This reflective essay posits an examination on how migrant experiences and educational development shape identity and inform their core values. Under-standing the formal academic socialization experi-ences of migrants can serve to inform a commitment to the public good through exposure to academic readings, research and service that shape knowledge, values and perspective. This socialization trajectory grounded in knowledge and experience has enlight-ened the author’s perspective to improve access, guidance, opportunity, mentoring and engagement to migrant students. The leadership challenge is to master the art of “barn raising” as we share finite institutional resources

    Allergies on board

Food allergies are increasing exponentially each year, as well as the number of flights. This means that every time we will have more cases of allergic passengers to address during flights and at airports. These passengers are struggling to fly in a safe environment and to being able to find food they can eat. The purpose of this project is to raise awareness to all aviation stakeholders about the food allergies that may be provoked at airports and during flights and maintain the passenger experience. Due to different situations that may lead to death as the industry is not prepared, reason why they should be offering allergy friendly meals at least free from the top 5 allergens worldwide (wheat, nuts, soy, eggs, and dairy); medications for allergies should always be included in the first aid kit, no exceptions, encouraging aviation authorities to always check these kits to see that it is complete and medications are not expired; open a channel to declare allergies without the fear of discrimination so that the crew can communicate there is a passenger with a certain food allergen and prohibit the consumption of that food; develop and improve an allergy declaration system for airlines so that passengers can directly state their allergens and so Airline Catering Companies can plan to satisfy the passenger. I had an important limitation while developing the research. I started to detect a structure while I was finding the information, for example when I was reading the cases of passengers having allergic reactions, I saw that they reported their allergen and then the food offered on board contained that allergen and provoked the reaction. Since allergies is a public health issue around the world and the situations were clear and kind of the same, leaded me to conclude in the process that there is no more to research and that it is time to take action

Background and Objectives: More so than ever, the public is becoming exceedingly aware of esthetics, and will evaluate their treatment outcome based upon the improvement to their smile and overall enhancement of their facial appearance. There exists a debate in orthodontics, as to whether or not extractions harm the profile. The aim of this study was to determine if facial attractiveness is harmed in subjects having completed orthodontic treatment involving the extraction of four premolars both in repose and smiling when viewed in lateral profile. Another objective is to identify any impact upper incisor retraction has on facial attractiveness. Experimental Design and Methods: A sample of 39 subjects that had completed orthodontic treatment (19 extraction subjects and 20 non-extraction subjects) and had existing pre and post-treatment lateral cephalograms, and lateral repose and smiling photographs, were selected. Orthodontic professionals and laypersons were asked to view a presentation of all of the pre and post-treatment repose and smiling photos of the 39 subjects and asked evaluate facial attractiveness using a visual analogue scale. Amount of incisor retraction was calculated using superimpositions of pre and post-treatment lateral cephalograms. The data was analyzed using paired t-test, ANCOVA, and intra-class correlation coefficient. Results: For the repose data, a statistically significant difference between the pre-treatment and post-treatment ranking scores (p \u3c 0.05) was observed in 28 of the 39 subjects. 11 of the 39 subjects (28.2%) had a positive mean difference in repose. For the smiling data, a statistically significant difference between the pre-treatment and post-treatment ranking scores (p \u3c 0.05) was also observed in 28 of the 39 subjects. 30 of the 39 subjects (76.9%) had a positive mean difference in smiling. In repose, no statistically significant difference in attractiveness ranking scores between extraction and non-extraction subjects (p \u3e 0.05) was observed. A significant difference in attractiveness ranking scores between orthodontic professionals and laypersons was observed. Orthodontists gave higher attractiveness ranking scores than laypersons (p\u3c0.05) Additionally, a significant difference in attractiveness ranking scores among the different levels of retraction was found. Subjects in the \u3c-2mm and \u3e0 mm retraction groups were judged to be more attractive than subjects who are in the -2 – 0 mm retraction group (p\u3c0.05). In smiling, no significant differences were observed for any of the variables, nor when combined. Conclusions: Extraction therapy is not harmful to the repose profile or the smiling profile. More subjects were judged to be more attractive post-treatment in smiling than repose. Four premolar extraction made the profile more attractive in repose, whenever the incisors were retracted more than 2 mm. Orthodontists gave higher attractiveness ranking scores than laypersons in repose. There are no differences between judged facial attractiveness and non-extraction vs. extraction therapy, orthodontic vs. layperson, or amount of retraction in smiling

Digital Divide: Impact on Hispanic-Owned Small Businesses

    Get PDF
Information inequity creates a  major  gap  between  minority  and  non-minority  businesses  in the areas of business opportunities,  communication,  and  information  technologies.  The purpose of this study is to survey the technological potential of Hispanic-owned  small businesses (HSBs) to engage in e-commerce, specifically in e-procurement. The names of the HSBs were requested from the Office of Small Business Administration, which provided a national database of 9,800 businesses. A total of 1,200 businesses were randomly selected to receive the survey. Results indicate that small businesses have issues of concern regarding the process to access the Internet. HSBs find limitations in gaining access to e-commerce and its elements. Some limitations relate to financial constraints to buy computers; other limitations relate to Internet access methodology and ability to hire information technology personnel. Assisting HSBs to gain access to financial resources is crucial towards narrowing  the digital divide and therefore reducing/eliminating its effects on the long-term  survival of  Hispanic small businesses. Government agencies and non-profit and  private  business  organizations should develop financial and outreach opportunities to  enhance participation  of  Hispanic owned small  businesses

The study of decision-making has expanded empirical knowledge on the subject through research and studies that have offered explanations to many of the questions that are usually made. One of those questions had to do with whether the decision of the executive was only arational type, or there was also some intuition and emotion when deciding. The aim of this work is to consider the contributions madeby Daniel Kahneman and several of his collaborators, especially those related to administration, in order to start findingpossible  answers to the above mentioned question. The development of the proposed topic is analysed through the available literature on Daniel Kahneman and colleagues’ thinking. Different pieces of work that integrate their ideas, highlighting those thatspecially impact on Administration are mentioned. As a result of this work we see the relationship thatnaturally exists between what Kahneman called System 1 (intuitive) and System 2 (rational), exposing the errors and biases of quick thinking and influence of the intuitive on our thinking and behavior.

A comparison between expert and beginner learning for motor skill development in a virtual reality serious game

In order to be used for skill development and skill maintenance, virtual environments require accurate simulation of the physical phenomena involved in the process of the task being trained. The accuracy needs to be conveyed in a multimodal fashion with varying parameterisations still being quantified, and these are a function of task, prior knowledge, sensory efficacy and human perception. Virtual reality (VR) has been integrated from a didactic perspective in many serious games and shown to be effective in the pedological process. This paper interrogates whether didactic processes introduced into a VR serious game, by taking advantage of augmented virtuality to modify game attributes, can be effective for both beginners and experts to a task. The task in question is subjective performance in a clay pigeon shooting simulation. The investigation covers whether modified game attributes influence skill and learning in a complex motor task and also investigates whether this process is applicable to experts as well as beginners to the task. VR offers designers and developers of serious games the ability to provide information in the virtual world in a fashion that is impossible in the real world. This introduces the question of whether this is effective and transfers skill adoption into the real world and also if a-priori knowledge influences the practical nature of this information in the pedagogic process. Analysis is conducted via a between-subjects repeated measure ANOVA using a 2 \backslashtimes 22×2factorial design to address these questions. The results show that the different training provided affects the performance in this task (N=57N=57N=57). The skill improvement is still evidenced in repeated measures when information and guidance is removed. This effect does not exist under a control condition. Additionally, we separate by an expert and non-expert group to deduce if a-priori knowledge influences the effect of the presented information, it is shown that it does not
