV and 0.75 keV, respectively. In addition, the result of the line shape of the photon spectrum of Y(4274)→Ds+Ds∗−γY(4274)\to D_s^+ {D}_s^{*-} \gamma shows that there exists a very sharp peak near the large end point of photon energy. The line shape of the pion spectrum of Y(4274)→Ds+Ds∗−π0Y(4274)\to D_s^+ {D}_s^{*-} \pi^0 is similar to that of the pion spectrum of Y(4274)→Ds+Ds∗−γY(4274)\to D_s^+ {D}_s^{*-} \gamma, where we also find a very sharp peak near the large end point of pion energy. According to our calculation, we suggest further experiments to carry out the search for the open-charm radiative and pionic decays of Y(4274).Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Published versio

Critical flux pinning and enhanced upper-critical-field in magnesium diboride films

We have conducted pulsed transport measurements on c-axis oriented magnesium diboride films over the entire relevant ranges of magnetic field 0 \alt H \alt H_{c2} (where \hcu is the upper critical field) and current density 0 \alt j \alt j_{d} (where jdj_{d} is the depairing current density). The intrinsic disorder of the films combined with the large coherence length and three-dimensionality, compared to cuprate superconductors, results in a six-fold enhancement of Hc2H_{c2} and raises the depinning current density jcj_{c} to within an order of magnitude of jdj_{d}. The current-voltage response is highly non-linear at all fields, resulting from a combination of depinning and pair-breaking, and has no trace of an Ohmic free-flux-flow regime.
