Adiabatic quantum dynamics of a random Ising chain across its quantum critical point
We present here our study of the adiabatic quantum dynamics of a random Ising
chain across its quantum critical point. The model investigated is an Ising
chain in a transverse field with disorder present both in the exchange coupling
and in the transverse field. The transverse field term is proportional to a
function which, as in the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, is linearly
reduced to zero in time with a rate , , starting
at from the quantum disordered phase () and ending
at in the classical ferromagnetic phase (). We first analyze
the distribution of the gaps -- occurring at the critical point --
which are relevant for breaking the adiabaticity of the dynamics. We then
present extensive numerical simulations for the residual energy
and density of defects at the end of the annealing, as a function of
the annealing inverse rate . %for different lenghts of the chain. Both
the average and are found to behave
logarithmically for large , but with different exponents, with , and
. We propose a mechanism for
-behavior of based on the Landau-Zener
tunneling theory and on a Fisher's type real-space renormalization group
analysis of the relevant gaps. The model proposed shows therefore a
paradigmatic example of how an adiabatic quantum computation can become very

Chopped random-basis quantum optimization
In this work we describe in detail the "Chopped RAndom Basis" (CRAB) optimal
control technique recently introduced to optimize t-DMRG simulations
[arXiv:1003.3750]. Here we study the efficiency of this control technique in
optimizing different quantum processes and we show that in the considered cases
we obtain results equivalent to those obtained via different optimal control
methods while using less resources. We propose the CRAB optimization as a

Shaping the elite of Attalid Pergamon : a reappraisal of the epigraphic dossiers concerning priesthoods
The history of Hellenistic Pergamon is deeply affected by the dual status of a polis that also functioned as a dynastic residence. This overlap between civic and royal institutions significantly impacted the political life of the city. This paper contributes to the ongoing debate about honorific habits and the consolidation of the civic elite of Pergamon by focusing on the triangular interactions between the Attalids, their court, and the polis’ institutions in the period from Eumenes I to Attalos III. To do so, several dossiers concerning the priesthoods and religious liturgies of Attalid Pergamon will be reassessed by paying attention to their tenure, appointment, privileges, and the social groups that held these charges

Philetairos "Ktistes" and pergamon's civic memory in the post-attalid period
This paper provides a reappraisal of the representation of Philetairos as the new founder of Pergamon between the Hellenistic and the Imperial period. The link between Philetairos and the early development of Pergamon as a polis is reassessed in the wake of the recent archaeological scholarship and with particular attention to the occurrences of the toponym Philetaireia, by which the areas of the citadel urbanised before Eumenes II were known. The existence of a cult of Philetairos as Ktistes is possible but unproven for the Attalid period; conversely, its traces are evident in the late 2nd and 1st cent. BC. Finally, by reassessing the sources regarding the charge of "prytanis and priest (of Philetairos)" between 133/2 BC and the advent of the Principatus, it is possible to identify a rupture in the organisation of Pergamon’s civic memory at the beginning of the Imperial period. This overview shows that the characterisation of Philetairos as city founder in Pergamon’s civic memory was probably first shaped by his successors to spread a message of legitimacy but reached its peak in the century between the end of the Attalid dynasty and Augustus. At this time, the city looked at its grand past as a source of identity and prestige, with which the new ruling class wished to connect. Under the Empire, the legacy of Philetairos lost a great deal of its appeal without, however, causing the complete disappearance of Pergamon’s dynastic past from the memory of the civic elites
Dermatological remedies in the traditional pharmacopoeia of Vulture-Alto Bradano, inland southern Italy
Dermatological remedies make up at least one-third of the traditional pharmacopoeia in southern Italy. The identification of folk remedies for the skin is important both for the preservation of traditional medical knowledge and in the search for novel antimicrobial agents in the treatment of skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI). Our goal is to document traditional remedies from botanical, animal, mineral and industrial sources for the topical treatment of skin ailments. In addition to SSTI remedies for humans, we also discuss certain ethnoveterinary applications.
Field research was conducted in ten communities in the Vulture-Alto Bradano area of the Basilicata province, southern Italy. We randomly sampled 112 interviewees, stratified by age and gender. After obtaining prior informed consent, we collected data through semi-structured interviews, participant-observation, and small focus groups techniques. Voucher specimens of all cited botanic species were deposited at FTG and HLUC herbaria located in the US and Italy.
We report the preparation and topical application of 116 remedies derived from 38 plant species. Remedies are used to treat laceration, burn wound, wart, inflammation, rash, dental abscess, furuncle, dermatitis, and other conditions. The pharmacopoeia also includes 49 animal remedies derived from sources such as pigs, slugs, and humans. Ethnoveterinary medicine, which incorporates both animal and plant derived remedies, is addressed. We also examine the recent decline in knowledge regarding the dermatological pharmacopoeia.
The traditional dermatological pharmacopoeia of Vulture-Alto Bradano is based on a dynamic folk medical construct of natural and spiritual illness and healing. Remedies are used to treat more than 45 skin and soft tissue conditions of both humans and animals. Of the total 165 remedies reported, 110 have never before been published in the mainland southern Italian ethnomedical literature
Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars through the MAGIC glasses
The detection of Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs) in the Very High Energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) range is challenging, mainly because of their steep spectra in this energy band. Up to now, only five FSRQs are known to be VHE γ-ray emitters, all of them have been detected by the MAGIC telescopes, that discovered four of them in the VHE band. The observations in the VHE band are crucial to understand their emission, specially to constrain the location of the emitting region within the jet due to the absorption from their broad line region (BLR). Typically, FSRQs are detected during high flux states, enhancing the probability of detection with the current instruments sensitivities. However, the last observation campaigns performed with the MAGIC telescopes show emission during moderate states, thus challenging our understanding of the emission mechanisms in FSRQs. In this contribution, we give an overview and present the most recent results of the three FSRQs 3C279, PKS1222+21 and PKS1510-089 in a multi-wavelength context with special focus on MAGIC and Fermi-LAT simultaneous observations
High-fidelity quantum driving
The ability to accurately control a quantum system is a fundamental
requirement in many areas of modern science such as quantum information
processing and the coherent manipulation of molecular systems. It is usually
necessary to realize these quantum manipulations in the shortest possible time
in order to minimize decoherence, and with a large stability against
fluctuations of the control parameters. While optimizing a protocol for speed
leads to a natural lower bound in the form of the quantum speed limit rooted in
the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, stability against parameter variations
typically requires adiabatic following of the system. The ultimate goal in
quantum control is to prepare a desired state with 100% fidelity. Here we
experimentally implement optimal control schemes that achieve nearly perfect
fidelity for a two-level quantum system realized with Bose-Einstein condensates
in optical lattices. By suitably tailoring the time-dependence of the system's
parameters, we transform an initial quantum state into a desired final state
through a short-cut protocol reaching the maximum speed compatible with the
laws of quantum mechanics. In the opposite limit we implement the recently
proposed transitionless superadiabatic protocols, in which the system perfectly
follows the instantaneous adiabatic ground state. We demonstrate that
superadiabatic protocols are extremely robust against parameter variations,
