Physical literacy is a fundamental human capacity, indispensable for the way in which human beings create and lead their lives, and an essential factor in quality of life, and that childhood and adolescence are critical periods for an effective promotion of physical literacy. Thus, the defense will be made that Physical Education must be understood as a project of innovation and cultural transformation, that aims to form a physically literate person, aware of their rights and duties, giving all children and adolescents the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and develop the attitudes and skills necessary for an emancipated, satisfactory and prolonged participation in the culture of movement throughout life, in a democratic society. First, we will try to clarify what is meant by physical literacy and then we will describe the role that physical education should play in the development of physical literacy, describing the topics to be considered by a teaching methodology capable of promoting motivation, knowledge, confidence and motor skills, that is, the attributes necessary for the practice of physical activity and sport throughout life.

This study aimed to characterize adolescents' physical activity according to parental physical activity participation, in families where one or both of the parents were active or inactive. A total of 1037 adolescents aged 12-18 years, 1037 fathers and 1037 mothers participated in the study. Questionnaires were used to assess child and parents physical activity. Cluster analysis was used for data processing. Adolescents from families where both parents were inactive were characterized by physical inactivity. Adolescents of active parents practiced physical activity in several contexts. Adolescents with an active father and an inactive mother were characterized by the practice of unorganized physical activity. Finally, adolescents from active mothers and inactive fathers were characterized by the practice of organized physical activity. Two active parents enhance the potential influence on the child's adoption of physical activity as a spontaneous behaviour in leisure-time. Having one active parent (active role model) is better than two less active or sedentary parents
