    Changes in Clinical Training for Nursing Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Scoping Review

This study aimed to map the literature on changes in clinical training for nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. (2) Methods: A scoping review was conducted according to JBI methodology’s latest guidance. A set of relevant electronic databases and grey literature was searched to report results published in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. (3) Results: A total of 12 studies were included in the study, addressing changes in clinical training in undergraduate nursing students due to COVID-19 pandemic activity, published between 2020 and 2022. (4) Conclusions: Nursing schools made an effort to replace traditional clinical training with several activities, primarily based on simulation or virtual activities. However, contact with others is essential, and simulation programs or scenarios cannot provide it.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Consideramos que estefoi um caso de aprendizagem imersiva com elevados níveis de imersão nos três eixos, destacando-se a imersão pelo sistema e pela agência.The activity "Education and Co-creation in the Metaverse in a Mixed Approach" was carried out as part of the IPV Inova e Inclui project, with the aim of developing a simulator in a virtual environment to represent the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu. To create this immersive space, transversal and multidisciplinary co-creation workshops were organised in collaborative and creative virtual environments. We propose a speculative analysis of the results of the teaching-learning processes of these workshops in the light of the three-dimensional understanding of immersion formulated by Morgado (2022), to understand where we can situate this case in terms of immersion by the system, immersion by the narrative, and immersion by the agency.     Valorisation of red beet waste: one-step extraction and separation of betalains and chlorophylls using thermoreversible aqueous biphasic systems

    Globally, up to 50% of root crops, fruits and vegetables produced is wasted. Beetroot stems and leaves fit into this scenario, with only a small fraction being used in cattle food. One way of approaching this problem is through their valorisation, by extracting and recovering valuable compounds present in this type of waste that could be used in other applications, while contributing towards a circular economy. In this work, a new integrated process using thermoreversible aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) composed of quaternary ammonium-based ionic liquids (ILs) and polypropyleneglycol 400 g mol−1 (PPG) is shown to allow the one-step extraction and separation of two pigment classes—betalains and chlorophylls—from red beet stems and leaves. The pigment extraction was carried out with a monophasic aqueous solution of the IL and PPG, whose phase separation was then achieved by a temperature switch, resulting in the simultaneous separation of chlorophylls and betalains into opposite phases. A central composite design was used to optimise the extraction parameters (time, temperature, and solid : liquid (S/L) ratio) of both pigment extraction yields, reaching at 20 °C, 70 min and a S/L ratio of 0.12 a maximum extraction yield of 6.67 wt% for betalains and 1.82 wt% for chlorophylls (per weight of biomass). Moreover, it is shown that aqueous solutions of ILs better stabilise betalains than the gold standard solvent used for the extraction method. Among the studied systems, the ABS comprising the IL N-ethyl-N-methyl-N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl) bromide ([N21(2OH)(2OH)]Br) presented the best separation performance, with an extraction efficiency of 92% and 95% for chlorophylls and betalains, respectively, for opposite phases. The pigments were removed from the respective phases using affinity resins, with high recoveries: 96% for betalains and 98% for chlorophylls, further allowing the IL reuse. Finally, the cyto- and ecotoxicities of the quaternary ammonium-based ILs were determined. The obtained results disclosed low to negligible toxicity in the thousands of mg L−1 range, with [N21(2OH)(2OH)]Br being harmless from an ecotoxicological point of view. Overall, it is shown here that the developed process is an innovative approach for the one-step extraction and selective separation of pigments contributing to the valorisation of waste biomass

    Fatty acids, IL6, and TNFα polymorphisms: an example of nutrigenetics in Crohn's disease

    Objectives - The aim of this work was to study the interaction between genetic polymorphisms (single-nucleotide polymorphisms, SNPs) of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and fat intake on the risk of developing Crohn's disease (CD) or modifying disease activity. Methods - Seven SNPs in interleukin 1 (IL1), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha), lymphotoxin alpha (LTalpha), and IL6 genes were analyzed in 116 controls and 99 patients with CD. The type of fat intake was evaluated, and the interaction between SNPs and dietary fat in modulating disease activity was analyzed. Results - Individuals who were homozygous for the IL6-174G/C polymorphism had a six-fold higher risk for CD (odds ratio (OR)=6.1; 95% confidence interval (95% CI)=1.9-19.4), whereas the TT genotype on the TNFalpha-857C/T polymorphism was associated with more active disease (OR=10.4; 95% CI=1.1-94.1). A high intake of total, saturated, and monounsaturated fats, as well as a higher ratio of n-6/n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), was associated with a more active phenotype (P<0.05). Furthermore, there was an interaction between dietary fat intake and SNPs, with a high intake of saturated and monounsaturated fats being associated with active disease, mainly in patients carrying the variant alleles of the 857 TNFalpha polymorphism (OR=6.0, 95% CI=1.4-26.2; OR=5.17; 95% CI=1.4-19.2, respectively) and the 174 IL6 polymorphism (OR=2.95; 95% CI=1.0-9.1; OR=3.21; 95% CI=1.0-10.4, respectively). Finally, low intake of n-3 PUFA and high n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio in patients with the TNFalpha 857 polymorphism were associated with higher disease activity (OR=3.6; 95% CI=1.0-13.0; OR=5.92; 95% CI=1.3-26.5, respectively). Conclusions - These results show that different types of fat may interact with cytokine genotype, modulating disease activity

    Flebite associada a cateter venoso periférico e a administração de medicamentos: análise retrospetiva de incidentes

    Background: Phlebitis is a complication associated with peripheral intravenous catheters and an adverse event. Objective: To analyze peripheral intravenous catheter-associated phlebitis incidents associated and drug administration to adult inpatients and their consequences. Methodology: Quantitative, retrospective, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. Non-probabilistic convenience sampling technique was used, with 96 adult patients hospitalized in 2019 selected in the area of medicine at a Hospital Center in Lisbon. The type of phlebitis incident was characterized using the Visual Infusion Phlebitis scale adapted and translated to European Portuguese. Patient harm was categorized according to the International Classification for Patient Safety (ICPS). Results: Of the documented phlebitis incidents, 78% obtained a score 2 on the VIP PT-PT scale. According to the ICPS, 87.5% resulted in mild harm and 12.5% in moderate harm. Antibiotics were the most frequent therapeutic group. Conclusion: Phlebitis has an impact on patient safety. The importance of nursing care is reinforced, with a focus on surveillance and early detection of phlebitis to prevent complications.Enquadramento: A flebite é uma complicação associada à utilização de cateter venoso periférico, classificada como evento adverso. Objetivos: Analisar os incidentes de flebite associada ao cateter venoso periférico e aos medicamentos administrados em doentes adultos internados e as suas consequências. Metodologia: Estudo quantitativo, retrospetivo, descritivo e transversal. Técnica de amostragem não probabilística por conveniência sendo selecionados 96 doentes adultos internados em 2019, na área da medicina de um Centro Hospitalar em Lisboa. O grau de flebite foi avaliado pela escala Visual Infusion Phlebitis Score Português Portugal (VIP PT-PT) traduzida e adaptada para Português Europeu. O dano foi categorizado de acordo com a classificação internacional sobre segurança do doente(CISD). Resultados: Dos incidentes de flebite documentados, 78% classificados com score 2 pela escala VIP PT-PT. Pela CISD, 87,5% resultaram em dano ligeiro e 12,5% em moderado. Os antibióticos foram o grupo terapêutico mais frequente. Conclusão: A flebite tem impacto na segurança do doente. Reforça-se a importância dos cuidados de enfermagem com enfoque na vigilância e deteção precoce de flebite.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Nursing knowledge on skin ulcer healing: a living scoping review protocol

    Objective: This review aims to continuously map the nursing knowledge on skin ulcer healing in any context of care. Introduction: Chronic wounds are an increasing concern for society and health care providers. Pressure ulcers and venous ulcers, among others, have devastating effects on morbidity and quality of life and require a systematic approach. The nursing process is an important method that allows a better organization and overall care quality for a systematic and continuous professional approach to nursing management of skin ulcers. The integration of this nursing knowledge in informatics systems creates an opportunity to embed decision-support models in clinical activity, promoting evidence-based practice. Inclusion criteria: This scoping review will consider articles on nursing data, diagnosis, interventions, and outcomes focused on people with skin ulcers in all contexts of care. This review will include quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods study designs as well as systematic reviews and dissertations. Methods: JBI’s scoping review guidance, as well as the Cochrane Collaboration’s guidance on living reviews, will be followed to meet the review’s objective. Screening of new literature will be performed regularly, with the review updated according to new findings. The search strategy will map published and unpublished studies. The databases to be searched include MEDLINE, CINAHL, Scopus, JBI Evidence Synthesis, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and PEDro. Searches for unpublished studies will include OpenGrey and Reposito´ rios Cientı´ficos de Acesso Aberto de Portugal.     Simultaneous Separation of Antioxidants and Carbohydrates From Food Wastes Using Aqueous Biphasic Systems Formed by Cholinium-Derived Ionic Liquids

COMPETE: PEst-C/SAU/UI0709/2011.The food industry produces significant amounts of waste, many of them rich in valuable compounds that could be recovered and reused in the framework of circular economy. The development of sustainable and cost-effective technologies to recover these value added compounds will contribute to a significant decrease of the environmental footprint and economic burden of this industry sector. Accordingly, in this work, aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) composed of cholinium-derived bistriflimide ionic liquids (ILs) and carbohydrates were investigated as an alternative process to simultaneously separate and recover antioxidants and carbohydrates from food waste. Aiming at improving the biocompatible character of the studied ILs and proposed process, cholinium-derived bistriflimide ILs were chosen, which were properly designed by playing with the cation alkyl side chain and the number of functional groups attached to the cation to be able to create ABS with carbohydrates. These ILs were characterized by cytotoxicity assays toward human intestinal epithelial cells (Caco-2 cell line), demonstrating to have a significantly lower toxicity than other well-known and commonly used fluorinated ILs. The capability of these ILs to form ABS with a series of carbohydrates, namely monosaccharides, disaccharides and polyols, was then appraised by the determination of the respective ternary liquid-liquid phase diagrams at 25 degrees C. The studied ABS were finally used to separate carbohydrates and antioxidants from real food waste samples, using an expired vanilla pudding as an example. With the studied systems, the separation of the two products occurs in one-step, where carbohydrates are enriched in the carbohydrate-rich phase and antioxidants are mainly present in the IL-rich phase. Extraction efficiencies of carbohydrates ranging between 89 and 92% to the carbohydrate-rich phase, and antioxidant relative activities ranging between 65 and 75% in the IL-rich phase were obtained. Furthermore, antioxidants from the IL-rich phase were recovered by solid-phase extraction, and the IL was recycled for two more times with no losses on the ABS separation performance. Overall, the obtained results show that the investigated ABS are promising platforms to simultaneously separate carbohydrates and antioxidants from real food waste samples, and could be used in further related applications foreseeing industrial food waste valorization.publishersversionpublishe
