    SPOTS: The Search for Planets Orbiting Two Stars: II. First constraints on the frequency of sub-stellar companions on wide circumbinary orbits

    A large number of direct imaging surveys for exoplanets have been performed in recent years, yielding the first directly imaged planets and providing constraints on the prevalence and distribution of wide planetary systems. However, like most of the radial velocity ones, these surveys generally focus on single stars, hence binaries and higher-order multiples have not been studied to the same level of scrutiny. This motivated the SPOTS (Search for Planets Orbiting Two Stars) survey, which is an ongoing direct imaging study of a large sample of close binaries, started with VLT/NACO and now continuing with VLT/SPHERE. To complement this survey, we have identified the close binary targets in 24 published direct imaging surveys. Here we present our statistical analysis of this combined body of data. We analysed a sample of 117 tight binary systems, using a combined Monte Carlo and Bayesian approach to derive the expected values of the frequency of companions, for different values of the companion's semi-major axis. Our analysis suggest that the frequency of sub-stellar companions in wide orbit is moderately low (≲\lesssim 13% with a best value of 6% at 95% confidence level) and not significantly different between single stars and tight binaries. One implication of this result is that the very high frequency of circumbinary planets in wide orbits around post-common envelope binaries, implied by eclipse timing (up to 90% according to Zorotovic & Schreiber 2013), can not be uniquely due to planets formed before the common-envelope phase (first generation planets), supporting instead the second generation planet formation or a non-Keplerian origin of the timing variations.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figure

    Near-Infrared Detection and Characterization of the Exoplanet HD 95086 b with the Gemini Planet Imager

    HD 95086 is an intermediate-mass debris-disk-bearing star. VLT/NaCo 3.8μm3.8 \mu m observations revealed it hosts a 5±2MJup5\pm2 \mathrm{M}_{Jup} companion (HD 95086 b) at ≃56\simeq 56 AU. Follow-up observations at 1.66 and 2.18 μm\mu m yielded a null detection, suggesting extremely red colors for the planet and the need for deeper direct-imaging data. In this Letter, we report H- (1.7μm1.7 \mu m) and K1\mathrm{K}_1- (2.05μm2.05 \mu m) band detections of HD 95086 b from Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) commissioning observations taken by the GPI team. The planet position in both spectral channels is consistent with the NaCo measurements and we confirm it to be comoving. Our photometry yields colors of H-L'= 3.6±1.03.6\pm 1.0 mag and K1_1-L'=2.4±0.72.4\pm 0.7 mag, consistent with previously reported 5-σ\sigma upper limits in H and Ks. The photometry of HD 95086 b best matches that of 2M 1207 b and HR 8799 cde. Comparing its spectral energy distribution with the BT-SETTL and LESIA planet atmospheric models yields Teff∼_{\mathrm{eff}}\sim600-1500 K and log g∼\sim2.1-4.5. Hot-start evolutionary models yield M=5±25\pm2 MJup_{Jup}. Warm-start models reproduce the combined absolute fluxes of the object for M=4-14 MJup_{Jup} for a wide range of plausible initial conditions (Sinit_{init}=8-13 kB_{B}/baryon). The color-magnitude diagram location of HD 95086 b and its estimated Teff_{\mathrm{eff}} and log g suggest that the planet is a peculiar L-T transition object with an enhanced amount of photospheric dust.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, accepted on April, 15th, 201

    CortExTool: a toolbox for processing motor cortical excitability measurements by transcranial magnetic stimulation

    Assessing motor cortical excitability (CE) is essential in transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in order to ensure both safe and normalised stimulation power across subjects or patients. However, there is still a lack of automatic and easy-to-use tools for analysing the electromyographic (EMG) signal features that are relevant for CE assessment, such as the amplitude of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) or the duration of cortical silent periods (CSPs). Here, we describe CortExTool, a signal processing toolbox we developed to fulfil these needs. The toolbox, developed in the Matlab programming language, is open-source and freely accessible to the TMS community. CortExTool provides all the standard functionalities required to automatically process EMG signals recorded during a CE experiment, on both individual and group levels. Its use should allow to standardize and to facilitate the processing of CE measurements by TMS

    Mapping dynamical properties of cortical microcircuits using robotized TMS and EEG: Towards functional cytoarchitectonics

    International audienceBrain dynamics at rest depend on the large-scale interactions between oscillating cortical microcircuits arranged into macrocolumns. Cytoarchitectonic studies have shown that the structure of those microcircuits differs between cortical regions, but very little is known about interregional differences of their intrinsic dynamics at a macro-scale in human. We developed here a new method aiming at mapping the dynamical properties of cortical microcircuits non-invasively using the coupling between robotized transcranial magnetic stimulation and elec-troencephalography. We recorded the responses evoked by the stimulation of 18 cortical targets largely covering the accessible neocortex in 22 healthy volunteers. Specific data processing methods were developed to map the local source activity of each cortical target, which showed interregional differences with very good interhemi-spheric reproducibility. Functional signatures of cortical microcircuits were further studied using spatio-temporal decomposition of local source activities in order to highlight principal brain modes. The identified brain modes revealed that cortical areas with similar intrinsic dynamical properties could be distributed either locally or not, with a spatial signature that was somewhat reminiscent of resting state networks. Our results provide the proof of concept of " functional cytoarchitectonics " , that would guide the parcellation of the human cortex using not only its cytoarchitecture but also its intrinsic responses to local perturbations.     Impact of P2Y12 Inhibition by Clopidogrel on Cardiovascular Mortality in Unselected Patients Treated by Percutaneous Coronary Angioplasty A Prospective Registry

    ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to determine whether low platelet response to the P2Y12 receptor antagonist clopidogrel as assessed by Vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein flow cytometry test (VASP- FCT) predicts cardiovascular events in a high-risk population undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).BackgroundImpaired platelet responsiveness to clopidogrel is thought to be a determinant of cardiovascular events after PCI. The platelet VASP-FCT is a new assay specific to the P2Y12 adenosine diphosphate receptor-pathway. In this test, platelet activation is expressed as platelet reactivity index (PRI).MethodsFour-hundred sixty-one unselected patients undergoing urgent (n = 346) or planned (n = 115) PCI were prospectively enrolled. Patients were classified as low-response (LR) and response (R) to clopidogrel, depending on their PRI. Optimal PRI cutoff was determined by receiver-operator characteristic curve analysis to 61% (LR: PRI ≥61% and R: PRI <61%). Follow-up was obtained at a mean of 9 ± 2 months in 453 patients (98.3%).ResultsAt follow-up, total cardiac mortality rates and possible and total stent thrombosis were higher in LR patients. Multivariate analysis identified creatinine clearance (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.95; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.93 to 0.98, p < 0.001), drug-eluting stent (HR: 5.73; 95% CI: 1.40 to 23.43, p = 0.015), C-reactive protein (HR: 1.01; 95% CI: 1.001 to 1.019, p = 0.024), and LR to clopidogrel (HR: 4.00; 95% CI: 1.08 to 14.80, p = 0.037) as independent predictors of cardiac death. The deleterious impact of LR to clopidogrel on cardiovascular death was significantly higher in patients implanted with drug-eluting stent.ConclusionsIn patients undergoing PCI, LR to clopidogrel assessed by VASP-FCT is an independent predictor of cardiovascular death at the PRI cutoff value of ≥61%. The LR clinical impact seems to be dependent on the type of stent implanted

    Task-generic and task-specific connectivity modulations in the ADHD brain:an integrated analysis across multiple tasks

This paper offers an overarching biological perspective across these. We applied a novel strategy that extracts functional connectivity modulations in the brain across one (P(single)), two (P(mix)) or three (P(all)) cognitive tasks and compared the pattern of modulations between participants with ADHD (n-89), unaffected siblings (n = 93) and controls (n = 84; total N = 266; age range = 8-27 years). Participants with ADHD had significantly fewer P(all) connections (modulated regardless of task), but significantly more task-specific (P(single)) connectivity modulations than the other groups. The amplitude of these P(single) modulations was significantly higher in ADHD. Unaffected siblings showed a similar degree of P(all) connectivity modulation as controls but a similar degree of P(single) connectivity modulation as ADHD probands. P(all) connections were strongly reproducible at the individual level in controls, but showed marked heterogeneity in both participants with ADHD and unaffected siblings. The pattern of reduced task-generic and increased task-specific connectivity modulations in ADHD may be interpreted as reflecting a less efficient functional brain architecture due to a reduction in the ability to generalise processing pathways across multiple cognitive domains. The higher amplitude of unique task-specific connectivity modulations in ADHD may index a more "effortful" coping strategy. Unaffected siblings displayed a task connectivity profile in between that of controls and ADHD probands, supporting an endophenotype view. Our approach provides a new perspective on the core neural underpinnings of ADHD
