    Effectiveness of XP-endo finisher in the reduction of bacterial load in oval-shaped root canals

    This study investigated the effectiveness of XP-Endo Finisher (XPF) associated with XP-Endo Shaper (XPS) or Reciproc Blue (RB) files in reducing bacterial load in oval-shaped root canals (RC) during chemomechanical preparation (CMP) using 0.9% saline solution (NaCl) or 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). Eighty mandibular incisors with single oval-shaped RC were contaminated with Enterococcus faecalis. The teeth were randomly assigned to eight experimental groups (n = 10) according to the CMP, as follows: G1: XPS, G2: XPS + XPF, G3: RB, and G4: RB + XPF. CMP was performed with NaCl or NaOCl. The reduction of bacterial load was assessed by colony-forming unit count before (S1) and after (S2) CMP. Data normality was verified by using Shapiro-Wilk test. ANOVA, Tukey's test, and Bonferroni post-hoc test were used at a 5% significance level. Culturable bacteria were present in all S1 samples (p>0.05). All instrumentation techniques were effective in reducing bacterial load, irrespective of the irrigating solution (p < 0.05). With the use of NaCl, RB was more effective than XPS (p = 0.035). With the use of NaOCl, XPS and RB presented similar effectiveness (p = 0.779). XPF enhanced the bacterial reduction of both systems tested (p < 0.05). The use of NaOCl improved the CMP, irrespective of the instrumentation technique used (p < 0.05). In conclusion, XPS and RB files are effective in reducing bacterial levels in oval-shaped RC. The use of XPF as a method of agitation of the irrigating solution improved the cleaning efficiency of both file systems tested.     Invariant Natural Killer T-cells and their subtypes may play a role in the pathogenesis of endometriosis

    Objective: To evaluate the frequencies of iNKT cells and their subsets in patients with deep endometriosis. Methods: A case-control study was conducted between&nbsp;2013 and&nbsp;2015, with&nbsp;73&nbsp;patients distributed into two groups: 47&nbsp;women with a histological diagnosis of endometriosis and&nbsp;26&nbsp;controls. Peripheral blood, endometriosis lesions, and healthy peritoneal samples were collected on the day of surgery to determine the frequencies of iNKT cells and subtypes via flow cytometry analysis. Results: The authors observed a lower number of iNKT (p&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.01) and Double-Negative (DN) iNKT cells (p&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.02) in the blood of patients with endometriosis than in the control group. The number of DN iNKT IL-17+ cells in the secretory phase was lower in the endometriosis group (p&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.049). There was an increase in the secretion of IL-17 by CD4+ iNKT cells in the blood of patients with endometriosis and severe dysmenorrhea (p&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.038), and severe acyclic pelvic pain (p&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.048). Patients with severe dysmenorrhea also had a decreased number of CD4+ CCR7+ cells (p&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.022). Conclusion: The decreased number of total iNKT and DN iNKT cells in patients with endometriosis suggests that iNKT cells play a role in the pathogenesis of endometriosis and can be used to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic agents

    Chaotic Diffusion on Periodic Orbits: The Perturbed Arnol'd Cat Map

    Chaotic diffusion on periodic orbits (POs) is studied for the perturbed Arnol'd cat map on a cylinder, in a range of perturbation parameters corresponding to an extended structural-stability regime of the system on the torus. The diffusion coefficient is calculated using the following PO formulas: (a) The curvature expansion of the Ruelle zeta function. (b) The average of the PO winding-number squared, w2w^{2}, weighted by a stability factor. (c) The uniform (nonweighted) average of w2w^{2}. The results from formulas (a) and (b) agree very well with those obtained by standard methods, for all the perturbation parameters considered. Formula (c) gives reasonably accurate results for sufficiently small parameters corresponding also to cases of a considerably nonuniform hyperbolicity. This is due to {\em uniformity sum rules} satisfied by the PO Lyapunov eigenvalues at {\em fixed} ww.     The capabilities of bioanalytical mass spectrometry to (i) detect and differentiate viruses at the peptide level whilst maintaining high sample throughput and (ii) to provide diagnosis and prognosis for infected patients are presented as a tutorial in this work to aid analytical chemists and physicians to gain insights into the possibilities offered by current high-resolution mass spectrometry technology and bioinformatics.     First hexagonal close packed high-entropy alloy with outstanding stability under extreme conditions and electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation

    High-entropy alloys containing 5 and 6 platinum group metals have been prepared by thermal decomposition of single-source precursors non requiring high temperature or mechanical alloying. The prepared Ir0.19Os0.22Re0.21Rh0.20Ru0.19 alloy is the first example of a single-phase hexagonal high-entropy alloy. Heat treatment up to 1500 K and compression up to 45 GPa do not result in phase changes, a record temperature and pressure stability for a single-phase high-entropy alloy. The alloys show pronounced electrocatalytic activity in methanol oxidation, which opens a route for the use of high-entropy alloys as materials for sustainable energy conversion
