Sierra Nevada National Park and Andalusian Government supplied logistic help and sampling permissions.High mountain areas are especially vulnerable to global warming, as they experience faster temperature changes than lowlands in a climate change context. Notably, increased temperatures and frequency of extreme flooding and droughts, and the consequent decrease in ice cover and water availability fluctuations, will induce important physical changes in alpine freshwater systems. Thus, assessing thermal limits and exploring overwintering strategies of aquatic alpine insects is pivotal to understanding how aquatic communities of high-mountain fresh waters will respond to climate change. However, knowledge on these topics is still scarce for aquatic alpine insects. Here, the thermal biology of adults of five diving beetle species from alpine lakes located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range (southern Iberia) was studied. Cold tolerance was measured estimating the supercooling point (SCP), lower lethal temperature (LLT), tolerance to ice enclosure and to submersion, whereas heat tolerance was assessed from the heat coma temperature and upper lethal temperature. All of the species survived ice enclosure for 3 h. Furthermore, three of the studied species had SCPs higher than their LLTs, suggesting that they could be freeze-tolerant. All species except Agabus nevadensis also were tolerant to submersion, which could be a key adaptation for overwintering underwater below the ice cover as adults, reducing risk from freezing conditions in the air. The species did not differ significantly in their upper thermal limits, which were similar to those of other dytiscids from lower altitudes. Overall, our results suggest that increasing temperatures is not expected to be the most important threat for the water beetle populations in Sierra Nevada, but rather the colonisation of alpine lakes by lowland dytiscids in a warmer climate scenario.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación/ Agencia Estatal de Investigación/ 10.13039/501100011033 (Spain) (grant no. The ESACIB (‘EScarabajos ACuáticos IBéricos’) database is provided, including all available distributional data of Iberian and Balearic water beetles from the literature up to 2013, as well as from museum and private collections, PhD theses, and other unpublished sources. The database contains 62,015 records with associated geographic data (10×10 km UTM squares) for 488 species and subspecies of water beetles, 120 of them endemic to the Iberian Peninsula and eight to the Balearic Islands. This database was used for the elaboration of the “Atlas de los Coleópteros Acuáticos de España Peninsular”. In this dataset data of 15 additional species has been added: 11 that occur in the Balearic Islands or mainland Portugal but not in peninsular Spain and an other four with mainly terrestrial habits within the genus Helophorus (for taxonomic coherence). The complete dataset is provided in Darwin Core Archive format. Some data sets have been obtained with the support of additional projects from the Spanish Government, especially 023/2007, CGL2007-61665 and CGL2013-48950. Predicting the richness of aquatic beetles and bugs in a semi-arid mediterranean region

    Get PDF
The southeastern Iberian Peninsula is a semi-arid region recognised as an area of high aquatic biodiversity. Water beetles (Coleoptera) and water bugs (Hemiptera) are two of the region's most thoroughly studied insect groups. An exhaustive database of aquatic beetles and bugs from the Region of Murcia (SE Spain) and a set of 33 variables were employed for two related purposes: a) to describe the sampling effort conducted in the study area on these groups in order to identify zones with reliable inventories and b) with this information as a base, to forecast the distribution of species richness for each group. Theoretical estimates were based on the Clench function applied to the accumulated number of samples and were constructed with general linear models (GLM). The following results were obtained: 1) the percentage of grid cells that can be considered to be well sampled in the study area (143 10 × 10 km UTM grid cells) is approximately 14 % for beetles and 22 % for bugs; 2) well-surveyed cells are evenly distributed according to the previously defined physioclimatic subareas, which enable the use of these grid cells for modelling the richness distribution; and 3) a more accurate picture of the actual richness patterns for both groups is shown by the analysis. These results were combined to identify key areas where future sampling efforts must be focused.

Basement structure of the Hontomín CO2 storage site (Spain) determined by integration of microgravity and 3-D seismic data

A multidisciplinary study has been carried out in Hontomín (Spain) to determine the basement structural setting, its geometry and the geometry of the sedimentary succession of an area aimed to be the first Spanish pilot plant for CO2 storage. An integration of coincident 3-D seismic results, borehole data and unpublished microgravity data were used to reproduce the deep structure and topography of the basement and to quantify the thickness of the Triassic Keuper evaporites. The subsurface structure is characterized by a half-graben setting filled with Keuper evaporites (up to 2000m thick), forming an extensional forced fold. All data sets clearly identify two main fault systems, compartmentalizing the main structural domain into three differentiated blocks. These faults have been interpreted to be reactivated normal faults that have led to the formation of the Hontomín dome. © Author(s) 2016.The data sets in this work have been funded by Fundación Ciudad de la Energía (Spanish Government, www.ciuden.es) and by the European Union through the “European Energy Programme for Recovery” and the Compostilla OXYCFB300 project. Search and classify topics in a corpus of text using the latent dirichlet allocation model

    Get PDF
This work aims at discovering topics in a text corpus and classifying the most relevant terms for each of the discovered topics. The process was performed in four steps: first, document extraction and data processing; second, labeling and training of the data; third, labeling of the unseen data; and fourth, evaluation of the model performance. For processing, a total of 10,322 "curriculum" documents related to data science were collected from the web during 2018-2022. The latent dirichlet allocation (LDA) model was used for the analysis and structure of the subjects. After processing, 12 themes were generated, which allowed ranking the most relevant terms to identify the skills of each of the candidates. This work concludes that candidates interested in data science must have skills in the following topics: first, they must be technical, they must have mastery of structured query language, mastery of programming languages such as R, Python, java, and data management, among other tools associated with the technology.Campus Lima Centr
