Mazanet\u27s 1693 Report to the Viceroy: The Role of Alterity, Bare Life, and Agency in the Attitude of a Spanish Friar against Texas Amerindians

    Get PDF
This study evaluates Spanish missionary Damián Mazanet’s beliefs and attitudes about the Texas Indians expressed in a 1693 letter. In order to control the Amerindians, Mazanet represents them as beings with bare life, which gives him permission to implement biopolitical tactics such as the reorganization of Indian populations around the mission, their removal from their own lands, and their conversion by force. In spite of this, the examination of textual silences in the letter shows such Amerindians as agents who actually refuse to be subjected by the Spanish friars and soldiers

Physician Well Being and Patient Satisfaction Among Employed Physicians

    Get PDF
Understanding physician well-being may help prevent physician burnout, improve the quality of care they provide to their patients, reduce medical errors, and improve patient satisfaction. Using the biopsychosocial-spiritual theory as the conceptual framework, this quantitative study examined the relationship between: (a) physician well-being and patient satisfaction, (b) physician gender and physician well-being, (c) primary care providers\u27 and specialists\u27 well-being, (d) patient satisfaction based on physician specialty, and (e) the duration of practice and physician well-being. All of the 87 employed physicians in a Florida regional hospital were invited to respond to a physician well-being questionnaire; a response rate of 58.4% was achieved. Patient satisfaction information was obtained through archived data of 4,500 patient surveys. Data were analyzed utilizing linear regression to examine the relationship between patient satisfaction and duration of physicians\u27 practice, with the dependent variable, physician well-being. Two logistic regression analyses were utilized to examine (a) differences between physician well-being, gender, and specialty; and (b) differences between patient satisfaction and physician specialty. There were no significant relationships evident; however, it was speculated that the nonsignificance may be due to the small available sample of physicians. Future research on physician well-being may use the current findings to refine the conceptual framework and increase the understanding of how physician well-being can prevent physician burnout, improve the quality of care they provide to their patients, reduce medical errors, and improve patient satisfaction. Future research in this area will have the potential to increase the quality of patient care that will address positive social change

Reticulophagy and Ribophagy: Regulated Degradation of Protein Production Factories

    Get PDF
During autophagy, cytosol, protein aggregates, and organelles are sequestered into double-membrane vesicles called autophagosomes and delivered to the lysosome/vacuole for breakdown and recycling of their basic components. In all eukaryotes this pathway is important for adaptation to stress conditions such as nutrient deprivation, as well as to regulate intracellular homeostasis by adjusting organelle number and clearing damaged structures. For a long time, starvation-induced autophagy has been viewed as a nonselective transport pathway; however, recent studies have revealed that autophagy is able to selectively engulf specific structures, ranging from proteins to entire organelles. In this paper, we discuss recent findings on the mechanisms and physiological implications of two selective types of autophagy: ribophagy, the specific degradation of ribosomes, and reticulophagy, the selective elimination of portions of the ER

A Proposed Typology Of Odyssey Slot Machine Gamblers

This paper discusses the development of a typology of gamblers who play the Odyssey slot machine. Qualitative research methods were employed, using an ethnographic approach to the research setting. Two typologies are presented and discussed, one for the Odyssey Players and a second for the Odyssey Observers. While the potential application of these two typologies to the more general classification of all slot machine gamblers is unknown, it is believed that this paper represents the first study of its kind in the gaming industry. As such, it may provide a foundation for both academics who are interested in conducting further research in this area, and to gaming industry practitioners who may fmd the information useful in better understanding their customers

    Deep learning for chaos detection

    Get PDF
In this article, we study how a chaos detection problem can be solved using Deep Learning techniques. We consider two classical test examples: the Logistic map as a discrete dynamical system and the Lorenz system as a continuous dynamical system. We train three types of artificial neural networks (multi-layer perceptron, convolutional neural network, and long short-term memory cell) to classify time series from the mentioned systems into regular or chaotic. This approach allows us to study biparametric and triparametric regions in the Lorenz system due to their low computational cost compared to traditional techniques

Continuidad con la épica criolla mexicana e innovación en la «Historia de la Nueva México», 1610

This is an introductory study to Gaspar de Villagrá’s History of New Mexico (1610) in the context of the Cortés epic cycle tradition. The concept of «epic continuity» is utilized in order to better understand how the poem adheres to epic tradition at the same time that it goes through formal changes needed for its renovation. Part of the renovation is the inclusion of prose as a legal defense strategy, and its use as a vehicle for the struggles of Mexican Creoles. It is proposed that this poem belongs in a Frontier Creole epic sub-cycle.

Projecte realitzat en col.laboració amb el centre Purdue UniversityOptical microscopy exhibits many challenges for digital image analysis. In general, microscopy volumes are inherently anisotropic, suffer from decreasing contrast with tissue depth, and characteristically have low signal levels. This thesis describes the initial work in segmenting and registering multiphoton fluorescent microscopy images via a combination of methods. In particular, it describes a method that utilizes image enhancement and spatial filtering along with registration (to correct translational motion) and temporal filtering. Experimental results indicate the methods are promising

Validation of the CAchexia SCOre (CASCO). Staging cancer patients: The use of miniCASCO as a simplified tool

    Get PDF
The CAchexia SCOre (CASCO) was described as a tool for the staging of cachectic cancer patients. The aim of this study is to show the metric properties of CASCO in order to classify cachectic cancer patients into three different groups, which are associated with a numerical scoring. The final aim was to clinically validate CASCO for its use in the classification of cachectic cancer patients in clinical practice. We carried out a case -control study that enrolled prospectively 186 cancer patients and 95 age-matched controls. The score includes five components: (1) body weight loss and composition, (2) inflammation/metabolic disturbances/immunosuppression, (3) physical performance, (4) anorexia, and (5) quality of life. The present study provides clinical validation for the use of the score. In order to show the metric properties of CASCO, three different groups of cachectic cancer patients were established according to the results obtained with the statistical approach used: mild cachexia (15 â\u89¤ Ã\u97 â\u89¤ 28), moderate cachexia (29 â\u89¤ Ã\u97 â\u89¤ 46), and severe cachexia (47 â\u89¤ Ã\u97 â\u89¤ 100). In addition, a simplified version of CASCO, MiniCASCO (MCASCO), was also presented and it contributes as a valid and easy-to-use tool for cachexia staging. Significant statistically correlations were found between CASCO and other validated indexes such as Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) and the subjective diagnosis of cachexia by specialized oncologists. A very significant estimated correlation between CASCO and MCASCO was found that suggests that MCASCO might constitute an easy and valid tool for the staging of the cachectic cancer patients. CASCO and MCASCO provide a new tool for the quantitative staging of cachectic cancer patients with a clear advantage over previous classifications

THE ANALYSIS OF THE NOVEL O OUTRO PÉ DA SEREIA FROM THE CONCEPT OF NARRATIVE TRANSCULTURATION THAT ÁNGEL RAMA DEVELOPED ALLOWS THE COMPARISON OF THE NARRATIVE OF THIS MOZAMBICAN WRITER WITH BRAZILIAN AND SPANISH AMERICAN NARRATIVES. THE ANALYSIS OF THE NOVEL DEVELOPS THE COMPARISON INTO THREE ASPECTS THAT, ACCORDING TO RAMA, ARE ESSENTIAL TO TALK ABOUT NARRATIVE TRANSCULTURATION: LANGUAGE, LITERARY STRUCTURE AND WORLD-VIEW.A ANALISE DO ROMANCE O OUTRO PÉ DA SEREIA APARTIR DO CONCEITO DE TRANSCULTURAÇÃO NARRATIVA QUE DESENVOLVEU ÁNGEL RAMA PERMITE FAZER A COMPARAÇÃO DA NARRATIVA DESTE ESCRITOR MOÇAMBICANO COM NARRATIVAS BRASILEIRAS E HISPANO-AMERICANAS. A ANALISE DO ROMANCE DESENVOLVE A COMPARAÇÃO NOS TRÊS ASPECTOS QUE, SEGUNDO RAMA, SÃO FUNDAMENTAIS PARA FALAR EM TRANSCULTURAÇÃO NARRATIVA: A LÍNGUA, A ESTRUTURAÇÃO LITERÁRIA E A COSMOVISÃO
