    In the 1890\u27s, the Westcotts lived at 826 James Street, Syracuse. The man of the house was an occasional clerk, banker, and stock broker who worked for the Syracuse Water Commission. When he died, the obituary writer of a Syracuse newspaper described Edward Noyes Westcott as a clerk, and added, Mr Westcott was facile with a pen but never indulged himself in writing to any great extent. Today, few of us recognize the name Edward Noyes Westcott, although we probably know the book he wrote, David Harum, A Story of American Life, which is, by almost any standard, fairly called an American classic.     Web 2.0 Technologies in the Classroom

    Today\u27s students make frequent use of Web 2.0 tools in their lives. Facebook and MySpace are used for social networking, Flickr and YouTube are used for sharing pictures and videos, and IM and text messaging are used for staying in touch with family and friends. Yet we live in a time when student interest in IT careers has significantly declined. University students often don\u27t see the connection between the software they use on a day-to-day basis, and a meaningful career in IT. This panel will present four approaches to applying Web 2.0 technologies in the classroom. Following a brief technology overview, Google Docs and Wikis will be presented as a means to facilitate student and faculty collaboration in the learning process. Panelists will also discuss the application of the virtual world Second Life, radical decentralization technologies (e.g. BitTorrent, del.icio.us, and Flickr), and social networking sites Facebook and LinkedIn

    Linear dynamics of weakly viscous accretion disks: A disk analog of Tollmien-Schlichting waves

    This paper discusses new perspectives and approaches to the problem of disk dynamics where, in this study, we focus on the effects of viscous instabilities influenced by boundary effects. The Boussinesq approximation of the viscous large shearing box equations is analyzed in which the azimuthal length scale of the disturbance is much larger than the radial and vertical scales. We examine the stability of a non-axisymmetric potential vorticity mode, i.e. a PV-anomaly. in a configuration in which buoyant convection and the strato-rotational instability do not to operate. We consider a series of boundary conditions which show the PV-anomaly to be unstable both on a finite and semi-infinite radial domains. We find these conditions leading to an instability which is the disk analog of Tollmien-Schlichting waves. When the viscosity is weak, evidence of the instability is most pronounced by the emergence of a vortex sheet at the critical layer located away from the boundary where the instability is generated. For some boundary conditions a necessary criterion for the onset of instability for vertical wavelengths that are a sizable fraction of the layer's thickness and when the viscosity is small is that the appropriate Froude number of the flow be greater than one. This instability persists if more realistic boundary conditions are applied, although the criterion on the Froude number is more complicated. The unstable waves studied here share qualitative features to the instability seen in rotating Blasius boundary layers. The implications of these results are discussed.     The correlation between reading and mathematics ability at age twelve has a substantial genetic component

    Dissecting how genetic and environmental influences impact on learning is helpful for maximizing numeracy and literacy. Here we show, using twin and genome-wide analysis, that there is a substantial genetic component to children’s ability in reading and mathematics, and estimate that around one half of the observed correlation in these traits is due to shared genetic effects (so-called Generalist Genes). Thus, our results highlight the potential role of the learning environment in contributing to differences in a child’s cognitive abilities at age twelve

    The Reproducibility of a Kinematically-Derived Axis of the Knee versus Digitized Anatomical Landmarks using a Knee Navigation System

    Component position is critical to longevity of knee arthroplasties. Femoral component rotation is typically referenced from the transepicondylar axis (TEA), the anterior-posterior (AP) axis or the posterior condylar axis. Other studies have shown high variability in locating the TEA while proposing digitization of other landmarks such as the AP axis as a less-variable reference. This study uses a navigation system to compare the reproducibility of computing a kinematically-derived, navigated knee axis (NKA) to digitizing the TEA and AP axis. Twelve knees from unembalmed cadavers were tested. Four arthroplasty surgeons digitized the femoral epicondyles and the AP axis direction as well as flexed and extended the knee repeatedly to allow for NKA determination. The variance of the NKA axis determined under neutral loading conditions was smaller than the variance of the TEA axis when the kinematics were measured in the closed surgical condition (P<0.001). However, varus, valgus, and internal loading of the leg increased the variability of the NKA. Distraction of the leg during knee flexion and extension preserved the low variability of the NKA. In conclusion, a kinematically-derived NKA under neutral or distraction loading is more reproducible than the TEA and AP axis determined by digitization

    Intelligent OS X malware threat detection with code inspection

    With the increasing market share of Mac OS X operating system, there is a corresponding increase in the number of malicious programs (malware) designed to exploit vulnerabilities on Mac OS X platforms. However, existing manual and heuristic OS X malware detection techniques are not capable of coping with such a high rate of malware. While machine learning techniques offer promising results in automated detection of Windows and Android malware, there have been limited efforts in extending them to OS X malware detection. In this paper, we propose a supervised machine learning model. The model applies kernel base Support Vector Machine (SVM) and a novel weighting measure based on application library calls to detect OS X malware. For training and evaluating the model, a dataset with a combination of 152 malware and 450 benign were is created. Using common supervised Machine Learning algorithm on the dataset, we obtain over 91% detection accuracy with 3.9% false alarm rate. We also utilize Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) to create three synthetic datasets with different distributions based on the refined version of collected dataset to investigate impact of different sample sizes on accuracy of malware detection. Using SMOTE datasets we could achieve over 96% detection accuracy and false alarm of less than 4%. All malware classification experiments are tested using cross validation technique. Our results reflect that increasing sample size in synthetic datasets has direct positive effect on detection accuracy while increases false alarm rate in compare to the original dataset
