The Chilean born artist who has lived in Australia for most of her life situated herself in Chilean society in 2015 and in 2013 found her lost Mapuche heritage. Finding a Mapuche inside was the artist’s constant search to find answers to the question ‘Am I Mapuche?’, leading her to ask others many times ‘Do you think I am Mapuche?’ With the use of four ceramic installations, the artist merges and manipulated the shapes of the Aegorhinus servillei insect into a human form to represent the prejudice attitudes existing in Chilean society towards the Mapuche and people with dark skin. The amalgamation of Australian and Chilean imagery in Xylography prints, and the use of insects from both countries, the artist was able to convey the displacement felt while living in Chile during the student exchange. The extensive explanation of Chilean colloquial language and the use of Spanish words in Chilean society, provide insight for English speakers and an understanding of the negative attitudes towards the Mapuche. The search found that Chilean society is discriminatory towards the Mapuche and towards people who have a similar physical characteristic of the Mapuche, and in particular people with brown skin, similar to the artist. Chilean idiomatic language and the use of words by Chileans was explained extensively, providing an insight into the discrimination that exists in Chilean society that is not understood by English speakers. There is vast evidence of the prejudice exerted onto people who do not look like the Western ideal and in particular the Mapuche

Pyramidal Fisher Motion for Multiview Gait Recognition

The goal of this paper is to identify individuals by analyzing their gait. Instead of using binary silhouettes as input data (as done in many previous works) we propose and evaluate the use of motion descriptors based on densely sampled short-term trajectories. We take advantage of state-of-the-art people detectors to define custom spatial configurations of the descriptors around the target person. Thus, obtaining a pyramidal representation of the gait motion. The local motion features (described by the Divergence-Curl-Shear descriptor) extracted on the different spatial areas of the person are combined into a single high-level gait descriptor by using the Fisher Vector encoding. The proposed approach, coined Pyramidal Fisher Motion, is experimentally validated on the recent `AVA Multiview Gait' dataset. The results show that this new approach achieves promising results in the problem of gait recognition.Comment: Submitted to International Conference on Pattern Recognition, ICPR, 201

Automatic learning of gait signatures for people identification

    Get PDF
This work targets people identification in video based on the way they walk (i.e. gait). While classical methods typically derive gait signatures from sequences of binary silhouettes, in this work we explore the use of convolutional neural networks (CNN) for learning high-level descriptors from low-level motion features (i.e. optical flow components). We carry out a thorough experimental evaluation of the proposed CNN architecture on the challenging TUM-GAID dataset. The experimental results indicate that using spatio-temporal cuboids of optical flow as input data for CNN allows to obtain state-of-the-art results on the gait task with an image resolution eight times lower than the previously reported results (i.e. 80x60 pixels).Comment: Proof of concept paper.

Supersymmetric variational energies of 3d confined potentials

Within the approach of Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics associated with the variational method a recipe to construct the superpotential of three dimensional confined potentials in general is proposed. To illustrate the construction, the energies of the Harmonic Oscillator and the Hulth\'en potential, both confined in three dimensions are evaluated. Comparison with the corresponding results of other approximative and exact numerical results is presented.Comment: 9 pages, Late

Design and Implementation of Super Wide Band Triple Band-Notched MIMO Antennas

In this article, a triple band-notched super-wideband (SWB) monopole antenna is designed and manufactured. The measured working frequency band (out of the filters working band) ranges from 2.5 to 20 GHz. A single radiating element is utilized to analyze and implement various MIMO antennas, with isolation between the antenna ports higher than 15 dB. Two parallel-fed elements SWB MIMO antenna and four parallel-fed elements SWB MIMO antennas are presented. Metallic barriers with different shapes are used to improve the isolation among ports from a low unacceptable value of 12 dB to a value higher than 20 dB within most of the working frequency band. S-parameters of the presented SWB MIMO antennas experimentally shows that antennas perform well up to 20 GHz, which is the highest frequency supported by the available Vector Network Analyzer used in the S parameters measurements. Satisfactory performance is observed up to 50 GHz by computer simulations using the CST softwar

Albendazole-induced granulomatous hepatitis: a case report

    Get PDF
INTRODUCTION: Drug-related hepatotoxicity is a common medical problem with implications for health systems. It constitutes a cause of acute liver failure and, in many cases, is responsible for the rejection of new pharmacological agents during efficacy and safety studies. Risk factors, as well as pathogenesis of drug-induced liver injury, are poorly understood. The diagnosis of drug-induced liver injury is challenging; it is difficult to define the cause of drug hepatotoxicity due to the heterogeneity of the clinical presentation and the absence of established criteria for accurate and reproducible identification of drug-associated liver toxicity. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 25-year-old Hispanic woman admitted to our Clinical Hepatology Unit with symptoms of acute hepatitis of unknown etiology. She was diagnosed with albendazole-induced granulomatous hepatitis after ruling out other possible causes, based on laboratory studies, liver biopsy, medical history, detailed drug history, and spontaneous improvement of her liver biochemical profile after medication withdrawal. This diagnosis was supported by the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences-Roussel Uclaf Causality Assessment Method, which showed a likely correlation between hepatocellular damage and drug toxicity as the etiology. CONCLUSIONS: Our patient’s suspected diagnosis was albendazole-induced granulomatous hepatitis with confirmatory histologic pattern. This case deserves particular attention due to the wide use of albendazole in our country (Colombia) and the prevalent medical issue of drug-related hepatotoxicity

EPR investigation of direct oxyradical scavenging and metal chelation activities of chitosan as an alternative to sulfites in enology

    Get PDF
Exposure to dissolved oxygen during the winemaking process adversely affects the sensory properties of wines such as loss of colour, aromatic defects and increase of astringency. For decades the management of juice browning in enology has been managed by adding sulphur dioxide as a powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial agent. However, since sulfites are growingly rejected by consumers because of their chemical nature and known allergenic properties, developing biologically relevant alternatives is an expanding field in enology. Recently chitosan, an abundant biopolymer obtained by deacetylation of chitin from animal or vegetal sources, has been recommended as alternative fining agent in wines, showing antimicrobial, biodegradable and non-allergenic properties. Chitin derivatives also demonstrated metal chelating effects (which slower oxidation in wines), interacting with grape polyphenols such as caftaric acid (whose enzymatic oxidation results in excessive browning [1]), and inhibiting (+)-catechin oxidation in model white wines [2]. Using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques involving nitrones spin traps and standard oxyradical generating systems, this study presents for the first time complementary facets of the antioxidant action of chitosan, including direct scavenging of hydroxyl radical (a highly oxidizing species formed during wine oxidation) and chelation of metals (iron and copper). Experiments were conducted in aqueous medium, wine matrix, and commercial white wines, and different chitosans were tested at concentrations (0.1\uf02d2 g/L) allowed by enology regulations. Altogether, EPR data support the preferential use of chitosan as a reliable alternative for the reduction of sulphur dioxide to maintain wine freshness

Ponència presentada en la 19th International Conference on Informatics in Control, Automation and Robotics. 14-16 de juliol de 2022, Lisboa, Portugal. In this paper a complete robotic solution is presented, which allows the teleoperation of the radiation survey in the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator at CERN. Firstly, an introduction to radiation protection is given. Subsequently, the execution of the radiation survey in person is described and the potential of robotic solutions for such missions is outlined. After providing a brief state of the art on the subject, the development of the robot base, as well as its component selection and design is shown. Hereafter, the software implementation is explained. The test procedure of this project includes the most important requirements for a correct execution of the survey, as well as the operational steps and data treatment in detail. The results underline the correct execution of the mission, and show the advantages of the teleoperated robotic solution, such as the improved and unified measurement conditions. Thus, this robotic system will allow to significantly reduce the radiation dose of the radiation protection staff. For further development, the automation of this task is planned, which presupposes the gradual autonomization of the robotic system from assisting the user to the self-reliant execution of the survey
