    Local investigation of femtosecond laser induced dynamics of water nanoclusters on Cu(111)

    We explore the dynamics of low temperature interfacial water nanoclusters on Cu(111) by femtosecond-laser excitation, scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory. Laser illumination can be used to induce single molecules to diffuse within water clusters and across the surface, breaking and reforming hydrogen bonds. A linear diffusion probability with laser fluence is observed up to 0.6 J/m2 and we suggest that diffusion is initiated by hot electron attachment and detachment processes. The density functional calculations shed light on the detailed molecular mechanism for water diffusion that is determined by the local structure of the water clusters

    On the structure and oxygen transmission rate of biodegradable cellulose nanobarriers

    Cellulose nanofibrils have been proposed for novel barrier concepts, based on their capability to form smooth, strong and transparent films, with high oxygen barrier properties. A series of cellulose-based films were manufactured and tested with respect to their oxygen transmission rate (OTR) capabilities. The obtained OTR levels were considerably better than the levels recommended for packaging applications. Part of the nanofibrillated material applied in this study was produced with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxyl (TEMPO) mediated oxidation as pretreatment. Films made of TEMPO-pretreated samples yielded lower OTR values. The minimum obtained OTR value was 3.0 mL m-2 day-1 atm-1 with a corresponding oxygen permeability of 0.04 mL mm m-2 day-1 atm-1, tested at 50% relative humidity. The good barrier properties are due to the compact and dense structure of the films, as revealed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy.     Neutron and proton spectra from the decay of Λ\Lambda hypernuclei

    We have determined the spectra of neutrons and protons following the decay of Λ\Lambda hypernuclei through the one- and two-nucleon induced mechanisms. The momentum distributions of the primary nucleons are calculated and a Monte Carlo simulation is used to account for final state interactions. From the spectra we calculate the number of neutrons (NnN_n) and protons (NpN_p) per Λ\Lambda decay and show how the measurement of these quantities, particularly NpN_p, can lead to a determination of Γn/Γp\Gamma_n / \Gamma_p, the ratio of neutron to proton induced Λ\Lambda decay. We also show that the consideration of the two-nucleon induced channel has a repercussion in the results, widening the band of allowed values of Γn/Γp\Gamma_n / \Gamma_p with respect to what is obtained neglecting this channel.Comment: 30 pages, 12 Postscript figures, uuencoded file, ReVTeX, epsf.st

    Weak and Compact Radio Emission in Early High-Mass Star Forming Regions: I. VLA Observations

    We present a high sensitivity radio continuum survey at 6 and 1.3 \,cm using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array towards a sample of 58 high-mass star forming regions. Our sample was chosen from dust clumps within infrared dark clouds with and without IR sources (CMC-IRs, CMCs, respectively), and hot molecular cores (HMCs), with no previous, or relatively weak radio continuum detection at the 1 1\,mJy level. Due to the improvement in the continuum sensitivity of the VLA, this survey achieved map rms levels of ∼\sim 3-10 μ\muJy beam−1^{-1} at sub-arcsecond angular resolution. We extracted 70 centimeter continuum sources associated with 1.2 \,mm dust clumps. Most sources are weak, compact, and are prime candidates for high-mass protostars. Detection rates of radio sources associated with the mm dust clumps for CMCs, CMC-IRs and HMCs are 6%\%, 53%\% and 100%\%, respectively. This result is consistent with increasing high-mass star formation activity from CMCs to HMCs. The radio sources located within HMCs and CMC-IRs occur close to the dust clump centers with a median offset from it of 12,000 \,AU and 4,000 \,AU, respectively. We calculated 5 - 25 \,GHz spectral indices using power law fits and obtain a median value of 0.5 (i.e., flux increasing with frequency), suggestive of thermal emission from ionized jets. This is demonstrated by the recent huge increase in the number of publications making use of this new approach. The usage of machine learning methods, however is still far from trivial and many problems still need to be solved.     The Dwarf Galaxy Population of the Dorado group down to Mv=-11

    We present V and I CCD photometry of suspected low-surface brightness dwarf galaxies detected in a survey covering ~2.4 deg^2 around the central region of the Dorado group of galaxies. The low-surface brightness galaxies were chosen based on their sizes and magnitudes at the limiting isophote of 26.0V\mu. The selected galaxies have magnitudes brighter than V=20 (Mv=-11 for an assumed distance to the group of 17.2 Mpc), with central surface brightnesses \mu0>22.5 V mag/arcsec^2, scale lengths h>2'', and diameters > 14'' at the limiting isophote. Using these criteria, we identified 69 dwarf galaxy candidates. Four of them are large very low-surface brightness galaxies that were detected on a smoothed image, after masking high surface brightness objects. Monte Carlo simulations performed to estimate completeness, photometric uncertainties and to evaluate our ability to detect extended low-surface brightness galaxies show that the completeness fraction is, on average, > 80% for dwarf galaxies with −17<MV<−10.5-17<M_{V}<-10.5 and 22.5<\mu0<25.5 V mag/arcsec^2, for the range of sizes considered by us (D>14''). The V-I colors of the dwarf candidates vary from -0.3 to 2.3 with a peak on V-I=0.98, suggesting a range of different stellar populations in these galaxies. The projected surface density of the dwarf galaxies shows a concentration towards the group center similar in extent to that found around five X-ray groups and the elliptical galaxy NGC1132 studied by Mulchaey and Zabludoff (1999), suggesting that the dwarf galaxies in Dorado are probably physically associated with the overall potential well of the group.Comment: 32 pages, 16 postscript figures and 3 figures in GIF format, aastex v5.0.     Weak and Compact Radio Emission in Early High-Mass Star Forming Regions: II. The Nature of the Radio Sources

    In this study we analyze 70 radio continuum sources associated with dust clumps and considered to be candidates for the earliest stages of high-mass star formation. The detection of these sources was reported by Rosero et al. (2016), who found most of them to show weak (<{\scriptstyle <}1 mJy) and compact (< {\scriptstyle <}\,0.6′′^{\prime \prime}) radio emission. Herein, we used the observed parameters of these sources to investigate the origin of the radio continuum emission. We found that at least ∼30%\sim 30\% of these radio detections are most likely ionized jets associated with high-mass protostars, but for the most compact sources we cannot discard the scenario that they represent pressure-confined HII regions. This result is highly relevant for recent theoretical models based on core accretion that predict the first stages of ionization from high-mass stars to be in the form of jets. Additionally, we found that properties such as the radio luminosity as a function of the bolometric luminosity of ionized jets from low and high-mass stars are extremely well-correlated. Our data improve upon previous studies by providing further evidence of a common origin for jets independently of luminosity.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Ap

    Bright galaxies at Hubble's redshift detection frontier: Preliminary results and design from the redshift z~9-10 BoRG pure-parallel HST survey

    We present the first results and design from the redshift z~9-10 Brightest of the Reionizing Galaxies {\it Hubble Space Telescope} survey BoRG[z9-10], aimed at searching for intrinsically luminous unlensed galaxies during the first 700 Myr after the Big Bang. BoRG[z9-10] is the continuation of a multi-year pure-parallel near-IR and optical imaging campaign with the Wide Field Camera 3. The ongoing survey uses five filters, optimized for detecting the most distant objects and offering continuous wavelength coverage from {\lambda}=0.35{\mu}m to {\lambda}=1.7{\mu}m. We analyze the initial ~130 arcmin2^2 of area over 28 independent lines of sight (~25% of the total planned) to search for z>7 galaxies using a combination of Lyman break and photometric redshift selections. From an effective comoving volume of (5-25) times105times 10^5 Mpc3^3 for magnitudes brighter than mAB=26.5−24.0m_{AB}=26.5-24.0 in the H160H_{160}-band respectively, we find five galaxy candidates at z~8.3-10 detected at high confidence (S/N>8), including a source at z~8.4 with mAB=24.5 (S/N~22), which, if confirmed, would be the brightest galaxy identified at such early times (z>8). In addition, BoRG[z9-10] data yield four galaxies with 7.3≲z≲87.3 \lesssim z \lesssim 8. These new Lyman break galaxies with m≲26.5\lesssim26.5 are ideal targets for follow-up observations from ground and space based observatories to help investigate the complex interplay between dark matter growth, galaxy assembly, and reionization.Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJ. 21 pages, 11 figures, 4 table
