Genre Categorization in Contemporary British and US-American Novels
In his article Genre Categorization in Contemporary British and US-American Novels Carlos Ceia discusses a certain type of resistance to genre categorization in many novels in contemporary literature. Many British and US-American contemporary novels show patterns in narrative creativity where novel-writing techniques are sometimes more important than the traditional subject matter driven work of fiction. Ceia reviews experimental/metafictional novels which do not show intent to fulfil an aesthetic role pre-determined in a certain moment in history. Not having this kind of burden before them, many contemporary British and US-American novelists devote their artistic imagination more to the potential of the narrative text rather than to the act of the work of a specific literary art
do espaço e do tempo. Poucos poetas resistem a não falar destas duas
categorias.
as metáforas possíveis do espaço e do tempo. Iremos refutar este
pré-conceito
O direito natural e a natureza da literatura
Natural law is the most ethereal of all the forms of law, because it is not adjustable to the writing of a code, is not even writable like any form of ethics, since it is based on the acceptance of a universality that comes before any written register of subjective thought. Writers of all times used natural law like any literary theme, but also as a kind of protection for the explanation of the theories defended in his works. In the literary field alone, natural law dominated the European Renaissance, particularly in England. We will concentrate our inquiry in this period and in-between Thomas More and William Shakespeare, without forgetting the classic inheritance.

poema. O dinheiro é a capacidade de gênio do leitor. Ainda no plano

Foreign language education in portuguese higher education institutions: the state of play
Over the last 15 to 20 years, changes in foreign language teaching policies in Portuguese higher education institutions (HEIs) have been subject to little discussion and less inter-institutional dialogue. Each institution has absorbed different European directives, and more specifically adapted its context in response to the Bologna Process, according to its own interpretation leading to widespread distortion across foreign language teaching curricula. While demand for foreign language courses remains high in Portuguese HEIs there has been little formal research and scarce funding available for projects related to introducing innovativepractices and materials. This paper provides a critical reading of the current state of play in this crucial sphere of higher education in Portugal
Três poetas do desassossego no Novo Cancioneiro
UID/ELT/04097/2013Álvaro Feijó, Sidónio Muralha and Políbio Gomes dos Santos are three Portuguese poets coming into literary age during the 1940s when an important collection of books was published (Novo Cancioneiro) in Portugal’s Salazar. The new poets tried to be involved in the New Realism aesthetic power to overcome Salazar’s social repression and, through a new language far from the individual-driven patterns of late Modernism, they managed to offer a way to translate into verse people’s suffering, poverty and social and political seclusion. Each of the three poets introduced in this article follow a different path after 1944, and that is one reason why they failed as a literary group since they did not work under the very same flag, but they shared the same courage of other senior writers who defied the fascist regime at the same time. The three poets remain almost unknown and untouched in terms of literary criticism until today.publishersversionpublishe
Estudo português de miocardiopatias dilatadas familiares : estudo FATIMA
© Sociedade Portuguesa de CardiologiaDilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a myocardial disease, characterized by ventricular dilatation and impaired systolic function, that in more than 30% of cases has a familial or genetic origin. Given its age-dependent penetrance, DCM frequently manifests in adults by signs or symptoms of heart failure, arrhythmias or sudden death. The predominant mode of inheritance is autosomal dominant, and in these cases mutations are identified in genes coding for cytoskeletal, sarcomeric or nuclear envelope proteins. To date, most studies aimed at molecular diagnosis of DCM have been in selected families, or in larger groups of patients, but screening for mutations in a limited number of genes. Consequently, the epidemiology of mutations in familial DCM remains unknown. There is thus a need for multicenter studies, involving screening for a wide range of mutations in several families and in cases of idiopathic DCM. The present article describes the methodology of a multicenter study, aimed at clinical and molecular characterization of familial DCM patients in the Portuguese population.
Quantifying and addressing the prevalence and bias of study designs in the environmental and social sciences
Building trust in science and evidence-based decision-making depends heavily on the credibility of studies and their findings. Researchers employ many different study designs that vary in their risk of bias to evaluate the true effect of interventions or impacts. Here, we empirically quantify, on a large scale, the prevalence of different study designs and the magnitude of bias in their estimates. Randomised designs and controlled observational designs with pre-intervention sampling were used by just 23% of intervention studies in biodiversity conservation, and 36% of intervention studies in social science. We demonstrate, through pairwise within-study comparisons across 49 environmental datasets, that these types of designs usually give less biased estimates than simpler observational designs. We propose a model-based approach to combine study estimates that may suffer from different levels of study design bias, discuss the implications for evidence synthesis, and how to facilitate the use of more credible study designs.Fil: Christie, Alec P..
