[EN] Emergency health services face a variety of challenges and problems related to the management of their limited resources. One of these challenges is deciding the location of health emergency vehicles such as basic life support (SVB) and SAMUs. The location of these vehicles must be able to serve as much of the population as possible in a short time, considering both present and future demand. The location of these vehicles will determine which areas are covered, as well as the response time to the different areas of the Valencian Community. This project presents a visualization tool that allows emergency service managers to visualize the result of different assignments of vehicles to locations, as well as the sector of the population covered in variable time ranges. The tool allows both the visualization of existing locations and the dynamic creation of new assignments. The tool has received feedback from real users, including healthcare personnel. The degree of satisfaction has been high and has served to compile a list of improvements to be included in the project beyond its life as a Final Degree ProjectTortosa Micó, C. (2021). The Triassic TAGI (Trias Argilo-Gréseux Inférieur) fluvial sandstones are the main oil reservoirs in the Berkine Basin, Algeria. Nonetheless, their provenance and diagenesis, and their impact on reservoir quality, are virtually unknown. Samples from the Ourhoud field, representing the Lower, Middle and Upper TAGI subunits, were studied using a combination of petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical techniques. The Lower TAGI sandstones have an average framework composition of Q98.3F0.6R1.1 and 95% of the quartz grains are monocrystalline. By contrast, the Middle–Upper TAGI sandstones have an average framework composition of Q88.3F9.8R1.9 and 79.7% of the quartz grains are monocrystalline. The Lower TAGI quartz arenites derived from Paleozoic siliciclastic rocks, whereas the Middle–Upper TAGI subarkoses originated mainly from metamorphic terrains. This change in provenance is a potential criterion for correlation within the TAGI. Also, this change has contributed to the significantly different diagenetic paths followed by the Lower TAGI quartz arenites and the Middle–Upper TAGI subarkoses. Grain-coating illitic clays are abundant in the Lower TAGI, where they exert a critical control on reservoir quality. These clays are interpreted as pedogenic and/or infiltrated in origin and to have had, in part, smectitic precursors. Shallow burial Fe-dolomite cementation was favored in the downthrown block of the field-bounding fault, where it contributed to the poor reservoir quality. Magnesite–siderite cements are multiphase. The earliest generation is composed of Fe-rich magnesite that precipitated during shallow burial from hypersaline fluids with high Mg/Ca ratios, probably refluxed residual brines associated with the Liassic evaporites. Later magnesite–siderite generations precipitated during deeper burial from waters with progressively higher Fe/Mg ratios. Authigenic vermicular kaolin largely consists of dickite that replaced previously formed kaolinite. Dickitization was followed by late-stage illitization related to the dissolution of detrital and authigenic K-feldspar. Quartz, the most abundant cement, was mainly sourced by the pressure- or clay-induced dissolution of detrital quartz and is a critical factor controlling the reservoir quality. Overall, quartz cement is more abundant in the Lower TAGI than in the Middle–Upper TAGI, and this increase correlates with a decrease in average porosity. Within the Lower TAGI, quartz cement abundance is stratigraphically very variable, which is in part related to facies controlled variations in grain-coating clay, resulting in major vertical variations in reservoir quality. Anhydrite and barite cements postdate quartz overgrowth. The sulfate necessary for their formation was likely sourced by deep subsurface dissolution of Late Triassic–Liassic evaporites

Mutual fund performance: banking versus independent managers

    Get PDF
We examine the performance of mutual fund managers for a sample of Spanish mutual funds considering data on active management, loads, size and the number of funds managed per manager. We find evidence of differences in fund performance according to management: independent managers outperform their banking counterparts even when the lower associated fees are considered. Overall, our results suggest that superior active managers do exist and the slight discrepancies which arise between managers can be interpreted as agency problems

Active Management and Mutual Fund Performance

This paper analyses the relationship between active management and performance in US equity mutual funds over the period 2001-2011 for both gross and net returns. Active management is measured by time-varying parameters, idiosyncratic risk and turnover. A U-shaped relation is found, thus both the best and the worst mutual funds show a higher level of active management. This behavior is also found in the relationship between expenses and performance. Active management therefore implies selecting different strategies or investment bets with higher expenses and an unequal performance is achieved. However some level of persistence in the success of these bets is only found for the best mutual funds

On the informativeness of persistence for evaluating mutual fund performance using partial frontiers

The last few years have witnessed a rapid evolution in the literature evaluating mutual fund performance using frontier techniques. The instruments applied, mostly DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) and, to a lesser extent, FDH (Free Disposal Hull), are able to encompass several dimensions of performance, but they also have some disadvantages that might be preventing a wider acceptance. The recently developed order-m and order-α partial frontiers overcome some of the disadvantages (they are robust with respect to extreme values and noise, and do not suffer from the well-known curse of dimensionality) while keeping the main virtues of DEA and FDH (they are fully nonparametric). In this article we apply not only the non-convex counterpart of DEA (FDH) but also order-m and order-α partial frontiers to a sample of US mutual funds. The results obtained for both order-m and order-α are useful, since a full ranking of the mutual funds' performance can be obtained. We merge these methods with the literature on mutual fund performance persistence. By combining the two literatures we derive an algorithm which establishes how the choice of m and α parameters intrinsic to order-m and order-α (respectively) relate to the existence of performance persistence and the contrarian effect
