The Relationship between Trigger Price and Punishment Period in Green and Porter (1984) Game made Endogenous
Green and Porter (1984) made a huge contribution to Industrial Organization Theory where a trigger price is defined by firms and whenever the price falls below this trigger price, the firms cease to produce at the monopoly level and enter into a punishment period. Our goal with this paper is to define, endogenously in the model, relationships between the trigger price and the punishment period, which were set exogenously in the original paper.Green and Porter (1984); trigger price; punishment period
o referido comércio1
Unsupervised Graph-based Rank Aggregation for Improved Retrieval
This paper presents a robust and comprehensive graph-based rank aggregation
approach, used to combine results of isolated ranker models in retrieval tasks.
The method follows an unsupervised scheme, which is independent of how the
isolated ranks are formulated. Our approach is able to combine arbitrary
models, defined in terms of different ranking criteria, such as those based on
textual, image or hybrid content representations.
We reformulate the ad-hoc retrieval problem as a document retrieval based on
fusion graphs, which we propose as a new unified representation model capable
of merging multiple ranks and expressing inter-relationships of retrieval
results automatically. By doing so, we claim that the retrieval system can
benefit from learning the manifold structure of datasets, thus leading to more
effective results. Another contribution is that our graph-based aggregation
formulation, unlike existing approaches, allows for encapsulating contextual
information encoded from multiple ranks, which can be directly used for
ranking, without further computations and post-processing steps over the
graphs. Based on the graphs, a novel similarity retrieval score is formulated
using an efficient computation of minimum common subgraphs. Finally, another
benefit over existing approaches is the absence of hyperparameters.
A comprehensive experimental evaluation was conducted considering diverse
well-known public datasets, composed of textual, image, and multimodal
documents. Performed experiments demonstrate that our method reaches top
performance, yielding better effectiveness scores than state-of-the-art
baseline methods and promoting large gains over the rankers being fused, thus
demonstrating the successful capability of the proposal in representing queries
based on a unified graph-based model of rank fusions
Protecting Intellectual Proprietary Rights through Secure Interactive Contract Negotiation
Protection of Intellectual Proprietary Rights is currently one of the most important barriers to electronic commerce of digital contents over networks. Authors and content providers understand the immense advantages of the digital world but show some reserve. However, technologies and techniques to protect IPR in digital content exist, their deployment in a coherent way is still in an early stage. In this paper, we describe the approach followed by the OCTALIS Project towards and effective electronic commerce of digital images. After describing briefly enabling technologies, the emphasis is on contract negotiation over Internet through a secure dialog between the Service Provider and the User
Big data analytics for intra-logistics process planning in the automotive sector
The manufacturing sector is facing an important stage with Industry 4.0. This paradigm
shift impulses companies to embrace innovative technologies and to pursuit near-zero
fault, near real-time reactivity, better traceability, and more predictability, while working
to achieve cheaper product customization.
The scenario presented addresses multiple intra-logistic processes of the automotive factory
Volkswagen Autoeuropa, where different situations need to be addressed. The main
obstacle is the absence of harmonized and integrated data flows between all stages of the
intra-logistic process which leads to inefficiencies. The existence of data silos is heavily
contributing to this situation, which makes the planning of intra-logistics processes a
challenge.
The objective of the work presented here, is to integrate big data and machine learning
technologies over data generated by the several manufacturing systems present, and
thus support the management and optimisation of warehouse, parts transportation, sequencing
and point-of-fit areas. This will support the creation of a digital twin of the
intra-logistics processes. Still, the end goal is to employ deep learning techniques to
achieve predictive capabilities, all together with simulation, in order to optimize processes
planning and equipment efficiency.
The work presented on this thesis, is aligned with the European project BOOST 4.0, with
the objective to drive big data technologies in manufacturing domain, focusing on the
automotive use-case
The recent proliferation of mobile nodes with multiple wireless interfaces,
in addition to the creation of heterogeneous environments, created complex
scenarios where network operators need to provide connectivity for di erent
kinds of access networks. Therefore, the IEEE 802.21 standard has been
speci ed to facilitate and optimize handover procedures between di erent
access technologies in a seamless way. To ful l its purpose, it provides Media
Independent Handover services which allow the control and gathering of
information from di erent links. The static con guration of these services by
the MN becomes ine cient due to the amount of possible scenarios. Thus,
the MN must discover the network-supporting nodes and their capabilities
in a dynamic way. In this work, a series of proposed Media Independent
Handover discovery procedures are analyzed, implemented and evaluated
in terms of duration and amount of exchanged information. In addition,
a novel discovery procedure for local entities is proposed and evaluated,
showing that its deployment increases the performance and requires less
information exchanged
Interoperabilidade e mobilidade na internet do futuro
Research on Future Internet has been gaining traction in recent years,
with both evolutionary (e.g., Software Defined Networking (SDN)-
based architectures) and clean-slate network architectures (e.g., Information
Centric Networking (ICN) architectures) being proposed. With
each network architectural proposal aiming to provide better solutions
for specific Internet utilization requirements, an heterogeneous Future
Internet composed by several architectures can be expected, each targeting
and optimizing different use case scenarios. Moreover, the increasing
number of mobile devices, with increasing capabilities and
supporting different connectivity technologies, are changing the patterns
of traffic exchanged in the Internet.
As such, this thesis focuses on the study of interoperability and mobility
in Future Internet architectures, two key requirements that need to be
addressed for the widely adoption of these network architectures. The
first contribution of this thesis is an interoperability framework that,
by enabling resources to be shared among different network architectures,
avoids resources to be restricted to a given network architecture
and, at the same time, promotes the initial roll out of new network
architectures. The second contribution of this thesis consists on the
development of enhancements for SDN-based and ICN network architectures
through IEEE 802.21 mechanisms to facilitate and optimize
the handover procedures on those architectures. The last contribution
of this thesis is the definition of an inter-network architecture mobility
framework that enables MNs to move across access network supporting
different network architectures without losing the reachability to
resources being accessed. All the proposed solutions were evaluated
with results highlighting the feasibility of such solutions and the impact
on the overall communication.
A primeira contribuição
A segunda contribuição desta tese consiste
Finalmente, a terceira contribuição
The impact of COVID-19 on international trade - case study of intersped
This report covers the curricular internship from Porto Accounting and Business School's Master's degree in Intercultural Studies for Business. The internship was completed at Intersped – trânsitos e navegação, lda., a freight forwarding company.
The trade of goods and services among different civilizations is a centuries- old activity that dates back to the dawn of time. International trade, on the other hand, refers to an exchange between citizens of different countries. It explanation and study only rised with the establishment of the modern nation-state at the end of the European Middle Ages.
One of the most significant achievements of the last century was the integration of national economies into a global economic system. This process of integration, known as Globalization, has resulted in a significant increase in cross- national trade. The globalization process has resulted in a rise in international trade over time. As a result, both consumers and businesses now have access to a greater selection of products and services.
The objective of this report is to present and analyze the internship at Intersped, a company that leads with trade both national and international daily. It is also proposed to portray in full detail the tasks and functions carried out troughout the internship. Furthermore, a study, based on quantitative research, was conducted analyzing the main incident of the last two years – COVID-19, in order to perceive what was it impact on international trade, at a macroeconomic level and then at a microeconomic level
Monetary policy, default risk and the exchange rate
In a country with high probability of default, higher interest rates may render the currency less attractive if sovereign default is costly. This paper develops that intuition in a simple model and estimates the effect of changes in interest rates on the exchange rate in Brazil using data from the dates surrounding the monetary policy committee meetings and the methodology of identification through heteroskedasticity. Indeed, we find that unexpected increases in interest rates tend to lead the Brazilian currency to depreciate.
