Nonlinear model of leachate anaerobic digestion treatment process

In this report a continuous adaptive high−gain observer method is presented for the estimation of state variables that could not be measurable online and unknown time−varying parameters of leachate anaerobic digestion treatment process. The high−gain observer is a variant of the Luenberger extended observer and involves an adjustable gain parameter. It is characterized by easy implementation and calibration, is stable and exhibit exponential convergence. The observer is based on a simplified mathematical model of the system. Calibration of the model was performed with real data from the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor for landfill leachate treatment in open loop under normal operational conditions. The model performance is evaluated via numerical simulations showing adequate results. The criteria used for considering the model as acceptable is to calculate the values of Mean Magnitude of Relative Error (MMRE) and Prediction at level l.Peer reviewe

Modelamiento y análisis de pequeña señal de un generador de inducción y un STATCOM conectados a un sistema de potencia

This paper presents the modeling and small-signal analysis of an induction generator (IG) and a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) connected to an inÞ nite bus bar, representing a power system, the IG is modeled as Þ fth-order system and is coupled to a STATCOM is studied as a model of Þ rst order. The dynamic behaviorwas simulated and compared using MATLAB/ Simulink, two conditions of disturbance: a variation in the torque of the machine and a variationin the inÞ nite bus bar voltage because of a failure at this point. The responses obtained by the software show that the compensator acts appropriately counteracting power and voltage variations. Significantly, it must add a stage of tuning parameters to improve the responses

Special braced stairs versus typical braced frames: new architectural-structural-seismic approach to stair design

This paper presents a new approach to the project of steel buildings, mainly focused on the architectural, structural, and seismic design of stairs. The objective is to design a structural stair system capable of controlling seismic damage and contributing to the bracing system of the building. The article begins with a review of the seismic standard (ATC, FEMA, and EC8) on which the current design criteria for new buildings with stairs are based. The research is based on two spatial building models (A–B) with the same bracing elements but placed differently. Reference Model A follows classical design approaches. It means, stairs are considered nonstructural elements that do not influence the seismic behavior of the building. This structure corresponds to typical braced frames (IV-CBF and EBF) according to EC8. Model B includes a stair system designed to help control the effects of inter-story drifts and inertia forces. In this case, the same bracing elements of Model A were integrated into the stair structure of Model B. A comparative seismic behavior analysis of typically braced frames (A) versus specially braced stairs (B) is presented. The research was based on the static nonlinear (pushover) analysis and the capacity spectrum method (ATC-40) according to the seismic performance levels (FEMA) and damage limitation (EC8). Finally, the braced stairs was verified via nonlinear time-history analysis in order to better capture the structural safety of the evacuation routes and their influence on the behavior of the building. This deterministic analysis of the braced stairs verified satisfactory results compared to reference bracing systems.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Structure-Force Field Generator for Molecular Dynamics Simulations

    Get PDF
Atomistic and molecular simulations have become an important research field due to the progress made in computer performance and the necessity of new and improved materials. Despite this, first principle simulations of large molecules are still not possible because the high computational time and resources required. Other methods, such as molecular dynamics, allow the simplification of calculations by defining energy terms to describe multiple atom interactions without compromising accuracy significantly. A group of these energy terms is called a force field, and each force field has its own descriptions and parameters. The objective of this project was to develop a nanoHUB tool that allowed the calculation of all the force field parameters required to perform molecular dynamics simulations in polymers and molecular systems using a widely used software called Large scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator (LAMMPS). The tool is written in Python 2.7 using OpenBabel and LAMMPS libraries, and it is currently implemented for generating DREIDING parameters and atomic charges with two methods: Gasteiger and Qeq. The LAMMPS Structure Generator takes an input file containing the atom positions in any system and format supported by OpenBabel and outputs a file with all the additional parameters required to run a simulation in LAMMPS using DREIDING force field. This software allows any researcher to run a simulation of polymers or molecules with an input file created immediately and for free
