    [«Sotto ristretta legge ragionato abbiamo». Èthos and nòmos in Decameron]. Law, rule and infringement are some of the key points in the analysis of Decameron. Boccaccio’s tales are set in a period in which there were not laws. The pestilence perturbs the city of Florence; the judges and the public administrators were killed by pestilence, so human and divine laws disappeared. This article makes an enquiry about the meaning of law in the most famous Boccaccio’s work. In Decameron we can distinguish four types of laws: human, divine, natural, and a literary law, which regulate the tales (modus novellandi)

    First record of quagga mussel, Dreissena bugensis Andrusov, 1897, in Italy: morphological and genetic evidence in Lake Garda

    Here, we report the first record of quagga mussel, Dreissena bugensis Andrusov, 1897, in Italy. This mollusc is native of the Dnieper River drainage of Ukraine and is one of the most aggressive invaders in freshwater ecosystems. The spread of quagga mussels throughout Europe and Northern America begun during the 1940s and 1989, respectively. Individuals of quagga mussel were identified in February and March 2022 in two stations located in the shallow (Bardolino) and deeper basins (Castelletto di Brenzone) of Lake Garda. Samples, collected with an Eckman grab, allowed identifying individuals of quagga mussel attached on macrophytes, stones and other mollusc shells. The identification of the individuals was carried out both through the analysis of morphological characters and genetic and phylogenetic analyses using the mitochondrial COI gene. The discovery of quagga mussel is the last of a long series of reports of non-indigenous species introduced into Lake Garda. Lacking direct connection by rivers or canals with other waterbodies colonized by D. bugensis at the northern side of the Alps, a more probable cause of introduction of this new species into Lake Garda can be due to unintentional overland transport through recreational boats and fishing gear. With this new discovery, Lake Garda has confirmed its pivotal role as a southern Alpine corridor for the introduction of non-indigenous species previously established at the northern border of the Alps. Considering its high colonization rate and compared with other invasion patterns observed in Europe and North America, it can be assumed that D. bugensis will soon establish itself with dominant populations throughout Lake Garda.     Towards nZEBs : experiences in Italy

    Nowadays in the European framework the good practices for high-performing buildings realization and retrofitting are copious, but what emerges is the lack of information and data sharing about them. There are indeed no official sources for notes deriving from this kind of buildings and, moreover, there is shortage of quantitative and comparable data. In a process oriented to a large-scale diffusion of nZEBs on the market, the existing good practices of actual case studies of highperforming buildings should be kept as market benchmarks and reveal to be precious sources of information. In the light of the above, the need of a harmonized database to collect and share data deriving from different building typologies and climatic zones plays a fundamental role. Due to the weakness of the existing databases and to the necessity of having practical guidelines to design nZEBs, at Italian level, an AiCARR teamwork is targeting the development of a design guide for nZEBs in Mediterranean region, based on different national experiences. In order to reach this target the workgroup has created a detailed database, useful to collect and share information about single high-performing buildings. Its main purpose is to record nZEBs, which have been already built, with available monitored data and that represent concrete models for future designing. Because of the still scarcity of monitored nZEBs, the database is suitable not only for realized monitored buildings but also for those that are still in a design phase.     P. 141-160In 2000 the European Parliament and The European Union Council recommended that member countries assess water quality using diatoms, as part of the phytobenthos. In Italy this recommendation has given new ímpetus to the study of diatom communities and the application of biotic indices. During the summer of 2004, a total of 11 rivers of the Trentino province (Northern Italy) were sampled, revealing the presence in low abundances of the diatom Didymosphenia geminata {Lyngbye) M. Schmidt. The sites where this diatom occurred were characterised by a low pollution impact; they were also lake fed or had a regulated flow regime, although with different geologies. Morphological features of D. gemina/a frustules were analysed using LM and SEM and specimens could be referred to the morphotype "geminata". In many countries this species is expanding its distribution and in New Zealand it is considered an invasive alga. This work provides an initial report on the presence of D. geminara in the Trento province, and contributes to increasing the knowledge on its distribution in Ilaly and its ecology in the AlpsS

    A Case–Control Study by ddPCR of ALU 260/111 and LINE-1 266/97 Copy Number Ratio in Circulating Cell-Free DNA in Plasma Revealed LINE-1 266/97 as a Potential Biomarker for Early Breast Cancer Detection

    Background: In Western countries, breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer in women. Early detection has a positive impact on survival, quality of life, and public health costs. Mammography screening programs have increased early detection rates, but new approaches to more personalized surveillance could further improve diagnosis. Circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in blood could provide a potential tool for early diagnosis by analyzing cfDNA quantity, circulating tumor DNA mutations, or cfDNA integrity (cfDI). Methods: Plasma was obtained from the blood of 106 breast cancer patients (cases) and 103 healthy women (controls). Digital droplet PCR was used for the determination of ALU 260/111 bp and LINE-1 266/97 bp copy number ratio and cfDI. cfDNA abundance was calculated using copies of the EEF1A2 gene. The accuracy of biomarker discrimination was analyzed with receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). Sensitivity analyses were performed to account for age as a potential confounder. Results: Cases had significantly lower ALU 260/111 or LINE-1 266/97 copy number ratios (median; ALU 260/111 = 0.08, LINE-1 266/97 = 0.20), compared with control (median; ALU 260/111 = 0.10, LINE-1 266/97 = 0.28) (p < 0.001). ROC analysis showed that copy number ratio discriminated cases from controls (area under the curve, AUC = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.62–0.76 for ALU and 0.80, 95% CI: 0.73–0.86 for LINE-1). ROC from cfDI confirmed the better diagnostic performance of LINE-1 compared with ALU. Conclusions: Analysis of LINE-1 266/97 copy number ratio or cfDI by ddPCR appears to be a useful noninvasive test that could aid in early BC detection. Further studies in a large cohort are needed to validate the biomarker

    Anatomical substrates and neurocognitive predictors of daily numerical abilities in mild cognitive impairment.

    Patients with mild cognitive impairment experience difficulties in mathematics that affect their functioning in the activities of everyday life. What are the associated anatomical brain changes and the cognitive correlates underlying such deficits? In the present study, 33 patients with Mild Cognitive Impairments (MCI) and 29 cognitively normal controls underwent volumetric MRI, and completed the standardized battery of Numerical Activities of Daily Living (NADL) along with a comprehensive clinical neuropsychological assessment. Group differences were examined on the numerical tasks and volumetric brain measures. The gray (GM) and white matter (WM) volume correlates were also evaluated. The results showed that relative to controls, the MCI group had impairments in number comprehension, transcoding, written operations, and in daily activities involving time estimation and money usage. In the volumetric measures, group differences emerged for the transcoding subtask in the left insula and left superior temporal gyrus. Among MCI patients, number comprehension and formal numerical performance were correlated with volumetric variability in the right middle occipital areas and right frontal gyrus. Money-usage scores showed significant correlations with left mesial frontal cortex, right superior frontal and right superior temporal cortex. Regression models revealed that neuropsychological measures of long-term memory, language, visuo-spatial abilities, and abstract reasoning were predictive of the patients' decline in daily activities. The present findings suggest that early neuropathology in distributed cortical regions of the brain including frontal, temporal and occipital areas leads to a breakdown of cognitive abilities in MCI that impacts on numerical daily functioning. The findings have implications for diagnosis, clinical and domestic care of patients with MCI
