    Morphosemantic Categories in Chinese: An Interim Report

    This paper applies the notion of the homonerae - a sub-morphemic semantic unit - to the morphosemantic analysis of Cantonese. A number of major morphosemantic categories and subcategories in Chinese are identified through analysis of monomorphemic lexical items. The morphosemantic approach adopted is related to the 'shengxun' branch of traditional Chinese linguistics

    Surface electronic structure of a topological Kondo insulator candidate SmB6: insights from high-resolution ARPES

    The Kondo insulator SmB6 has long been known to exhibit low temperature (T < 10K) transport anomaly and has recently attracted attention as a new topological insulator candidate. By combining low-temperature and high energy-momentum resolution of the laser-based ARPES technique, for the first time, we probe the surface electronic structure of the anomalous conductivity regime. We observe that the bulk bands exhibit a Kondo gap of 14 meV and identify in-gap low-lying states within a 4 meV window of the Fermi level on the (001)-surface of this material. The low-lying states are found to form electron-like Fermi surface pockets that enclose the X and the Gamma points of the surface Brillouin zone. These states disappear as temperature is raised above 15K in correspondence with the complete disappearance of the 2D conductivity channels in SmB6. While the topological nature of the in-gap metallic states cannot be ascertained without spin (spin-texture) measurements our bulk and surface measurements carried out in the transport-anomaly-temperature regime (T < 10K) are consistent with the first-principle predicted Fermi surface behavior of a topological Kondo insulator phase in this material.Comment: 4 Figures, 6 Page

    Measurement of the Dynamical Structure Factor of a 1D Interacting Fermi Gas

    We present measurements of the dynamical structure factor S(q,ω)S(q,\omega) of an interacting one-dimensional (1D) Fermi gas for small excitation energies. We use the two lowest hyperfine levels of the 6^6Li atom to form a pseudo-spin-1/2 system whose s-wave interactions are tunable via a Feshbach resonance. The atoms are confined to 1D by a two-dimensional optical lattice. Bragg spectroscopy is used to measure a response of the gas to density ("charge") mode excitations at a momentum qq and frequency ω\omega. The spectrum is obtained by varying ω\omega, while the angle between two laser beams determines qq, which is fixed to be less than the Fermi momentum kFk_\textrm{F}. The measurements agree well with Tomonaga-Luttinger theory

    The impact of satellite temperature soundings on the forecasts of a small national meteorological service

    The impact of introducing satellite temperature sounding data on a numerical weather prediction model of a national weather service is evaluated. A dry five level, primitive equation model which covers most of the Northern Hemisphere, is used for these experiments. Series of parallel forecast runs out to 48 hours are made with three different sets of initial conditions: (1) NOSAT runs, only conventional surface and upper air observations are used; (2) SAT runs, satellite soundings are added to the conventional data over oceanic regions and North Africa; and (3) ALLSAT runs, the conventional upper air observations are replaced by satellite soundings over the entire model domain. The impact on the forecasts is evaluated by three verification methods: the RMS errors in sea level pressure forecasts, systematic errors in sea level pressure forecasts, and errors in subjective forecasts of significant weather elements for a selected portion of the model domain. For the relatively short range of the present forecasts, the major beneficial impacts on the sea level pressure forecasts are found precisely in those areas where the satellite sounding are inserted and where conventional upper air observations are sparse. The RMS and systematic errors are reduced in these regions. The subjective forecasts of significant weather elements are improved with the use of the satellite data. It is found that the ALLSAT forecasts are of a quality comparable to the SAR forecasts

    Lepton masses and mixing without Yukawa hierarchies

    We investigate the neutrino masses and mixing patten in a version of the SU(3)c⊗SU(3)L⊗U(1)XSU(3)_c\otimes SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X model with one extra exotic charged lepton per family as introduced by Ozer. It is shown that an extended scalar sector, together with a discrete Z2Z_2 symmetry, is able to reproduce a consistent lepton mass spectrum without a hierarchy in the Yukawa coupling constants, the former as a carefull balance between one universal see-saw and two radiative mechanisms.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.
