    New systems are required for optical limiting against broadband laser pulses. We demonstrate that the association of non-linear scattering from single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) and multiphoton absorption (MPA) from organic chromophores is a promising approach to extend performances of optical limiters over broad spectral and temporal ranges. Such composites display high linear transmission and good neutral colorimetry and are particularly efficient in the nanosecond regime due to cumulative effects.Comment: 5 avril 200

    A genome-wide association scan for rheumatoid arthritis data by Hotelling's T2 tests

    We performed a genome-wide association scan on the North American Rheumatoid Arthritis Consortium (NARAC) data using Hotelling's T2 tests, i.e., TH based on allele coding and TG based on genotype coding. The objective was to identify associations between single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) or markers and rheumatoid arthritis. In specific candidate gene regions, we evaluated the performance of Hotelling's T2 tests. Then Hotelling's T2 tests were used as a tool to identify new regions that contain SNPs showing strong associations with disease. As expected, the strongest association evidence was found in the region of the HLA-DRB1 locus on chromosome 6. In the region of the TRAF1-C5 genes, we identified two SNPs, rs2900180 and rs3761847, with the largest and the second largest TH and TG scores among all SNPs on chromosome 9. We also identified one SNP, rs2476601, in the region of the PTPN22 gene that had the largest TH score and the second largest TG score among all SNPs on chromosome 1. In addition, SNPs with the largest TH score on each chromosome were identified. These SNPs may be located in the regions of genes that have modest effects on rheumatoid arthritis. These regions deserve further investigation

    Sluggish growth in low-income countries, despite the high performance in other economic indicators, motivates the literature to switch attention to institutions. Despite its crucial economic implications, there is limited attention on rent-seeking as a driver of economic growth in low-income countries. This paper investigates the effect of rent-seeking on growth in low-income countries from 2004 to 2017using the system generalized method of moments estimator. The empirical results reveal that rent-seeking negatively affects growth, implying that it obstructs the pace of economic development in low-income countries.     Integrated GHz silicon photonic interconnect with micrometer-scale modulators and detectors

    We report an optical link on silicon using micrometer-scale ring-resonator enhanced silicon modulators and waveguide-integrated germanium photodetectors. We show 3 Gbps operation of the link with 0.5 V modulator voltage swing and 1.0 V detector bias. The total energy consumption for such a link is estimated to be ~120 fJ/bit. Such compact and low power monolithic link is an essential step towards large-scale on-chip optical interconnects for future microprocessors

    Astrophysical science metrics for next-generation gravitational-wave detectors

    The second generation of gravitational-wave detectors are being built and tuned all over the world. The detection of signals from binary black holes is beginning to fulfill the promise of gravitational-wave astronomy. In this work, we examine several possible configurations for third-generation laser interferometers in existing km-scale facilities. We propose a set of astrophysically motivated metrics to evaluate detector performance. We measure the impact of detector design choices against these metrics, providing a quantitative cost-benefit analyses of the resulting scientific payoffs

    Optical Limiting in Single-walled Carbon Nanotube Suspensions

    Optical limiting behaviour of suspensions of single-walled carbon nanotubes in water, ethanol and ethylene glycol is reported. Experiments with 532 nm, 15 nsec duration laser pulses show that optical limiting occurs mainly due to nonlinear scattering. The observed host liquid dependence of optical limiting in different suspensions suggests that the scattering originates from microbubbles formed due to absorption-induced heating.Comment: 10 pages, 5 eps figures, to appear in Chem.     Investigating fragmentation of gas structures in OB cluster-forming molecular clump G33.92+0.11 with 1000 AU resolution observations of ALMA

    We report new, \sim1000 AU spatial resolution observations of 225 GHz dust continuum emission towards the OB cluster-forming molecular clump G33.92+0.11. On parsec scales, this molecular clump presents a morphology with several arm-like dense gas structures surrounding the two central massive (\gtrsim100 MM_{\odot}) cores. From the new, higher resolution observations, we identified 28 localized, spatially compact dust continuum emission sources, which may be candidates of young stellar objects. Only one of them is not embedded within known arm-like (or elongated) dense gas structures. The spatial separations of these compact sources can be very well explained by Jeans lengths. We found that G33.92+0.11 may be consistently described by a marginally centrifugally supported, Toomre unstable accretion flow which is approximately in a face-on projection. The arm-like overdensities are natural consequence of the Toomre instability, which can fragment to form young stellar objects in shorter time scales than the timescale of the global clump contraction. On our resolved spatial scales, there is not yet evidence that the fragmentation is halted by turbulence, magnetic field, or stellar feedback.Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures.
