The chondrocranium of Rhinophrynus dorsalis is described and illustrated. Autapomorphies of R. dorsalis are the presence of the symplectic cartilage and a cartilaginous process on the ascending process of the palatoquadrate. Synapomorphies of Rhinophrynus shared with the Pipidae are: (1) early formation of the lower jaw and (2) presence of a suprarostral plate. Alternative developmental pathways for the formation of the suprarostral plate are considered. Histological data indicates that the suprarostral plate forms from: (1) the early fusion of the cornua trabeculae with the suprarostral cartilages, (2) an anterior growth of the ethmold plate, and (3) subsequent fusion of the cornua trabeculae and the anterior process of the ethmoid plate. Development of the Suprarostral Plate of Pipoid Frogs

The rostral region of nonpipoid tadpoles has two sets of cartilages, the cornua trabeculae and the suprarostral cartilages, whereas the rostral region in pipoid larvae is occupied by a single and continuous cartilage, the suprarostral plate. The homology of this region in pipoid and nonpipoids tadpoles has been controversial. We examined the early formation and development of the suprarostral plate using serially cross-sectioned specimens of Rhinophrynus, Xenopus, and Hymenochirus. We conclude that the cartilaginous structures present in the rostral area of pipoid and nonpipoid larvae are homologous. Furthermore, we found two different developmental patterns among pipoid larvae. The chondrocranium of Hymenochirus boettgeri is described and illustrated to understand its developmental pattern and because of its uniqueness among pipoid chondrocrania

Ethanol Production, Food and Forests

This paper investigates the direct and indirect impacts of ethanol production on land use, deforestation and food production. A partial equilibrium model of a national economy with two sectors and two regions, one of which includes a forest, is developed. It analyses how an exogenous increase in the ethanol price affects input allocation (land and labor) between sectors (energy crop and food). The total effect of ethanol prices on food production and deforestation is decomposed into three partial effects. First, the well-documented effect of direct land competition between rival uses arises; it increases deforestation and decreases food production. Second, an indirect displacement of food production across regions, possibly provoked by the reaction of international food prices, increases deforestation and reduces the food sector's output. Finally, labor mobility between sectors and regions tends to decrease food production but also deforestation. The total impact of ethanol production on food production is negative while there is an ambiguous impact on deforestatio

Sub-Saharan Africa in Early Modernity is discussed, particularly that part of the continent particularly that part of the continent that was connected by the Portuguese to the Atlantic system, which boosted the trade of captives and and its insertion in the nascent European capitalism. The region of Angola reported to the Viceroy of Brazil, that is, the governor of the of the captaincy of Bahia. We used the codex Eduardo Castro e Almeida for the period of King José I and his minister Pombal, 1750 to 1777.Discorre-se sobre a África subsaariana na Primeira Modernidade, de modo particular aquele pedaço do continente que foi conectado pelos portugueses ao sistema atlântico, o que impulsionou o comércio de cativos, e sua inserção ao nascente capitalismo europeu. A região de Angola se reportava ao vice-rei do Brasil, isto é, o governador da capitania da Bahia. Nesse ínterim o presente texto discute como se deu a correspondência entre as duas governanças no período pombalino. Analisa-se aqui os tópicos mais presentes, o comércio realizado, os pedidos de auxílio vindo de Angola e sua resolução por parte do governador da Bahia. As práticas e trocas aqui estudadas, descortinam aspectos do Império português na Idade Moderna, suas conexões, poderes e limites de ação. Para tal fim foram utilizados documentos oriundos do Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino – AHU. Utilizou-se o códice Eduardo Castro e Almeida para o período do rei D. José I e seu ministro Pombal, 1750 a 1777

Potencial competitivo em uma empresa de varejo no setor de construção : o caso da AC Coelho em Brasília

Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (graduação)—Universidade de Brasília, Faculdade de Economia, Administração e Contabilidade e Gestão de Políticas Públicas, Departamento de Administração, 2018.O setor de varejo é um dos que mais vêm causando impacto na economia brasileira nos últimos anos. Na construção civil, as empresas de varejo têm um importante papel, impactando em diversos fatores como: empregos, concorrência, variedade de produtos e serviços, dentre outros. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar uma empresa do setor de varejo na construção civil com base na percepção de seus clientes. Para isso, foi realizado um estudo quantitativo, possuindo como instrumento um questionário objetivo aplicado pessoalmente aos respondentes. Os resultados indicam que as percepções dos clientes, apesar das múltiplas variantes acerca de suas condições financeiras e sociais, foram sobremaneira parecidas acerca das questões propostas através do questionário, de modo que os resultados foram de maneira geral positivos, sendo o potencial competitivo bem percebido pelos clientes da empresa. Foi possível concluir que, apesar de algumas discrepâncias, em especial acerca de determinados constructos que sofreram com alguns apontamentos negativos, os participantes de maneira geral demonstraram estar satisfeitos com os serviços prestados pela empresa

Conflitos e problemas no cotidiano dos governadores da Bahia: 1750-1760

Portugal enfrentou dificuldades no governo das colônias; entendê-las e analisar as ações e atitudes, diante delas, dos governadores e demais funcionários régios é o objetivo desse artigo. Para atingir tal objetivo, fez-se uso da correspondência entre funcionários do Brasil e de Portugal entre 1750 a 1760. Esta documentação revela problemas comuns enfrentados pela Coroa: desvios de dinheiro, conflitos entre funcionários, falta de verbas, desobediências, doenças, disputas entre funcionários e colonos, entre outros

Hypervascular nodule in a fibrotic liver overloaded with iron: identification of a premalignant area with preserved liver architecture

BACKGROUND: The presence of a hypervascular nodule in a patient with cirrhosis is highly suggestive of a hepatocellular carcinoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55 year old man with idiopathic refractory anaemia was addressed for the cure of a recently appeared 3.3 cm hypervascular liver nodule. The nodule was not visible on the resected fresh specimen, but a paler zone was seen after formalin fixation. The surrounding liver was fibrotic (METAVIR score F3) and overloaded with iron. However, the paler zone, thought to be the nodule, had in fact a normal architecture, was less fibrotic, and contained some "portal tract-like structures" (but with arteries only); moreover, this paler area was devoid of iron, contained less glycogen and was characterized by foci of clear hepatocytes. CONCLUSION: In spite of the absence of architectural distortion, and a normal proliferative index, the possibility of premalignancy or malignancy should be considered in this type of hypervascular and hyposiderotic nodule, occurring in the context of an iron overloaded liver

Treatment of Auricular Deformity

Neste artigo, apresentamos um caso de uma deformidade auricular de difícil correção cirúrgica, envolvendo unidade escafo-helicoidal associada com a orelha proeminente em uma paciente de 25 anos de idade. Esta é uma malformação congênita incomum da orelha, o que resulta em uma borda helicoidal achatada, não curvilínea e dobrada sobre a escafa, comprometendo a aparência helicoidal. Foi proposto um tratamento cirúrgico com abordagem posterior e enxerto de cartilagem conchal à restauração do contorno borda helicoidal em um procedimento único. Esta nova abordagem proporciona um resultado agradável para o ouvido, principalmente por restaurar uma nova unidade escafo-helicoidal sem cicatriz na superfície orelha anterior e tratamento da orelha proeminente
