Mechanisms Of Head Injuries In Road Traffic Accidents; A Potential Solution For Data Collection

Despite advances in road safety, head injuries still account for many of the most serious and fatal injuries in road traffic accidents. This PhD thesis provides a summary of knowledge regarding the current position in head injury research with regard to: Previous assertions as to head injury mechanisms Existing head injury criteria The availability of data to explore potential confounding factors in predicting head injury risk and to propose or validate a new injury criterion or criteria. On the basis of the existing information the question was posed, whether it is possible to validate advanced head injury criteria and head models using additional (new) head injury case data so as to make their application more robust in efforts to mitigate future injuries. In order to answer this question, priority was given to the pursuit of new data, offering six degree of freedom time-series data with detailed information on the exact injuries sustained. A working in-ear sensor system was deemed to offer a potential solution in obtaining elusive data regarding the kind of impact events that could cause head injuries for road users. An in-ear accelerometer system used by the FIA Institute was evaluated through experimentation. Then a low-cost solution was developed with the aim to give similar sensor performance for a wider market of potential wearers. The prototype low-cost sensor system was evaluated in a small series of drop tests and also in a very small real-world data collection trial. This evaluation identified a series of issues that need to be resolved before the system can be used to generate valuable data. A viable system is not ready immediately, but could be following modifications to the prototype system evaluated. Taking this revised system, the next step would be to initiate a larger trial to start the collection of high fidelity data and impact event details; in order to address the need for such information and confirm that even the low-cost system would be fit for that purpose

New Technology and the Right to Privacy: Do E-Scooters Implicate the Fourth Amendment?

The Fourth Amendment protects individual’s right to privacy from unwarranted searches and seizures, but the analysis for when the Fourth Amendment applies has become more complicated as new technology is developed. E-scooters are a new piece of technology which may implicate the Fourth Amendment. Cities across the country are beginning to require the mobility companies which provide e-scooter services to turn over location data in order to receive an operating permit. This article first provides a background of the Fourth Amendment, then provides details regarding the new city regulations. The article includes a discussion of the privacy concerns as well as the potential benefits of the regulations. This article then argues that the new regulations create Fourth Amendment issues which must be addressed going forward

“Scholarship is a Conversation”: Discourse, Attribution, and Twitter’s Role in Information Literacy Instruction

When addressing scholarly attribution, citation, and plagiarism in one-shot instruction sessions, librarians often fail to present these issues in a manner that has relevance for students. Librarians often focus on intellectual honesty and the potential ramifications of plagiarism, both individual pursuits, rather than explaining that by creating an academic work, students are participating in academic discourse. Within Pluralizing Plagiarism, Anson argues that scholarly attribution instruction that emphasizes “policy, detection, and punishment” is antithetical to the mission of institutions of higher learning – the education of students (Anson, 2008). One of the major deficiencies of this compliance-based instruction is that it presents students with a false dichotomy that does not align with their authentic life experiences; plagiarism is demonstrated as a black and white issue, rather than existing in shades of gray. Students who have come of age within a twenty-first century information ecosystem rife with remix and parody culture will likely find teaching that presents the re-use of source material as a non-nuanced issue unconvincing. Because students respond positively to instruction that aligns with their authentic experiences, this suggests that librarians need to develop new methods for teaching attribution and scholarly discourse that not only recognize the nuance inherent to these topics, but also presents these concepts within a familiar framework (Klipfel, 2014). As a familiar platform for social interaction with multiple avenues for giving credit and a shorter timescale, Twitter presents an opportunity to place attribution, plagiarism, and integrity into a humanizing, real world context that models how discourse unfolds in an authentic manner for learners. By embedding attribution instruction into a meaningful context, librarians and other educators can make substantial and much needed improvements to traditional compliance-based instruction, which is often built upon the slow, rigid, and unfamiliar patterns of how to cite scholarly works

Landing your first academic job: a cohort study of recent graduates from the UNC at Chapel Hill’s School of Information and Library Science

The academic job market for entry level librarians remains highly competitive, and students should begin preparing themselves for the job market from the moment they are accepted into an LIS program. Lag time in selecting applicants for academic positions remains high, so students should begin the process of applying for positions well in advance of their anticipated graduation date. To prepare for this competitive job market, LIS students should expect to dedicate a significant amount of time engaging with the profession outside of the classroom, including paid LIS-related work, for-credit practicums, scholarly creativity, attending conferences, and becoming involved with professional organizations. For LIS students that supplement coursework with these activities, academic librarianship remains a viable path of employment for entry level candidates. However, job placement can remain difficult for candidates interested in very specific positions or in limited geographic areas, even for well qualified LIS graduates

Lift and moment equations for oscillating airfoils in an infinite unstaggered cascade

Aerodynamic coefficients similar to those of the isolated airfoil are obtained as functions of the cascade geometry and the phasing between successive blades; the phasings considered are zero, 90 degrees, and 180 degrees. These aerodynamic coefficients are plotted for the special case when all the airfoils are vibrating in bending in phase (360 degree phasing). It is shown that the effect of cascading for this case is to reduce greatly the aerodynamic damping. (author

As we envisioned this session, our panel would discuss what brought them together, why they felt the ·need to organize; what they envisioned for SGA as a professional organization; how did they view its development; how they have viewed its development over the last few years; and what they would like to see for its future. Then, we thought that following some discussion about our beginning, it would be a very valuable exercise for those of us here to have a forum to explore development for SGA and what we, as a group, would like to have come from our organization

STEM Abstracting and Indexing (A&I) Tool Overlap Analysis in 2020: An Open Science Informed Approach Amid Pandemic Budgets

Objectives: Compare journal coverage of abstract and indexing tools commonly used within academic science and engineering research. Methods: Title lists of Compendex, Inspec, Reaxys, SciFinder, and Web of Science were provided by their respective publishers. These lists were imported into Excel and the overlap of the ISSN/EISSNs and journal titles was determined using the VLOOKUP command, which determines if the value in one cell can be found in a column of other cells. Results: There is substantial overlap between the Web of Science’s Science Citation Index Expanded and the Emerging Sources Citation Index, the largest database with 17,014 titles, and Compendex (63.6%), Inspec (71.0%), Reaxys (67.0%), and SciFinder (75.8%). SciFinder also overlaps heavily with Reaxys (75.9%). Web of Science and Compendex combined contain 77.6% of the titles within Inspec. Conclusion: Flat or decreasing library budgets combined with increasing journal prices result in an unsustainable system that will require a calculated allocation of resources at many institutions. The overlap of commonly indexed journals among abstracting and indexing tools could serve as one way to determine how these resources should be allocated

Neutral pion decay into ννˉ\nu\bar{\nu} in dense skyrmion matter

We study the weak decay of the neutral pion to a neutrino-antineutrino pair, $\pi^0\to \nu \bar{\nu}$, in the Skyrme model. The effect of allowing motorists to opt out of tort law in the United States

Dans le domaine des accidents d'automobile, le droit commun et les législations spéciales font souvent l'objet de critiques aux États-Unis. Une proposition présentement à l'étude permettrait aux automobilistes d'obvier à ces critiques en choisissant le système d'indemnisation qui leur serait applicable. Des projections actuarielles font état d'économies substantielles pour les automobilistes. Ces économies sont cependant en diminution depuis quelques années puisque les montants minimaux obligatoires d'assurance automobile n'ont pas suivi le taux d'inflation. Il en résulte que de plus en plus d'automobilistes, sous le droit commun, se contentent d'une réclamation pour leurs pertes de nature économique.As applied to U.S. traffic accidents, both tort law and no-fault law are often attacked. A proposed solution would allow motorists to choose an option bypassing the inadequacies of both tort law and current U.S. no-fault laws. Actuarial estimates indicate large savings available to motorists so choosing. But as time goes on, the savings are diminished as low required limits of coverage in the U.S. meet inflation, leading not only to admittedly lessened savings but also to the anomaly of more and more motorists in non no-fault states pursuing tort rights for only economic losses
