Effects of climate on wood formation of Quercus robur L. and Quercus pyrenaica Willd. along a mediterraneity gradient in Galicia: an Integrated analysis using phenology, anatomy, and dendroecology

    Get PDF
This Thesis is focused on the study of seasonal dynamics of wood formation and non-structural carbohydrates, as well as on the climatic information contained in tree-ring series, in two ring-porous species with contrasting ecological strategies (Q. robur L. and Q. pyrenaica Willd.) along a water-availability gradient in Galicia. This integrative approach allows us to yield a detailed portrayal of the processes controlling wood formation, and their consequences on tree hydraulic functionality and the carbon balance. This research is particularly concerned about the environmental control of growth, whereby the obtained information is used to ascertain the responses of deciduous oaks to the ongoing environmental change

A biometric and ecologic comparison between Artemia from Mexico and Chile

BACKGROUND: A preliminary biometric and ecologic database for the brine shrimp Artemia from Mexico and Chile is presented. The area abounds in small and seasonal ponds and large inland lakes, the latter mainly located in Mexico, although relatively large and isolated lakes are found in complex hydrological settings in pre-high plateau areas of Chile. This paper summarizes research efforts aimed at the localization, characterization, and evaluation of the aquaculture potential of Artemia populations in Mexico and Chile, which exhibit great habitat diversity (ponds, salterns, coastal lagoons, sea arms, coastal and inland lakes), contrasting weather conditions and different levels of isolation and human intervention. RESULTS: This study covered locations between 29° north latitude (Baja California, Mexico) to 50° south latitude (Puerto Natales, Chile). Biological characteristics considered are species name, reproductive mode, cyst diameter, chorion thickness, and nauplius length, whereas ecological data include pond size, pH, salinity, temperature, and water ionic composition. Artemia franciscana is the only species found in Mexico, it exists together with A. persimilis in Chile, though separated geographically. Ecological differences in habitat exist between both regions but also within countries, a pattern particularly clear with regard to water composition. Surprisingly, a Mexican (Cuatro Ciénegas, A. franciscana) and a Chilean location (Torres del Paine, A. persimilis) share habitat characteristics, at least for the period when data were collected. The discriminat analysis for cyst diameter and nauplius length shows that Artemia from only one location match in cyst diameter with those from San Francisco Bay (SFB) (Point Lobos), and one (Marquez) is far apart from SFB and all the others. The Chilean locations (Pampilla, Cejar, Cahuil, Llamara, Yape) share cyst diameter, but tend to differ from SFB. The remaining Mexican locations (Juchitan, Ohuira, Yavaros) are well separated from all the others. With regard to nauplii length, populations tend to distribute in a relatively random manner, being Marquez the location differing the most in cyst diameter from SFB. CONCLUSION: This database will contribute to the knowledge of radiation centers and serves as a baseline for further biogeographic studies, population characterization, management, and monitoring of Artemia biodiversity. Likewise, the impact of colonization and translocations for aquaculture purposes can be better assessed with a baseline for reference. Mexico and Chile exemplify the need to increase and further integrate regional information to tackle fundamental problems underlying practical utilization of Artemia

Applying A Methodology For Educating Students With Special Needs: A Case Study

    Get PDF
The introduction of innovative educational technologies opens up new ways of interacting with students. We propose to exploit this potential to help in the education of children with special needs. We analyze the state of the art of tools supporting the teaching process, focusing on the omissions of existing research. We propose a new framework to help throughout the whole teaching process and describe its application to Proyecto Aprender (Learn Project), an educational resource targeting children with learning difficulties. Finally, we outline some conclusions and current/future research lines

The Endoplasmic Reticulum Glucosyltransferase Recognizes Nearly Native Glycoprotein Folding Intermediates

The UDP-Glc:glycoprotein glucosyltransferase (GT), a key player in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) quality control of glycoprotein folding, only glucosylates glycoproteins displaying non-native conformations. To determine whether GT recognizes folding intermediates or irreparably misfolded species with nearly native structures, we generated and tested as GT substrates neoglycoprotein fragments derived from chymotrypsin inhibitor 2 (GCI2) bearing from 53 to 64 (full-length) amino acids. Fragment conformations mimicked the last stage-folding structures adopted by a glycoprotein entering the ER lumen. GT catalytic efficiency (V(max)/K(m)) remained constant from GCI2-(1-53) to GCI2-(1-58) and then steadily declined to reach a minimal value with GCI2-(1-64). The same parameter showed a direct hyperbolic relationship with solvent accessibility of the single Trp residue but only in fragments exposing hydrophobic amino acid patches. Mutations introduced (GCI2-(1-63)V63S and GCI2-(1-64)V63S) produced slight structural destabilizations but increased GT catalytic efficiency. This parameter presented an inverse exponential relationship with the free energy of unfolding of canonical and mutant fragments. Moreover, the catalytic efficiency showed a linear relationship with the fraction of unfolded species in water. It was concluded that the GT-derived quality control may be operative with nearly native conformers and that no alternative ER-retaining mechanisms are required when glycoproteins approach their proper folding.Fil: Caramelo, Julio Javier. This paper seeks to optimize the weight-effort ratio, ie reduce weight while maintaining or increasing in the best effort that can withstand spur and helical gears. All this with the help of computational mechanics and simulation, computational tools with these highly reliable results without the need to manufacture or perform mechanical tests on the parts that not only would take a long time, but also greatly elevate the costs. the contribution of this study lies in achieving savings of material without adversely affect the mechanical properties of the workpiece, increasing the efficiency of the machines in which they are used

Sentido y otro (autrui) en Deleuze

    Get PDF
