Pose Induction for Novel Object Categories
We address the task of predicting pose for objects of unannotated object
categories from a small seed set of annotated object classes. We present a
generalized classifier that can reliably induce pose given a single instance of
a novel category. In case of availability of a large collection of novel
instances, our approach then jointly reasons over all instances to improve the
initial estimates. We empirically validate the various components of our
algorithm and quantitatively show that our method produces reliable pose
estimates. We also show qualitative results on a diverse set of classes and
further demonstrate the applicability of our system for learning shape models
of novel object classes
The Visual Centrifuge: Model-Free Layered Video Representations
True video understanding requires making sense of non-lambertian scenes where
the color of light arriving at the camera sensor encodes information about not
just the last object it collided with, but about multiple mediums -- colored
windows, dirty mirrors, smoke or rain. Layered video representations have the
potential of accurately modelling realistic scenes but have so far required
stringent assumptions on motion, lighting and shape. Here we propose a
learning-based approach for multi-layered video representation: we introduce
novel uncertainty-capturing 3D convolutional architectures and train them to
separate blended videos. We show that these models then generalize to single
videos, where they exhibit interesting abilities: color constancy, factoring
out shadows and separating reflections. We present quantitative and qualitative
results on real world videos.Comment: Appears in: 2019 IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern

the paper (although we have included larger figures) as well as an appendix
detailing the model architectur

Algebraic thinking of grade 8 students in solving word problems with a spreadsheet
This paper describes and discusses the activity of grade 8 students on two word
problems, using a spreadsheet. We look at particular uses of the spreadsheet, namely
at the students’ representations, as ways of eliciting forms of algebraic thinking
involved in solving the problems. We aim to see how the spreadsheet allows the solution of formally impracticable problems at students’ level of algebra knowledge,
by making them treatable through the computational logic that is intrinsic to the
operating modes of the spreadsheet. The protocols of the problem solving sessions
provided ways to describe and interpret the relationships that students established
between the variables in the problems and their representations in the spreadsheet

The impact of family-friendly policies on companies´ performance in Portugal
The last twenty years have been engraved by significant changes in the world of work and family. Adding to this, a more competitive job market associated with an increasing of working hours and an almost permanently contact with the workplace, have increased the attention on family-friendly policies, with the purpose to achieve work-life balance as well to improve company performance consequently. Due to the huge potential that these policies can exercise in all the extension of an employee´s life, that can in turn, affect the company performance, it is pivotal for academic, management and policy level to study how family-friendly policies affect company performance. Using a sample of Portuguese public limited companies, the present study assesses the relationship between company performance and family-friendly policies. The results of this study show that there is a positive relationship between companies that have family-friendly policies and its performance. This conclusion may encourage and stimulate top-level managers, especially those who are more traditional and conservative, to the implementation of these policies as well give a new sight to the Government to create more incentives that can also influence positively on the implementation decision.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Gustavo Marques.
