    Get PDF
Inner ear lipomas are rare benign congenital lesions, most frequently presenting at the internal auditory canal and labirynth. Lipomas of the facial nerve are even less frequent. We present a case of a lipoma involving all internal ear structures and VII nerve canal and extending intracranially and extracranially, presenting with facial palsy and ipsilateral hearing loss. To our knowledge this is the most extensive case of inner ear lipoma described

    Acenocoumarol-related fatal in-utero subdural hematoma

Fetal intracranial hemorrhages are typical of the germinal matrix, associated with fetal or placental problems. Subdural hemorrhages in utero are extremely rare but have been reported in coagulation disorders or maternal trauma. We present a case of atraumatic subdural hematoma in a 35 gestational week fetus, whose mother was under oral anticoagulation for prosthetic mitral valve. The mother complained of reduced fetal movement and ultrasound was inconclusive. Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed the following day. MRI revealed an extensive subdural hematoma involving both hemispheric convexities and the tentorium, with significant mass effect. No heartbeat was detected in an US performed 1 day after MRI. Autopsy confirmed the diagnosis. To our knowledge it is the most extensive acenocoumarol-related in-utero SDH reported, and an excellent example of how fetal MRI might aid in prenatal diagnosis of fetal hemorrhagic complications

This paper aims to discuss the challenges of implementing a game-creation learning strategy to approach Media and Information Literacy (MIL), by reflecting on how different affordances and constraints, such as classroom’s design, setting and the adopted pedagogical strategies impact the learning process. We also contribute to a critical stance on game-creation in the learning environment, by reflecting on the lessons learned and the strategies deployed to deal with unforeseen events while working with students and gathering data. This will allow us, to refine and complexify the practices surrounding this pedagogical tool. This proposal is framed on GamiLearning (2015-2018), a research project that aims to promote critical and participative dimensions of MIL in children through the creation of digital games. The project argues that the process of creation and development of videogames can help the promotion of MIL, in particular operational, editorial, organizational, and digital identity management skills. The present paper focuses on the project’s fieldwork, developed in three different schools in Greater Lisbon, Portugal, with fifth-graders, aged 9 to 12. The data was gathered using observation, and an observation grid, specifically developed for the project, was filled out for each session, considering the following categories: MIL Skills, student’s behaviors and beliefs, pedagogical strategies and difficulties. The data were subjected to content analysis with the help of NVivo 11, with several researchers from the team involved in creating a coding scheme that could be deployed in other MIL projects around game creation activities. The main difficulties felt by students were related to the usage of Scratch to create their own animation stories or to remix existing games, although these were also the most engaging tasks. The main pedagogical strategy used to approach game creation was project-based learning, and the main constraints are related with access issues in schools, mainly with the wi-fi network, and with the user interface usability of the used platforms. These observations aim to document game creation by students not only as a hands-on approach to the development of MIL but also as a pedagogical tool across the curriculum

Transcriptome analysis reveals the high ribosomal inhibitory action of 1,4-naphthoquinone on Meloidogyne luci infective second-stage juveniles

The root-knot nematode (RKN) Meloidogyne luci presents a threat to the production of several important crops. This nematode species was added to the European Plant Protection Organization Alert list in 2017. The scarce availability of efficient nematicides to control RKN and the phasing out of nematicides from the market have intensified the search for alternatives, such as phytochemicals with bionematicidal properties. The nematicidal activity of 1,4-naphthoquinone (1,4-NTQ) against M. luci has been demonstrated; however, knowledge of the potential mode(s) of action of this compound is still scarce. In this study, the transcriptome profile of M. luci second-stage juveniles (J2), the infective stage, in response to 1,4-NTQ exposure was determined by RNA-seq to identify genes and pathways that might be involved in 1,4-NTQ’s mode(s) of action. Control treatments, consisting of nematodes exposed to Tween® 80 (1,4-NTQ solvent) and to water, were included in the analysis. A large set of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) was found among the three tested conditions, and a high number of downregulated genes were found between 1,4-NTQ treatment and water control, reflecting the inhibitory effect of this compound on M. luci, with a great impact on processes related to translation (ribosome pathway). Several other nematode gene networks and metabolic pathways affected by 1,4-NTQ were also identified, clarifying the possible mode of action of this promising bionematicide
