Simultaneous Matrix Diagonalization for Structural Brain Networks Classification
This paper considers the problem of brain disease classification based on
connectome data. A connectome is a network representation of a human brain. The
typical connectome classification problem is very challenging because of the
small sample size and high dimensionality of the data. We propose to use
simultaneous approximate diagonalization of adjacency matrices in order to
compute their eigenstructures in more stable way. The obtained approximate
eigenvalues are further used as features for classification. The proposed
approach is demonstrated to be efficient for detection of Alzheimer's disease,
outperforming simple baselines and competing with state-of-the-art approaches
to brain disease classification
Comorbid amyloid-β pathology affects clinical and imaging features in VCD
INTRODUCTION: To date, the clinical relevance of comorbid amyloid-β (Aβ) pathology in patients with vascular cognitive disorders (VCD) is largely unknown. METHODS: We included 218 VCD patients with available cerebrospinal fluid Aβ42 levels. Patients were divided into Aβ+ mild-VCD (n = 84), Aβ- mild-VCD (n = 68), Aβ+ major-VCD (n = 31), and Aβ- major-VCD (n = 35). We measured depression with the Geriatric Depression Scale, cognition with a neuropsychological test battery and derived white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and gray matter atrophy from MRI. RESULTS: Aβ- patients showed more depressive symptoms than Aβ+. In the major-VCD group, Aβ- patients performed worse on attention (P = .02) and executive functioning (P = .008) than Aβ+. We found no cognitive differences in patients with mild VCD. In the mild-VCD group, Aβ- patients had more WMH than Aβ+ patients, whereas conversely, in the major-VCD group, Aβ+ patients had more WMH. Atrophy patterns did not differ between Aβ+ and Aβ- VCD group. DISCUSSION: Comorbid Aβ pathology affects the manifestation of VCD, but effects differ by severity of VCD
On the Stability of Non-Supersymmetric Quantum Attractors in String Theory
We study four dimensional non-supersymmetric attractors in type IIA string
theory in the presence of sub-leading corrections to the prepotential. For a
given Calabi-Yau manifold, the D0-D4 system admits an attractor point in the
moduli space which is uniquely specified by the black hole charges. The
perturbative corrections to the prepotential do not change the number of
massless directions in the black hole effective potential. We further study
non-supersymmetric D0-D6 black holes in the presence of sub-leading
corrections. In this case the space of attractor points define a hypersurface

Ammonium tetrathiomolybdate following ischemia/reperfusion injury: Chemistry, pharmacology, and impact of a new class of sulfide donor in preclinical injury models
Background: Early revascularization of ischemic organs is key to improving outcomes, yet consequent reperfusion injury may be harmful. Reperfusion injury is largely attributed to excess mitochondrial production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Sulfide inhibits mitochondria and reduces ROS production. Ammonium tetrathiomolybdate (ATTM), a copper chelator, releases sulfide in a controlled and novel manner, and may offer potential therapeutic utility.
Methods and findings: In vitro, ATTM releases sulfide in a time-, pH-, temperature-, and thiol-dependent manner. Controlled sulfide release from ATTM reduces metabolism (measured as oxygen consumption) both in vivo in awake rats and ex vivo in skeletal muscle tissue, with a superior safety profile compared to standard sulfide generators. Given intravenously at reperfusion/resuscitation to rats, ATTM significantly reduced infarct size following either myocardial or cerebral ischemia, and conferred survival benefit following severe hemorrhage. Mechanistic studies (in vitro anoxia/reoxygenation) demonstrated a mitochondrial site of action (decreased MitoSOX fluorescence), where the majority of damaging ROS is produced.
Conclusions: The inorganic thiometallate ATTM represents a new class of sulfide-releasing drugs. Our findings provide impetus for further investigation of this compound as a novel adjunct therapy for reperfusion injury
All solutions of the localization equations for N=2 quantum black hole entropy
We find the most general bosonic solution to the localization equations
describing the contributions to the quantum entropy of supersymmetric black
holes in four-dimensional N=2 supergravity coupled to n_v vector multiplets.
This requires the analysis of the BPS equations of the corresponding off-shell
supergravity (including fluctuations of the auxiliary fields) with AdS2 \times
S2 attractor boundary conditions. Our work completes and extends the results of
arXiv:1012.0265 that were obtained for the vector multiplet sector, to include
the fluctuations of all the fields of the off-shell supergravity. We find that,
when the auxiliary SU(2) gauge field strength vanishes, the most general
supersymmetric configuration preserving four supercharges is labelled by n_v+1
real parameters corresponding to the excitations of the conformal mode of the
graviton and the scalars of the n_v vector multiplets. In the general case, the
localization manifold is labelled by an additional SU(2) triplet of one-forms

Cognitive appraisal of environmental stimuli induces emotion-like states in fish
The occurrence of emotions in non-human animals has been the focus of debate over the years. Recently, an interest in expanding this debate to non-tetrapod vertebrates and to invertebrates has emerged. Within vertebrates, the study of emotion in teleosts is particularly interesting since they represent a divergent evolutionary radiation from that of tetrapods, and thus they provide an insight into the evolution of the biological mechanisms of emotion. We report that Sea Bream exposed to stimuli that vary according to valence (positive, negative) and salience (predictable, unpredictable) exhibit different behavioural, physiological and neuromolecular states. Since according to the dimensional theory of emotion valence and salience define a two-dimensional affective space, our data can be interpreted as evidence for the occurrence of distinctive affective states in fish corresponding to each the four quadrants of the core affective space. Moreover, the fact that the same stimuli presented in a predictable vs. unpredictable way elicited different behavioural, physiological and neuromolecular states, suggests that stimulus appraisal by the individual, rather than an intrinsic characteristic of the stimulus, has triggered the observed responses. A matter of life and death: the Middle Neolithic population from Bom Santo Cave (Lisbon, Portugal)
The study of the Bom Santo Cave (central Portugal), a Neolithic cemetery, indicated a complex social, palaeoeconomic and population scenario. With isotope, aDNA and provenience analyses of raw materials coupled with stylistic variability of material culture items and
palaeogeographical data light is shed on the territory and social organization of a population dated to 3800–3400 cal BC, i.e. the middle phase of the period. Results indicate an itinerant farming, segmentary society, where exogamic practices were the norm and patrilocality probably predominated. Its lifeway may be that of the earliest megalithic builders of the region, but further research is needed to correctly evaluate the degree of participation in such phenomenon
BPS black holes in N=2 D=4 gauged supergravities
We construct and analyze BPS black hole solutions in gauged N=2, D=4
supergravity with charged hypermultiplets. A class of solutions can be found
through spontaneous symmetry breaking in vacua that preserve maximal
supersymmetry. The resulting black holes do not carry any hair for the scalars.
We demonstrate this with explicit examples of both asymptotically flat and
anti-de Sitter black holes. Next, we analyze the BPS conditions for
asymptotically flat black holes with scalar hair and spherical or axial
symmetry. We find solutions only in cases when the metric contains ripples and
the vector multiplet scalars become ghost-like. We give explicit examples that
can be analyzed numerically. Finally, we comment on a way to circumvent the
