An interval fuzzy model for magnetic monitoring: estimation of a pollution index

    Get PDF
In this contribution, a methodology is reported in order to build an interval fuzzy model for the pollution index PLI (a composite index using relevant heavy metal concentration) with magnetic parameters as input variables. In general, modelling based on fuzzy set theory is designed to mimic how the human brain tends to classify imprecise information or data. The ??interval fuzzy model?? reported here, based on fuzzy logic and arithmetic of fuzzy numbers, calculates an ??estimation interval?? and seems to be an adequate mathematical tool for this nonlinear problem. For this model, fuzzy c-means clustering is used to partition data, hence the membership functions and rules are built. In addition, interval arithmetic is used to obtain the fuzzy intervals. The studied sets are different examples of pollution by different anthropogenic sources, in two different study areas: (a) soil samples collected in Antarctica and (b) road-deposited sediments collected in Argentina. The datasets comprise magnetic and chemical variables, and for both cases, relevant variables were selected: magnetic concentration-dependent variables, magnetic features-dependent variables and one chemical variable. The model output gives an estimation interval; its width depends on the data density, for the measured values. The results show not only satisfactory agreement between the estimation interval and data, but also provide valued information from the rules analysis that allows understanding the magnetic behaviour of the studied variables under different conditions.Fil: Chaparro, Mauro Alejandro Eduardo. Water is collected from a drain situated at the centre of a concrete cell that stores radioactive waste at ‘El Cabril’, which is the low and intermediate level radioactive waste disposal facility of Spain. This indicates flow of water within the cell. 2D numerical models have been made in order to reproduce and understand the processes that take place inside the cell. Temperature and relative humidity measured by sensors in the cells and thermo-hydraulic parameters from laboratory test have been used. Results show that this phenomenon is caused by capillary rise from the phreatic level, evaporation and condensation within the cell produced by temperature gradients caused by seasonal temperature fluctuations outside. At the centre of the cell, flow of gas and convection also play a role. Three remedial actions have been studied that may avoid the leakage of water from the drain.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

State terrorism was a process that affected most Latin American people several decades ago, although, as with all genocidal processes, its consequences and impact can still be felt. In Argentina, the processes of reparation and justice in cases of crimes against humanity generated multiple actions, among which the most important has been the creation of memory sites. Several such spaces have been created in recent decades throughout the country, with archeology often playing a significant part. This article explains the process of activating heritage in one case, that of the Monte Pelloni memory space, as well as its significance and social value, citizen participation, and the challenges that had to be faced in terms of the role of the archaeologist as a professional.Fil: Chaparro, Maria Gabriela. Examination of the Impact of Various Training Approaches on Different UAS Operator Populations

    Get PDF
In recent years, the UAS industry has extended beyond military and recreational use and is now positioned to become a major portion of the aviation industry. As we move toward UAS integration into the national airspace system, UAS operators need effective training to ensure safe operation. Training UAS operators in an engaging way is important to ensure the best performance and transfer of training. Training methods that elicit high levels of learner engagement have been shown to improve knowledge gains, performance, and therefore such training techniques provide an opportunity for improving UAS training effectiveness and transfer. The growth of the UAS industry across various domains such as first responders and industrial inspectors has resulted in a broad demographic of end users. Given this, training may need to be tailored based on the population to ensure an engaging experience. To examine this topic, a study was conducted in which UAS pilots from the student population and first responder population participated in UAS training to test the effect of different training approaches on learner engagement of different end user populations. Participants engaged in instructional videos, simulation challenges, and live obstacle courses and were measured on their engagement levels and performance. This presentation will describe the methods and findings associated with the study along with implications for the aviation industry

In this paper we analyze the interests, habits and ratings of schoolchildren attending the exhibition "Olavarría antes de Olavarría" made by a research group. Such studies, typically used by museums, serve to evaluate and (re)develop communication practices of archaeology. A qualitative- quantitative methodology was used and the selected variables included those of social order, opinions and values. This required of surveys, interviews, observations and records during guided tours of the schools. Among the most important results of the study it can be mentioned the good reception of the proposal by both teachers and student groups, except for the teen audience that is more critical and demanding. For their part, the teachers indicate two positive aspects of the exhibition, first its use as a triggering teaching strategy to continue classroom work and, secondly, its ability to internalize knowledge that were not accessible. On the other hand, as this exhibit is understood on its educational social and communicational role, it was also analyzed within the framework of the so-called exhibit assessment which allowed to emphasize their strengths and highlight some issues that had to be modified on the march. Finally, we consider it is important to generate proposals to the general public as a commitment of the University to social return, however, they are still targeted heritage activations that do not necessarily imply ownership and/or community assessment.Fil: Chaparro, Maria Gabriela. Advanced Air Mobility Human factors Considerations for Current eVTOL Pilot Interfaces

    Get PDF
Advanced air mobility (AAM) is a novel transportation concept using electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft to move people and cargo in urban and rural environments. The emergence of AAM has led to a range of different eVTOL vehicle designs at different stages in development, flight testing, and certification. Although these aircraft will serve similar markets, they will have different operational capabilities and pilot interfaces. These aircraft vary in whether they are (a) multi-rotor and have tilt-rotor capabilities, or (b) winged with tilt-wing capabilities, vectored thrust, fans, or propellers. The pilot interfaces in eVTOL align with the concept of simplified vehicle operations (SVO), which emphasizes the use of automation to simplify the physical control a pilot has on the aircraft, effectively reducing workload. Pilot interfaces range in their level of landing precision information, the number of displays, checklist presentation, and how battery information is presented. A preliminary survey was conducted to determine common trends in eVTOL pilot interfaces. Common trends identified include large displays, integration of flight information such as speed, altitude, heading, climb and descent rate, flight path, battery power information, origin and destination of the flight, weather information, aircraft range and location, tilt information, and rotation per minute (RPM). This presentation will investigate trends in the eVTOL pilot interfaces and the associated human factors issues that may arise due to these interfaces. Additionally, simulation testbeds available to examine the human factors issues associated with these pilot interfaces will be presented

An in situ experiment at the Grimsel Test Site (Switzerland) to study water-cement-rock interaction in fractured granite was modelled. It consisted of a hardened cement source in a borehole intersecting a water conducting fracture. Grimsel groundwater was injected into this borehole. Two other boreholes at about 0.56 m and 1.12 m from the emplacement borehole were used to monitor the evolution of water composition for 5 years. The modelling approach was based on a 1D radial model for the emplacement borehole and a small volume of rock (fault gouge) around it, and a 2D model for the rest of the domain. The results of the 1D model were used as input for the 2D model. Both models showed dissolution of the fault gouge minerals. Results from the 1D model showed dissolution of portlandite in the cement with an increase in porosity. The 2D model showed a reduction in porosity in the fault gouge due to mineral precipitation. Near the emplacement borehole ettringite precipitated. At the centre of the plume there was precipitation of C-A-S-H and hydrotalcite. At the edge of the hyperalkaline plume calcite, hydrotalcite and illite precipitated.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
