    Get PDF
Effect of soybean expeller supplementation during the final phase of sow gestation on litter birth weight

Nutrition plays a key role in the production of pigs, especially in pregnant sows, where modifications in nutritional requirements can affect their productive performance. The aim of this study was to evaluate nutritional supplementation with soybean expeller in sows during the last third of the gestation period and its effect on litter birth weight. A quasi-experimental study was conducted on a farrow-to-finish farm, where 192 sows were equally assigned to treatment and control groups. Several variables were recorded at both the sow and piglet level. The treatment group consisted of piglets from 95 sows supplemented with soybean expeller during the final phase of gestation (20 days), and the comparison group consisted of piglets from 97 sows fed only with a commercial balanced ration (control group). Soybean expeller supplementation increased individual piglet weight by 190-270 g, and the increased number of live piglets could decrease the weight of each piglet. Moreover, the number of piglets weighing <900 g decreased by 10% as compared to the control group, indicating that supplementation could improve pre-weaning mortality. Our results suggest that soybean expeller supplementation in sows during the last third of the gestation period could improve production performance, especially on organic farms

Background and Aim: Salmonellosis is one of the most common foodborne diseases in the world, and the increasing antibiotic resistance in Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica recovered from food animals constitutes an important risk from a One Health approach. This study aimed to characterize antibiotic resistance and some of its associated resistance determinants in different S. enterica serovars isolated from pigs in Argentina. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on Salmonella strains isolated between 2011 and 2015 from pigs in the Pampean region of Argentina. The antimicrobial susceptibility patterns to 21 antimicrobials and some antibiotic resistance determinants were characterized in 55 Salmonella isolates, representing 58 farms. Results: We identified 56% (n=30) of the strains as multidrug-resistant, where resistance to tetracycline (62%, n=34), ampicillin (53%, n=29), nalidixic acid (53%, n=29), chloramphenicol (33%, n=18), and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (31%, n=17) was most common. The wide range of resistance to ampicillin correlates with the presence of TEM type β-lactamases in the strains. However, high susceptibility was found in the new generation of β-lactams. Fluoroquinolone resistance is a major concern. Most strains with decreased susceptibility to ciprofloxacin showed gyrA mutations and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance gene qnrB. Conclusion: Here, we identified broad resistance to some antibiotics frequently used in human therapeutics and several easily transferable resistance mechanisms that could endanger public health.Fil: Parada, Julian. Cellular and molecular aspects of diabetic nephropathy; the role of VEGF-A

    Get PDF
AbstractThe prevalence of diabetes mellitus increased during the last century and it is estimated that 45% of the patients are not diagnosed. In South America the prevalence of diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD) increased, with a great disparity among the countries with respect to access to dialysis. In Ecuador it is one of the main causes of mortality, principally in the provinces located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. The greatest single cause of beginning dialysis is diabetic nephropathy (DN). Even using the best therapeutic options for DN, the residual risk of proteinuria and of terminal CKD remains high. In this review we indicate the importance of the problem globally and in our region. We analyse relevant cellular and molecular studies that illustrate the crucial significance of glomerular events in DN development and evolution and in insulin resistance. We include basic anatomical, pathophysiological and clinical concepts, with special attention to the role of angiogenic factors such as the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF-A) and their relationship to the insulin receptor, endothelial isoform of nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and angiopoietins. We also propose various pathways that have therapeutic potential in our opinion. Greater in-depth study of VEGF-A and angiopoietins, the state of glomerular VEGF resistance, the relationship of VEGF receptor 2/nephrin, VEGF/insulin receptors/nephrin and the relationship of VEGF/eNOS-NO at glomerular level could provide solutions to the pressing world problem of DN and generate new treatment alternatives

Anodic Behavior of Alloy 22 in Bicarbonate Media: Effect of Alloying

AbstractThe alloy 22 (UNS N06022) is one of the candidates for the manufacture of containers of radioactive waste high level. These containers provide services in natural environments characterized by multi-ionic solutions, it is estimated they could suffer three types of deterioration: general corrosion, localized corrosion (specifically crevice) and stress corrosion cracking (SCC). It has been confirmed to produce cracking, requires the presence of bicarbonate and chloride ions. It has also determined that susceptibility to SCC could be related to the occurrence of an anodic peak in the polarization curves in these media to at potentials previous transpassive zone. The aim of this work is to study the anodic behavior of alloy 22 and its alloying effect in different media containing bicarbonate and chloride ions in different concentrations and temperatures.Polarization curves were made of alloy 22 (Ni-22% Cr-13% Mo), Ni-Mo (Ni-28, 5% Mo) and Ni-Cr (Ni-20% Cr) under the following conditions: 1mol/L NaCl at 90°C, and 1.148mol/L NaHCO3, 1.148mol/L NaHCO3 + 1 mol/L NaCl, 1.148mol/L NaHCO3 + 0.1mol/L NaCl at 90°C, 75°C, 60°C and 25°C.It was found that the alloy 22 has a current peak in the anodic at potential previous to transpassive zone, only when the medium has bicarbonate ions. Curves performed in 1mol/L NaCl did not show any anodic peak, in any of the alloys tested. The curves made to alloys Ni-Mo and Ni-Cr in the media with bicarbonate ions, allowed to determine that Cr, is responsible for the appearance of the anodic peak in the Alloy 22. The curves of alloy B-3 showed no current peak in the conditions studied. The potential, at which the peak appears in the Alloy 22 and Ni-Cr alloy, increases with decreasing temperature. It also presents a variation of the peak with the composition of the solution. When the chloride ion is added to bicarbonate solution, the peak is shifted potential and higher current densities, depending on the concentration of added chloride ions
