Ut Musica Poesis: An Approach to the Dialogue between Literature and Music
[Abstract] The pervasive presence of music in contemporary fiction parallels the crucial role played by painting in novels and short stories since the late 1990s. Such a parallel, however, has not had a correspondence in the field of interart poetics, since the growing interest in the critical assessment of the literature-painting interface cannot be matched by the scarce attention paid to the dialogue between literature and music nowadays. This unequal reception of the interaction of the sister arts emerges as the area of enquiry of the present paper, which examines the appraisal of the relationship of literature and music in comparison with that of literature and painting. Moreover, and in an attempt to sketch a theoretical framework reflecting the current relevance of the musico-literary conversation, the paper explores a revised version of the classical strategy of ekphrasis, and suggests a new variant of the traditional ut pictura poesis maxim
Wonderful Creatures and Liminality in A.S. Byatt's Short Fiction.
Política de acceso abierto tomada de: http://biblioteca.cchs.csic.es/registro_buscareditoriales.php?id=164This chapter departs from the anthropological concept of liminality as a fruitful theoretical framework to examine the recurrence of wonderful creatures in Byatt’s fiction, and particularly in her short stories. My contention is that, in its application to the exploration of wonderful creatures in Byatt’s short fiction, liminality operates on two main levels: ontological (as a state or condition) and phenomenological (as an experience or process). Firstly, from the ontological perspective, liminality becomes an apt critical tool to explore the in-between condition of characters immersed in a fluid state of metamorphosis. Secondly, from the point of view of phenomenology, the experience of a traumatic event is symbolically depicted as the encounter with wonderful creatures, and this encounter triggers a change in the character that places the experience as a liminal transition in the character’s evolution. In the light of this, the aim of the present chapter is to analyse the presence of wonderful creatures in Byatt’s short stories, exploring two types of supernatural beings from the point of view of liminality: those involving a process of female metamorphosis, in-between the human and the non-human (the lamia in “A Lamia in the Cévennes” and the troll woman in “A Stone Woman”), and those projecting the liminal passage through a traumatic or painful experience in the form of a terrifying monster (the creatures in “Dragons’ Breath” and “The Thing in the Forest”)
Ekphrasis Revisited: Crossing Artistic Boundaries.
Política de acceso abierto tomada de: http://biblioteca.cchs.csic.es/registro_buscareditoriales.php?id=767
https://brill.com/page/419324In the context of the preeminence of relationality in contemporary literature and criticism, the concept of ekphrasis is undergoing a process of revision that points to the broadening of the scope of the interartistic dialogue, and to the current prevalence of a semiotic turn in the aesthetic and critical appraisal of the arts and their intersections. Nowadays, writers and critics alike are paying special attention to the interdisciplinary potential of literary creativity and theory, going beyond seemingly well-established assumptions such as the notion of the “two cultures”, or the narrow view of intertextuality as a practice restricted to the purely textual medium.
The growing appeal of this cross-boundary perspective is clearly reflected in the changing reformulations of the classical strategy of ekphrasis, which becomes the focus of study of the present contribution. This chapter addresses contemporary revisions of ekphrasis in the context of the interaction between the verbal and the visual as a major ground for the development of interartistic relationships. In the light of this, the critical interest in the confluence between word and image, in the ut pictura poesis tradition, will be explored first, focusing then on recent approaches to the ekphrastic strategy that challenge the limits traditionally imposed on the arts
Sense and Sensibility revisited: Emma Tennats’s Elinor and Marianne
Elinor and Marianne is a playfully parodic sequel to Sense and Sensibility in which Emma Tennant explores the lives of Austen.’s characters after the .‘happy ending.’ of Sense and Sensibility. Apart from exposing the artificiality of some realistic conventions underlying Austen.’s novel, Elinor and Marianne articulates a change in the narrative mode which replaces the monological perspective of the omniscient narrative by the dialogic focalisation of the multiple narrators of an epistolary novel. This change opens the way for the exploration of the characters of Sense and Sensibility, whose behaviour and attitudes in Elinor and Marianne invite the reader to revisit their presentation and appraisal in Austen.’s novel.
Natural elements and spaces in A.S. Byatt’s short stories
This paper examines the centrality of nature in Byatt’s short fiction, tracing the presence of natural elements and spaces in some of her short stories, and their association with female characters and experiences. In the course of this examination, special attention will be paid to the recurrent setting of the forest, analysing the implications of this natural space for the configuration, structure and meaning of some of Byatt's short stories.Universidad de Málaga. Pictures Worth a Thousand Words: Metaphorical Images of Textual Interdependence.
Política de acceso abierto tomada de: https://publicera.kb.se/njes/openaccessThe forty-year history of the notion of intertextuality has witnessed the proliferation of an increasing number of divergent and even contradictory approaches to the unavoidably connective nature of texts. Many of such approaches, however, display a common tendency to portray textual interdependence in visual terms, resorting to metaphorical images in their conceptualisation of the intertextual phenomenon. This article aims at studying some of the most significant of those “metaphorical images”, or “pictures” that, standing for theories of textual relationality, are in themselves “worth a thousand words”. In the course of the study, special attention will be paid to two sets of images that relate to major trends in contemporary Anglo-American criticism: tropes of artistic creativity, and figures of presence-in-absence

Conservation and restoration of ornamental elements
[EN] Intervention on a building as complex and rich in ornamentation as the Palacio del Marqués de Dos Aguas requires special attention as regards the restoration of all the singular elements, both inside and outside, and the different finishes and furnishings.
