Simple method of dynamic young's modulus determination in lime and cement mortars
This study demonstrates the feasibility of using a simple method to measure the resonant
fundamental frequency for determining the MOE (dynamic Young’s modulus) of lime and
cement mortars.
The procedure follows the instructions stated in the UNE-EN ISO 12680-1 standard for
refractory products although in this study the instructions are applied to standardized RILEM
4x4x16 cm test samples made of lime and cement mortars.
The simplicity of the procedure as well as its correlation to other measured variables,
suggest that it can be widely applied in studies about the evolution of the physical
characteristics in lime mortars, such as mechanical strength, static Young’s modulus,

mHealth: providing a mindfulness app for women with chronic pelvic pain in gynaecology outpatient clinics: qualitative data analysis of user experience and lessons learnt
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether a pre-existing smartphone app to teach mindfulness meditation is acceptable to women with chronic pelvic pain (CPP) and can be integrated into clinical practice within the National Health Service (NHS) CPP pathways, and to inform the design of a potential randomised clinical trial.
DESIGN: A prestudy patient and public involvement (PPI) group to collect feedback on the acceptability of the existing app and study design was followed by a three-arm randomised feasibility trial. In addition, we undertook interviews and focus groups with patients and staff to explore app usability and acceptability. We also obtained participant comments on the research process, such as acceptability of the study questionnaires.
SETTING: Two gynaecology clinics within Barts Health NHS, London, UK.
PARTICIPANTS: Patients with CPP lasting ≥6 months with access to smartphone or personal computer and understanding of basic English.
INTERVENTION: The intervention was mindfulness meditation content plus additional pain module delivered by a smartphone app. Active controls received muscle relaxation content from the same app. Passive (waiting list) controls received usual care.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Themes on user feedback, app usability and integration, and reasons for using/not using the app.
RESULTS: The use of the app was low in both active groups. Patients in the prestudy PPI group, all volunteers, were enthusiastic about the app (convenience, content, portability, flexibility, ease of use). Women contributing to the interview or focus group data (n=14), from a 'real world' clinic (some not regular app users), were less positive, citing as barriers lack of opportunities/motivation to use the app and lack of familiarity and capabilities with technology. Staff (n=7) were concerned about the potential need for extra support for them and for the patients, and considered the app needed organisational backing and peer acceptance.
CONCLUSION: The opinions of prestudy PPI volunteers meeting in their private time may not represent those of patients recruited at a routine clinic appointment. It may be more successful to codesign/codevelop an app with typical users than to adapt existing apps for use in real-world clinical populations.

Mirandesa breed calves: growth performance and carcass characterization affected by sex and livestock production system

A total of 2,263 and 60 animals for growth performance and carcass characteristics, respectively were used. Initially, the suitability of several equations to describe the growth of cattle from the Mirandesa variety was studied. In all situations, mathematical models were formulated with parameters of clear biological meaning. Bertalanffy and Gompertz equations were the most satisfactory equations to model the growth of males and females, respectively. Calves from traditional system were 68.61 kg heavier than animals from extensive system. On the other hand, calves from traditional systems showed (P<0.01) higher dressing percentage compared to animals from extensive system. There were significant differences for all morphometric parameters by LPS effect with the exception of internal depth pf chest, whereas sex effect had less importance. The LPS had statistically significant effect in all individual joints in the front quarter and hind quarter with the exception of sirloin and eye of round for front quarter and shoulder and the sum of chuck plus neck in the hind quarter. Chaotic motion of space charge wavefronts in semiconductors under time-independent voltage bias
A standard drift-diffusion model of space charge wave propagation in
semiconductors has been studied numerically and analytically under dc voltage
bias. For sufficiently long samples, appropriate contact resistivity and
applied voltage - such that the sample is biased in a regime of negative
differential resistance - we find chaos in the propagation of nonlinear fronts
(charge monopoles of alternating sign) of electric field. The chaos is always
low-dimensional, but has a complex spatial structure; this behavior can be
interpreted using a finite dimensional asymptotic model in which the front
(charge monopole) positions and the electrical current are the only dynamical

Chaos in resonant-tunneling superlattices
Spatio-temporal chaos is predicted to occur in n-doped semiconductor
superlattices with sequential resonant tunneling as their main charge transport
mechanism. Under dc voltage bias, undamped time-dependent oscillations of the
current (due to the motion and recycling of electric field domain walls) have
been observed in recent experiments. Chaos is the result of forcing this

Dynamics of Electric Field Domains and Oscillations of the Photocurrent in a Simple Superlattice Model
A discrete model is introduced to account for the time-periodic oscillations
of the photocurrent in a superlattice observed by Kwok et al, in an undoped 40
period AlAs/GaAs superlattice. Basic ingredients are an effective negative
differential resistance due to the sequential resonant tunneling of the
photoexcited carriers through the potential barriers, and a rate equation for
the holes that incorporates photogeneration and recombination. The
photoexciting laser acts as a damping factor ending the oscillations when its
power is large enough. The model explains: (i) the known oscillatory static I-V
characteristic curve through the formation of a domain wall connecting high and
low electric field domains, and (ii) the photocurrent and photoluminescence
time-dependent oscillations after the domain wall is formed. In our model, they
arise from the combined motion of the wall and the shift of the values of the
electric field at the domains. Up to a certain value of the photoexcitation,
the non-uniform field profile with two domains turns out to be metastable:
after the photocurrent oscillations have ceased, the field profile slowly
relaxes toward the uniform stationary solution (which is reached on a much
longer time scale). Multiple stability of stationary states and hysteresis are
also found. An interpretation of the oscillations in the photoluminescence

Universality of the Gunn effect: self-sustained oscillations mediated by solitary waves
The Gunn effect consists of time-periodic oscillations of the current flowing
through an external purely resistive circuit mediated by solitary wave dynamics
of the electric field on an attached appropriate semiconductor. By means of a
new asymptotic analysis, it is argued that Gunn-like behavior occurs in
specific classes of model equations. As an illustration, an example related to

MEMPHIS: a smartphone app using psychological approaches for women with chronic pelvic pain presenting to gynaecology clinics: a randomised feasibility trial.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the feasibility of a randomised trial of a modified, pre-existing, mindfulness meditation smartphone app for women with chronic pelvic pain. DESIGN: Three arm randomised feasibility trial. SETTING: Women were recruited at two gynaecology clinics in the UK. Interventions were delivered via smartphone or computer at a location of participants choosing. PARTICIPANTS: Women were eligible for the study if they were over 18, had been experiencing organic or non-organic chronic pelvic pain for 6 months or more, and had access to a computer or smartphone. 90 women were randomised. INTERVENTIONS: Daily mindfulness meditation delivered by smartphone app, an active control app which delivered muscle relaxation techniques, and usual care without app. Interventions were delivered over 60 days. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Outcomes included length of recruitment, follow-up rates, adherence to the app interventions, and clinical outcomes measured at baseline, two, three and 6 months. RESULTS: The target sample size was recruited in 145 days. Adherence to the app interventions was extremely low (mean app use 1.8 days mindfulness meditation group, 7.0 days active control). Fifty-seven (63%) women completed 6-month follow-up, and 75 (83%) women completed at least one postrandomisation follow-up. The 95% CIs for clinical outcomes were consistent with no benefit from the mindfulness meditation app; for example, mean differences in pain acceptance scores at 60 days (higher scores are better) were -2.3 (mindfulness meditation vs usual care, 95% CI: -6.6 to 2.0) and -4.0 (mindfulness meditation vs active control, 95% CI: -8.1 to 0.1). CONCLUSIONS: Despite high recruitment and adequate follow-up rates, demonstrating feasibility, the extremely low adherence suggests a definitive randomised trial of the mindfulness meditation app used in this study is not warranted. A cluster of nucleotide-binding site-leucine-rich repeat genes resides in a barley powdery mildew resistance quantitative trait loci on 7HL
Powdery mildew causes severe yield losses in barley production worldwide. Although many resistance genes have been described, only a few have already been cloned. A strong QTL (quantitative trait locus) conferring resistance to a wide array of powdery mildew isolates was identified in a Spanish barley landrace on the long arm of chromosome 7H. Previous studies narrowed down the QTL position, but were unable to identify candidate genes or physically locate the resistance. In this study, the exome of three recombinant lines from a high-resolution mapping population was sequenced and analyzed, narrowing the position of the resistance down to a single physical contig. Closer inspection of the region revealed a cluster of closely related NBS-LRR (nucleotide-binding site–leucine-rich repeat containing protein) genes. Large differences were found between the resistant lines and the reference genome of cultivar Morex, in the form of PAV (presence-absence variation) in the composition of the NBS-LRR cluster. Finally, a template-guided assembly was performed and subsequent expression analysis revealed that one of the new assembled candidate genes is transcribed. In summary, the results suggest that NBS-LRR genes, absent from the reference and the susceptible genotypes, could be functional and responsible for the powdery mildew resistance. The procedure followed is an example of the use of NGS (next-generation sequencing) tools to tackle the challenges of gene cloning when the target gene is absent from the reference genome
Chaotic dynamics of electric-field domains in periodically driven superlattices
Self-sustained time-dependent current oscillations under dc voltage bias have
been observed in recent experiments on n-doped semiconductor superlattices with
sequential resonant tunneling. The current oscillations are caused by the
motion and recycling of the domain wall separating low- and high-electric-
field regions of the superlattice, as the analysis of a discrete drift model
shows and experimental evidence supports. Numerical simulation shows that
different nonlinear dynamical regimes of the domain wall appear when an
external microwave signal is superimposed on the dc bias and its driving
frequency and driving amplitude vary. On the frequency - amplitude parameter
plane, there are regions of entrainment and quasiperiodicity forming Arnol'd
tongues. Chaos is demonstrated to appear at the boundaries of the tongues and
in the regions where they overlap. Coexistence of up to four electric-field
