Weighting functions for various observation noise scenarios are determined using maximum likelihood estimation theory.     Moving object detection using adaptive subband decomposition and fractional lower order statistics in video sequences

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.In this paper, a moving object detection method in video sequences is described. In the 3rst step, the camera motion is eliminated using motion compensation. An adaptive subband decomposition structure is then used to analyze the motion compensated image. In the “low–high” and “high–low” subimages moving objects appear as outliers and they are detected using a statistical detection test based on fractional lower-order statistics. It turns out that the distribution of the subimage pixels is almost Gaussian in general. On the other hand, at the object boundaries the distribution of the pixels in the subimages deviates from Gaussianity due to the existence of outliers. By detecting the regions containing outliers the boundaries of the moving objects are estimated. Simulation examples are presented. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved

    Adaptive methods for dithering color images

A common remedy is the use of dithering techniques that take advantage of the lower sensitivity of the eye to spatial resolution and exchange higher color resolution with lower spatial resolution. In this paper, an adaptive error diffusion method for color images is presented. The error diffusion filter coefficients are updated by a normalized least mean square-type (LMS-type) algorithm to prevent textural contours, color impulses, and color shifts, which are among the most common side effects of the standard dithering algorithms. Another novelty of the new method is its vector character: Previous applications of error diffusion have treated the individual color components of an image separately. Here, we develop a general vector approach and demonstrate through simulation studies that superior results are achieved. © 1997 IEEE

    Detection of microcalcifications in mammograms using higher order statistics

In this method, the mammogram image is first processed by a subband decomposition filterbank. The bandpass subimage is divided into overlapping square regions in which skewness and kurtosis as measures of the asymmetry and impulsiveness of the distribution are estimated. The detection method utilizes these two parameters. A region with high positive skewness and kurtosis is marked as a region of interest. Simulation results show that this method is successful in detecting regions with microcalcifications

    Search for axions in streaming dark matter

    A new search strategy for the detection of the elusive dark matter (DM) axion is proposed. The idea is based on streaming DM axions, whose flux might get temporally enormously enhanced due to gravitational lensing. This can happen if the Sun or some planet (including the Moon) is found along the direction of a DM stream propagating towards the Earth location. The experimental requirements to the axion haloscope are a wide-band performance combined with a fast axion rest mass scanning mode, which are feasible. Once both conditions have been implemented in a haloscope, the axion search can continue parasitically almost as before. Interestingly, some new DM axion detectors are operating wide-band by default. In order not to miss the actually unpredictable timing of a potential short duration signal, a network of co-ordinated axion antennae is required, preferentially distributed world-wide.     Establishing Best Practices for X-57 Maxwell CFD Database Generation

    The X-57 Maxwell is NASAs latest electric airplane concept that has been simulated for aerodynamic performance using the structured overset and unstructured grid solvers within the Launch Ascent and Vehicle Aerodynamics (LAVA) solver framework as well as the unstructured polyhedral grid solver in Star-CCM+ for code-to-code comparison. In order to validate the predictions, comparisons were made between the CFD solutions and experimental data collected in the 12-foot Low-Speed Wind Tunnel at NASA Langley Research Center. The simulations are in preparation for the development of a comprehensive aerodynamic database which will assess aircraft performance at a variety of conditions. The findings from these simulations will establish the best practices for mesh resolution, numerical discretization, and turbulence modeling to be used for this database. Preliminary database results have shown that best-practices learned from the initial validation simulations will potentially reduce error in X-57 aerodynamic loads and moments relative to experiment by up to 14%

Video surveillance cameras and computer vision methods are widely used in many security applications. It is also possible to use security cameras and special purpose infrared surveillance cameras for fire detection. This requires intelligent video processing techniques for detection and analysis of uncontrolled fire behavior. VFD may help reduce the detection time compared to the currently available sensors in both indoors and outdoors because cameras can monitor “volumes” and do not have transport delay that the traditional “point” sensors suffer from. It is possible to cover an area of 100 km2 using a single pan-tiltzoom camera placed on a hilltop for wildfire detection. Another benefit of the VFD systems is that they can provide crucial information about the size and growth of the fire, direction of smoke propagation. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserve

    Loss of heme oxygenase 2 causes reduced expression of genes in cardiac muscle development and contractility and leads to cardiomyopathy in mice

    Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common breathing disorder that affects a significant portion of the adult population. In addition to causing excessive daytime sleepiness and neurocognitive effects, OSA is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease; however, the underlying mechanisms are not completely understood. Using exposure to intermittent hypoxia (IH) to mimic OSA, we have recently reported that mice exposed to IH exhibit endothelial cell (EC) activation, which is an early process preceding the development of cardiovascular disease. Although widely used, IH models have several limitations such as the severity of hypoxia, which does not occur in most patients with OSA. Recent studies reported that mice with deletion of hemeoxygenase 2 (Hmox2-/-), which plays a key role in oxygen sensing in the carotid body, exhibit spontaneous apneas during sleep and elevated levels of catecholamines. Here, using RNA-sequencing we investigated the transcriptomic changes in aortic ECs and heart tissue to understand the changes that occur in Hmox2-/- mice. In addition, we evaluated cardiac structure, function, and electrical properties by using echocardiogram and electrocardiogram in these mice. We found that Hmox2-/- mice exhibited aortic EC activation. Transcriptomic analysis in aortic ECs showed differentially expressed genes enriched in blood coagulation, cell adhesion, cellular respiration and cardiac muscle development and contraction. Similarly, transcriptomic analysis in heart tissue showed a differentially expressed gene set enriched in mitochondrial translation, oxidative phosphorylation and cardiac muscle development. Analysis of transcriptomic data from aortic ECs and heart tissue showed loss of Hmox2 gene might have common cellular network footprints on aortic endothelial cells and heart tissue. Echocardiographic evaluation showed that Hmox2-/- mice develop progressive dilated cardiomyopathy and conduction abnormalities compared to Hmox2+/+ mice. In conclusion, we found that Hmox2-/- mice, which spontaneously develop apneas exhibit EC activation and transcriptomic and functional changes consistent with heart failure

    CS-Net: Channel and Spatial Attention Network for Curvilinear Structure Segmentation

    The detection of curvilinear structures in medical images, e.g., blood vessels or nerve fibers, is important in aiding management of many diseases. In this work, we propose a general unifying curvilinear structure segmentation network that works on different medical imaging modalities: optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A), color fundus image, and corneal confocal microscopy (CCM). Instead of the U-Net based convolutional neural network, we propose a novel network (CS-Net) which includes a self-attention mechanism in the encoder and decoder. Two types of attention modules are utilized - spatial attention and channel attention, to further integrate local features with their global dependencies adaptively. The proposed network has been validated on five datasets: two color fundus datasets, two corneal nerve datasets and one OCT-A dataset. Experimental results show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods, for example, sensitivities of corneal nerve fiber segmentation were at least 2% higher than the competitors.
