Uniqueness and non-uniqueness of static vacuum black holes in higher dimensions
We prove the uniqueness theorem for asymptotically flat static vacuum black
hole solutions in higher dimensional space-times. We also construct infinitely
many non-asymptotically flat regular static black holes on the same spacetime

Gram-Negative Bacterial Infection in Thigh Abscess Can Migrate to Distant Burn Depending on Burn Depth
Sepsis remains the major cause of death in patients with major burn injuries. In the present investigation we evaluated the interaction between burn injuries of varying severity and preexisting distant infection. We used Gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus mirabilis) that were genetically engineered to be bioluminescent, which allowed for noninvasive, sequential optical imaging of the extent and severity of the infection. The bioluminescent bacteria migrated from subcutaneous abscesses in the leg to distant burn wounds on the back depending on the severity of the burn injury, and this migration led to increased mortality of the mice. Treatment with ciprofloxacin, injected either in the leg with the bacterial infection or into the burn eschar, prevented this colonization of the wound and decreased mortality. The present data suggest that burn wounds can readily become colonized by infections distant from the wound itself

The Extreme Kerr Throat Geometry: A Vacuum Analog of AdS_2 x S^2
We study the near horizon limit of a four dimensional extreme rotating black
hole. The limiting metric is a completely nonsingular vacuum solution, with an
enhanced symmetry group SL(2,R) x U(1). We show that many of the properties of
this solution are similar to the AdS_2 x S^2 geometry arising in the near
horizon limit of extreme charged black holes. In particular, the boundary at
infinity is a timelike surface. This suggests the possibility of a dual quantum
mechanical description. A five dimensional generalization is also discussed.Comment: 21 page
LHS6343C: A Transiting Field Brown Dwarf Discovered by the Kepler Mission
We report the discovery of a brown dwarf that transits one member of the M+M
binary system LHS6343AB every 12.71 days. The transits were discovered using
photometric data from the Kelper public data release. The LHS6343 stellar
system was previously identified as a single high-proper-motion M dwarf. We use
high-contrast imaging to resolve the system into two low-mass stars with masses
0.45 Msun and 0.36 Msun, respectively, and a projected separation of 55 arcsec.
High-resolution spectroscopy shows that the more massive component undergoes
Doppler variations consistent with Keplerian motion, with a period equal to the
transit period and an amplitude consistent with a companion mass of M_C = 62.8
+/- 2.3 Mjup. Based on an analysis of the Kepler light curve we estimate the
radius of the companion to be R_C = 0.832 +/- 0.021 Rjup, which is consistent
with theoretical predictions of the radius of a > 1 Gyr brown dwarf.Comment: Our previous analysis neglected the dependence of the scaled
semimajor axis, a/R, on the transit depth. By not correcting a/R for the
third-light contamination, we overestimated the mass of Star A, which led to
an overestimate the mass and radius of the LHS6343
A Geologic Study to Determine the Potential to Create an Appalachian Storage Hub for Natural Gas Liquids
The Marcellus and Utica shale plays continue to lead the way in an ever-expanding shale revolution with average daily production, growing from about 3 billion cubic feet (BCF) in 2010 to more than 24 BCF today. Forecasts suggest that this could grow to as much as 40 BCF in the next 5 years. Fortunately, sweet spots in the Utica in eastern Ohio and in the Marcellus in northern West Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania are areas of wet gas production, downdip from oil production and updip from dry gas. Production in these regions represents about 40 percent of the total from the Marcellus and Utica shales and is expected to represent a disproportionate share of future production growth. Because of the amount of natural gas liquids (NGLs) contained in this production, development of these shale plays has the potential to have a large impact on the petrochemical industry

Effect of Gene Therapy on Visual Function in Leber's Congenital Amaurosis
Early-onset, severe retinal dystrophy caused by mutations in the gene encoding retinal pigment epithelium–specific 65-kD protein (RPE65) is associated with poor vision at birth and complete loss of vision in early adulthood. We administered to three young adult patients subretinal injections of recombinant adeno-associated virus vector 2/2 expressing RPE65 complementary DNA (cDNA) under the control of a human RPE65 promoter. There were no serious adverse events. There was no clinically significant change in visual acuity or in peripheral visual fields on Goldmann perimetry in any of the three patients. We detected no change in retinal responses on electroretinography. One patient had significant improvement in visual function on microperimetry and on dark-adapted perimetry. This patient also showed improvement in a subjective test of visual mobility. These findings provide support for further clinical studies of this experimental approach in other patients with mutant RPE65.
