Large-scale Nonlinear Variable Selection via Kernel Random Features
We propose a new method for input variable selection in nonlinear regression.
The method is embedded into a kernel regression machine that can model general
nonlinear functions, not being a priori limited to additive models. This is the
first kernel-based variable selection method applicable to large datasets. It
sidesteps the typical poor scaling properties of kernel methods by mapping the
inputs into a relatively low-dimensional space of random features. The
algorithm discovers the variables relevant for the regression task together
with learning the prediction model through learning the appropriate nonlinear
random feature maps. We demonstrate the outstanding performance of our method
on a set of large-scale synthetic and real datasets.Comment: Final version for proceedings of ECML/PKDD 201
An increase in nitric oxide produced by rat peritoneal neutrophils is not involved in cell apoptosis
Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) obtained from carrageenin-stimulated peritoneal cavities of rats, but not blood PMN, spontaneously produced nitric oxide (NO) when incubated in vitro. Incubation of the cells with the NO synthase inhibitors, L-imino-ethyl-L-ornithine (L-NIO) or NG-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA), inhibited NO production. This inhibition could be reversed by L-arginine. Incubation of PMN with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) failed to enhance NO production. Pretreatment of the rats with dexamethasone (DEXA) prior to carrageenin injection or incubation of PMN with the glucocorticoid in vitro partially inhibited the spontaneous release of NO. On the other hand, when PMN obtained from DEXA pretreated rats were incubated in vitro with DEXA, NO synthase activity and hence NO generation were almost abolished. A similar inhibition was also observed following the addition of L-NIO or cycloheximide to cultures of carrageenin-elicited PMN. The NO production by PMN did not appear to be related to cell viability or apoptosis. Indeed, neither the blockade of NO generation by L-NIO nor the incubation of the neutrophils with a NO donor, S-nitroso-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP) modified the pattern of LDH release or DNA fragmentation. In summary, it appears that PMN migration triggers a continuous NO synthesis, and that NO produced by these cells is not related to their apoptosis

Shape recognition through multi-level fusion of features and classifiers
Shape recognition is a fundamental problem and a special type of image classification, where each shape is considered as a class. Current approaches to shape recognition mainly focus on designing low-level shape descriptors, and classify them using some machine learning approaches. In order to achieve effective learning of shape features, it is essential to ensure that a comprehensive set of high quality features can be extracted from the original shape data. Thus we have been motivated to develop methods of fusion of features and classifiers for advancing the classification performance. In this paper, we propose a multi-level framework for fusion of features and classifiers in the setting of gran-ular computing. The proposed framework involves creation of diversity among classifiers, through adopting feature selection and fusion to create diverse feature sets and to train diverse classifiers using different learn-Xinming Wang algorithms. The experimental results show that the proposed multi-level framework can effectively create diversity among classifiers leading to considerable advances in the classification performance
An Empirical Study of the Mexican Banking System's Network and Its Implications for Systemic Risk
With the purpose of measuring and monitoring systemic risk, some topological properties of the interbank exposures and the payments system networks are studied. We propose non-topological measures which are useful to describe the individual behavior of banks in both networks. The evolution of such networks is also studied and some important conclusions from the systemic risks perspective are drawn. A unified measure of interconnectedness is also created. The main findings of this study are: the payments system network is strongly connected in contrast to the interbank exposures network; the type of exposures and payment size reveal different roles played by banks; behavior of banks in the exposures network changed considerably after Lehmans failure; interconnectedness of a bank, estimated by the unified measure, is not necessarily related with its assets size
Measurement of the low-energy antitriton inelastic cross section
In this Letter, the first measurement of the inelastic cross section for antitriton–nucleus interactions is reported, covering the momentum range of 0.8≤p<2.4 GeV/c. The measurement is carried out using data recorded with the ALICE detector in pp and Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon of 13 TeV and 5.02 TeV, respectively. The detector material serves as an absorber for antitriton nuclei. The raw yield of (anti)triton nuclei measured with the ALICE apparatus is compared to the results from detailed ALICE simulations based on the [Formula presented] toolkit for the propagation of (anti)particles through matter, allowing one to quantify the inelastic interaction probability in the detector material. This analysis complements the measurement of the inelastic cross section of antinuclei up to A=3 carried out by the ALICE Collaboration, and demonstrates the feasibility of the study of the isospin dependence of inelastic interaction cross section with the analysis techniques presented in this Letter
First Measurement of the |t| Dependence of Incoherent J/ψ Photonuclear Production
The first measurement of the cross section for incoherent photonuclear production of J/ψ vector mesons as a function of the Mandelstam |t| variable is presented. The measurement was carried out with the ALICE detector at midrapidity, |y|<0.8, using ultraperipheral collisions of Pb nuclei at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sNN=5.02 TeV. This rapidity interval corresponds to a Bjorken-x range (0.3-1.4)×10-3. Cross sections are given in five |t| intervals in the range 0.04<|t|<1 GeV2 and compared to the predictions by different models. Models that ignore quantum fluctuations of the gluon density in the colliding hadron predict a |t| dependence of the cross section much steeper than in data. The inclusion of such fluctuations in the same models provides a better description of the data
Measurement of the non-prompt D-meson fraction as a function of multiplicity in proton-proton collisions at = 13 TeV
The fractions of non-prompt (i.e. originating from beauty-hadron decays) D0
and D+ mesons with respect to the inclusive yield are measured as a function of the
charged-particle multiplicity in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s =
13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The results are reported in intervals of
transverse momentum (pT) and integrated in the range 1 < pT < 24 GeV/c. The fraction
of non-prompt D0 and D+ mesons is found to increase slightly as a function of pT in
all the measured multiplicity intervals, while no significant dependence on the charged-
particle multiplicity is observed. In order to investigate the production and hadronisation
mechanisms of charm and beauty quarks, the results are compared to PYTHIA 8 as well
as EPOS 3 and EPOS 4 Monte Carlo simulations, and to calculations based on the colour
glass condensate including three-pomeron fusion
