    The IDAMS Processor is a package of task routines and support software that performs convolution filtering, image expansion, fast Fourier transformation, and other operations on a digital image tape. A unique task control card for that program, together with any necessary parameter cards, selects each processing technique to be applied to the input image. A variable number of tasks can be selected for execution by including the proper task and parameter cards in the input deck. An executive maintains control of the run; it initiates execution of each task in turn and handles any necessary error processing

    Semi-analytic Simulations of Galactic Winds: Volume Filling Factor, Ejection of Metals and Parameter Study

    We present a semi-analytic treatment of galactic winds within high resolution, large scale cosmological N-body simulations of a LCDM Universe. The evolution of winds is investigated by following the expansion of supernova driven superbubbles around the several hundred thousand galaxies that form in an approximately spherical region of space with diameter 52 Mpc/h and mean density close to the mean density of the Universe. We focus our attention on the impact of winds on the diffuse intergalactic medium. Initial conditions for mass loss at the base of winds are taken from Shu, Mo and Mao (2003). Results are presented for the volume filling factor and the mass fraction of the IGM affected by winds and their dependence on the model parameters is carefully investigated. The mass loading efficiency of bubbles is a key factor to determine the evolution of winds and their global impact on the IGM: the higher the mass loading, the later the IGM is enriched with metals. Galaxies with 10^9 < M_* < 10^10 M_sun are responsible for most of the metals ejected into the IGM at z=3, while galaxies with M_* < 10^9 M_sun give a non negligible contribution only at higher redshifts, when larger galaxies have not yet assembled. We find a higher mean IGM metallicity than Lyalpha forest observations suggest and we argue that the discrepancy may be explained by the high temperatures of a large fraction of the metals in winds, which may not leave detectable imprints in absorption in the Lyalpha forest.Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures.     The rural almshouse population in Missouri

    Cooperative rural research."June, 1938."This is a study of the rural almshouse in Missouri. The various types of almshouse administration and methods of inmate care are defined and described, together with the social characteristics of the inmate population. As a matter of considerable contemporary interest an analysis was made of the eligibility of inmates for old age assistance in order to determine the extent to which counties might be relieved of their inmate population through this type of public assistance. Examination of data on nearly 3,000 inmates indicated that more than one-half (52.4 per cent) were under 70 years of age which is the present minimum age limit for old age assistance. It was further determined that at least one-half of the ones eligible due to age were not likely to be approved for old age assistance since they were either physically or mentally disabled. It was concluded that less than one-fourth of the total inmate population might qualify for old age assistance and that additional provisions would be necessary if the rural counties are to be relieved of the care of their almshouse population.By C.T.     The Association Between Prenatal Infection and Adolescent Behavior:Investigating Multiple Prenatal, Perinatal, and Childhood Second Hits

    Objective: Exposure to infection during pregnancy may be a potential risk factor for later psychopathology, but large-scale epidemiological studies investigating associations between prenatal infection and long-term offspring behavioral problems in the general population are scarce. In our study, we aimed to investigate (1) the association between prenatal infection and adolescent behavior, (2) putative underlying pathways (mediation) and (3) ā€˜second hitsā€™ interacting with prenatal infection to increase the risk of adolescent behavior problems (moderation).Method: Our study was embedded in a prospective Dutch pregnancy cohort (Generation R; n=2,213 mother-child dyads). We constructed a comprehensive prenatal infection score comprising common infections for each trimester of pregnancy. At age 13-16 years, we assessed total, internalizing, and externalizing problems, and autistic traits using the Child Behavioral Checklist and the Social Responsiveness Scale, respectively. We investigated maternal lifestyle and nutrition, perinatal (placental health and delivery outcomes) and child health (lifestyle, traumatic events, infections) as mediators and moderators.Results: We observed associations of prenatal infection with adolescent total behavioral, internalizing, and externalizing problems. The association between prenatal infection and internalizing problems was moderated by higher levels of maternal psychopathology, alcohol and tobacco use, and a higher number of traumatic childhood events. We found no association between prenatal infection and autistic traits. Yet, children exposed to prenatal infections and maternal substance use, and/or traumatic childhood events had a higher risk of adolescent autistic traits.Conclusion: Prenatal infection may be a risk factor for later psychiatric problems as well as a disease primer making individuals susceptible to other hits later in life. <br/

    Neural Profile of Callous Traits in Children: AĀ Population-Based Neuroimaging Study

    BACKGROUND: Callous traits during childhood, e.g., lack of remorse and shallow affect, are a key risk marker for antisocial behavior. Although callous traits have been found to be associated with structural and functional brain alterations, evidence to date has been almost exclusively limited to small, high-risk samples of boys. We characterized gray and white matter brain correlates of callous traits in over 2000 children from the general population. METHODS: Data on mother-reported callous traits and brain imaging were collected at age 10 years from participants of the Generation R Study. Structural magnetic resonance imaging was used to investigate brain morphology using volumetric indices and whole-brain analyses (nĀ = 2146); diffusion tensor imaging was used to assess global and specific white matter microstructure (nĀ = 2059). RESULTS: Callous traits were associated with lower global brain (e.g., total brain) volumes as well as decreased cortical surface area in frontal and temporal regions. Global mean diffusivity was negatively associated with callous traits, suggesting higher white matter microstructural integrity in children with elevated callous traits. Multiple individual tracts, including the uncinate and cingulum, contributed to this global association. Whereas no gender differences were observed for global volumetric indices, white matter associations were present only in girls. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to provide a systematic characterization of the structural neural profile of callous traits in the general pediatric population. These findings extend previous work based on selected samples by demonstrating that childhood callous traits in the general population are characterized by widespread macrostructural and microstructural differences across the brain
