Introduction: Acromion curved and hooked play a key role in shoulder impingement syndrome. Little is known about the acromial type in Brazilian population. Aim: To describe the acromial type profile in Brazilian young adults; to evaluate its correlation to gender and handedness and the occurrence of symmetry between genders. Methodology: Forty acromions of 20 Brazilian adults, both genders, between 21-25 years old were studied. The acromion type was classified by Bigliani/Epstein method by supraspinatus outlet view radiographs. Results: As there was no gender difference in the occurrence of acromial type, we considered male and female groups together. Thus, of the 20 right acromions, we found 5 (25%) type I, 8 (40%) type II and 7 (35%) type III. Of the 20 left acromions, we found 4 (20%) type I, 11 (55%) type II and 5 (25%) type III. The only left-handed volunteer (100%) presented for the right and left shoulder acromial type III. Of the 19 right-handed volunteers, 5 (26.3%) presented right acromion type I, 8 (42.1%) type II, and 6 (31.6%) type III; for the left acromion, 4 (21.1%) presented type I, 11 (57.9%) type II, and 4 (21.1%) type III. Acromial symmetry occurred in female (60%) and male (70%) groups. Conclusion: Type II acromion was the most predominant for right and left shoulder in Brazilian young adults. There was no correlation between acromial type and gender. It was not possible to analyze the correlation between acromial type and handedness. Acromial type tends to be symmetric in our sample

The use of microorganisms as a plant growth promoter such as Bacillus subtilis is an alternative that may provide benefits to soybean cultivation, improved development, and productivity. The objective of this work was to evaluate the biomass and productivity of soybean inoculated by Bacillus subtilis Bs10 cultivated in field, in Gurupi, Tocantins, in the 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 seasons. Four treatments inoculated with liquid formulation based on Bacillus subtilis Bs10 were carried out in different doses (100, 200, 300 and 400 ml for 50 kg of seeds) and compared to a commercial product based on B. subtilis (positive control) and a non-inoculated treatment (absolute control). Inoculation by B. subtilis Bs10 positively influenced biomass, stand maintenance and yield of soybean under field conditions in both harvests. These yields were 26.6% (200 mL) and 31.8% (300 mL) higher than the absolute control treatment for a 2015/2016 seasons and between 10.8 and 15.43% for a 2016/2017 seasons. Thus, there were significant results from the dose tested 200 mL of inoculant per 50 kg of seed. The strain of B. subtilis Bs10 can be recommended as plant growth promoting inoculant in soybean

Since the efficacy of topical fluoride products is related to the fluoride (F) availability and its reactivity with enamel, this study was conducted. The F concentration of the following materials was verified: I- acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel (1.23% F), II- APF foam (1.23% F) and III- Varnish (2.26% F). Forty blocks of bovine enamel were divided into 4 groups and treated according to the materials described, being one of them used as control. Loosely bound fluoride (''CaF2'') was determined on enamel after extraction with 1.0M KOH and analyzed by ion-selective electrode. Total F concentration found in gel was 12,642, in foam 12,755 and in varnish 23,183 mg F/g. All products formed statistically higher amounts of ''CaF2'' on enamel compared to the control group (p 0.05). Thus, ''CaF2'' formation was not proportional to the total F content in the products, suggesting that the pH and the vehicle used are more important.1218-2

Mature weight (MW) of cows is related to the costs of their production. Usually, cows with moderate MW are more efficient in challenging environments, such as those available in the production systems in Brazil. In the present study, the selection index comprises the following traits: conformation, finishing precocity, musculature at weaning (WC, WP, WM) yearling (YC, YP and YM), scrotal circumference at yearling (SC), days to gain 160kg from birth to weaning (D160) and 240kg after weaning (D240). This are related to birth weight gain at weaning (WG) and from weaning to yearling (YG). The mature (MW) and birth weight (BW) traits were not considered in the selection index. The aim of this study was to estimate the values for the genetic trends (GT) of some important selection (MW) and economic traits (BW). A bi-character analysis of MW and other characteristics was performed to estimate the (co)variance components and genetic parameters. The GT results obtained for MW were null (0.0065% or 0.02718kg per year) in the period 1990-2007. The GT values were determined for BW (-0.0650% or -0.02017kg), WG (0.0758% or 0.0865kg), YG (0.1051% or 0.11377kg), and MW (0.0393% or 0.11276kg) per year. The visual score values (in score units) were also determined for GTat weaning [WC (0.2310%; 0.00707), WP (0.3624%; 0.3623%),aWM (0.01149; 0.01087)] yearling [YC (0.3256%; 0.00990), YP (0.4795%; 0.01496),YM (0.5041%; 0.01457)] per year. Index-based selection was effective to promote genetic progress in WG, WC, WP, WM, YG, YC, YP, and YM characteristics keeping BW and MW constant.O peso adulto das vacas (PV) está relacionado com os custos de produção.

Conventional chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia: a Brazilian experience

    Get PDF
CONTEXT: Young patients affected by acute myeloid leukemia (AML) achieve complete remission (CR) using conventional chemotherapy in about 55-85%. However, 30% of patients fail to achieve CR and the remission duration is often only about 12 months. More intensive treatment after CR seems to be necessary in order to maintain CR and obtain a definitive cure. In Brazil, few reports have been published on this important subject. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe a Brazilian experience in the treatment of de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in younger adult patients (age < 60 years). DESIGN: Retrospective analysis. SETTING: University Hospital, Hematology and Hemotherapy Center, State University of Campinas, Brazil. PARTICIPANTS: Newly diagnosed cases of de novo AML in the period from January 1994 to December 1998 were evaluated retrospectively, in relation to response to treatment, overall survival (OS) and disease free survival (DFS). Cases with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) were also included in this analysis. RESULTS: On the basis of an intention to treat, 78 cases of AML, including 17 cases of APL, were evaluated. The overall median follow-up was 272 days. The complete remission (CR) rate was 63.6% in the AML group (excluding APL) and 78% in the APL group. The 5-year estimated disease-free survival (DFS) was 80% for the APL group and 34% for the AML group (P = 0.02). The 5-year estimated overall survival (OS) was 52% for the APL group and 20.5% for the AML group, respectively (P = NS). Relapse was observed in 12/39 (30.7%) patients with AML and 1/11 (9%) with APL. CONCLUSIONS: These results are similar to those reported in the literature. However, relapse and mortality rates remain high, and a search for more aggressive strategies in order to prevent relapse is recommended.CONTEXTO: Pacientes adultos com diagnóstico de leucemia mielóide aguda (LMA) obtém remissão completa (RC) com quimioterapia convencional em cerca de 55-85% dos casos, e a sua duração é de aproximadamente 12 meses.

Cathepsin K induces platelet dysfunction and affects cell signaling in breast cancer - molecularly distinct behavior of cathepsin K in breast cancer

Background: Breast cancer comprises clinically and molecularly distinct tumor subgroups that differ in cell histology and biology and show divergent clinical phenotypes that impede phase III trials, such as those utilizing cathepsin K inhibitors. Here we correlate the epithelial-mesenchymal-like transition breast cancer cells and cathepsin K secretion with activation and aggregation of platelets. Cathepsin K is up-regulated in cancer cells that proteolyze extracellular matrix and contributes to invasiveness. Although proteolytically activated receptors (PARs) are activated by proteases, the direct interaction of cysteine cathepsins with PARs is poorly understood. In human platelets, PAR-1 and -4 are highly expressed, but PAR-3 shows low expression and unclear functions. Methods: Platelet aggregation was monitored by measuring changes in turbidity. Platelets were immunoblotted with anti-phospho and total p38, Src-Tyr-416, FAK-Tyr-397, and TGF beta monoclonal antibody. Activation was measured in a flow cytometer and calcium mobilization in a confocal microscope. Mammary epithelial cells were prepared from the primary breast cancer samples of 15 women with Luminal-B subtype to produce primary cells. Results: We demonstrate that platelets are aggregated by cathepsin K in a dose-dependent manner, but not by other cysteine cathepsins. PARs-3 and -4 were confirmed as the cathepsin K target by immunodetection and specific antagonists using a fibroblast cell line derived from PARs deficient mice. Moreover, through co-culture experiments, we show that platelets activated by cathepsin K mediated the up-regulation of SHH, PTHrP, OPN, and TGF beta in epithelial-mesenchymal-like cells from patients with Luminal B breast cancer. Conclusions: Cathepsin K induces platelet dysfunction and affects signaling in breast cancer cells.Associacao Beneficente de Coleta de Sangue (Colsan)Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP)Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (CNPq)Univ Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Gynecol, BR-04024002 Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilCOLSAN, Charitable Assoc Blood Collect, BR-04080006 Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Biophys, BR-04024002 Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Biochem, BR-04024002 Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilAntonio Prudente Fdn, AC Camargo Canc Ctr, AC Camargo Hosp Biobank, Dept Pathol, BR-01509010 Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Cellular Gynecol Lab, Dept Gynecol, Rua Napoleao Barros 608, BR-04024002 Sao Paulo, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Gynecol, BR-04024002 Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Biophys, BR-04024002 Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Biochem, BR-04024002 Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Cellular Gynecol Lab, Dept Gynecol, Rua Napoleao Barros 608, BR-04024002 Sao Paulo, BrazilFAPESP: 2012/19780-3FAPESP: 2012/19851-8FAPESP: 2009/53766-5Web of Scienc

Validation Of The Ebmt Risk Score In Chronic Myeloid Leukemia In Brazil And Allogeneic Transplant Outcome.

The management of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) has changed radically since the introduction of imatinib therapy. The decision of whether to offer a patient a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) must be based on the probability of success of the procedure. The aim of this retrospective analysis of 1,084 CML patients who received an allogeneic HSCT in 10 Brazilian Centers between February 1983 and March 2003 was to validate the EBMT risk score. The study population comprised 647 (60%) males and 437 (40%) females, with a median age of 32 years old (range 1 - 59); 898 (83%) were in chronic phase, 146 (13%) were in accelerated phase and 40 (4%) were in blast crisis; 151 (14%) were younger than 20 years old, 620 (57%) were between 20 and 40 and 313 (29%) were older than 40; 1,025 (94%) received an HLA fully matched sibling transplant and only 59 (6%) received an unrelated transplant. In 283 cases (26%) a male recipient received a graft from a female donor. The interval from diagnosis to transplantation was less than 12 months in 223 (21%) cases and greater in 861 (79%). The overall survival, disease-free survival, transplant-related mortality and relapse incidence were 49%, 50%, 45% and 25%, respectively. Of the 1084 patients, 179 (17%) had a risk score of 0 or 1, 397 (37%) had a score of 2, 345 (32%) had a score of 3, 135 (12%) had a score of 4 and 28 (2%) a score of 5 or 6. The overall survival (OS) rate in patients with risk scores 0-1 and 2 was similar (58% and 55%, respectively) but significantly better than that in patients with scores 3 or more (score 3 - 44%, 4 - 36 % and 5-6 - 27%, respectively) pp<0.001). Disease-free survival (DFS) and transplant related mortality (TRM) in a patients with a score of 3 or more were 46% and 49%, respectively and the relapse rate beyond score 5-6 was 77%. Disease status had a negative impact on all outcomes (OS, DFS, TRM, and relapse). The OS rate for male recipients of a graft from a female donor was 40% compared to 52% among the other donor-recipient pairs (p=0.004). DFS and TRM were significant for disease phase and female donor-male recipient (p<0.001 and p<0.003, respectively). In our experience, age and interval between diagnosis and transplant did influence OS, DFS, TRM, and relapse rate. Our results validate the EBMT risk score in the context of a developing country and confirm its usefulness for making point decisions in the imatinib era.90232-
