Option valuation of timberland under price uncertainty
Traditional methods of forest valuation assume that management behavior is fixed over time: each timber harvest occurs at a fixed future date regardless of the evolution of timber prices. This study incorporates option value - the ability to delay an irreversible decision - into forest land valuation through an adaptive harvesting strategy. When option value is ignored, long term investments are undervalued. The optimal adaptive harvesting strategy increases the net present value of land between 29.7 and 35.1 percent relative to a fixed rotation strategy
What Explains the Incidence of the Use of a Common Sediment Control on Lots with Houses Under Construction?
To analyze compliance with one aspect of the regulation of stormwater discharge, we estimate a random-utility model of the probability that a builder uses a silt fence to control sediments on a lot with a house under construction in an urbanizing county of South Carolina. The probability increases if the builder is responsible to the subdivision’s developer or if a homeowners association exists. The probability also increases as the cost to install a silt fence decreases or the number of houses under construction per built house in a subdivision increases. Pseudorandom Noise Code-Based Technique for Cloud and Aerosol Discrimination Applications
NASA Langley Research Center is working on a continuous wave (CW) laser based remote sensing scheme for the detection of CO2 and O2 from space based platforms suitable for ACTIVE SENSING OF CO2 EMISSIONS OVER NIGHTS, DAYS, AND SEASONS (ASCENDS) mission. ASCENDS is a future space-based mission to determine the global distribution of sources and sinks of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). A unique, multi-frequency, intensity modulated CW (IMCW) laser absorption spectrometer (LAS) operating at 1.57 micron for CO2 sensing has been developed. Effective aerosol and cloud discrimination techniques are being investigated in order to determine concentration values with accuracies less than 0.3%. In this paper, we discuss the demonstration of a PN code based technique for cloud and aerosol discrimination applications. The possibility of using maximum length (ML)-sequences for range and absorption measurements is investigated. A simple model for accomplishing this objective is formulated, Proof-of-concept experiments carried out using SONAR based LIDAR simulator that was built using simple audio hardware provided promising results for extension into optical wavelengths. Near-Peer Teaching in Radiology Symposia: A Success Story in Residents as Teachers
INTRODUCTION
Peer learning and near-peer teaching have been described in many specialties, less so in Radiology. We present near-peer teaching whereby residents present a series of didactic sessions at the course outset in the form of “symposia” and perform a scholarly activity in the form of teaching. We aim to demonstrate how near-peer teaching in symposia front-loaded within an introductory radiology course can improve medical student satisfaction.
METHOD
A total of 169 students were enrolled over a period of 3 years, 55 before (2017-2018) and 114 (2018-2020) after the introduction of the symposium. Anonymous course evaluations were collected from all students. In addition, 240 fourth-year medical students who also attended symposium lectures received satisfaction surveys in 2019 and 2020.
RESULTS
All (169/169, 100%) students taking the course evaluated it. Overall evaluation scores rose from 8.3/10 to 9.0/10 post-symposia. Among student satisfaction surveys, 89/240 (37%) specifically commented on symposia; 91% (80/89) of those found symposia very or extremely informative. 29/71 (41%) of all residents were able to participate in the symposia, 20/29 in multiple years throughout residency, allowing them to fulfill the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education interpersonal and communication skills core competencies and meet scholarly activity requirements.
CONCLUSION
Near-peer teaching in the form of resident-taught interactive didactics grouped in symposia can have a positive outcome on medical student satisfaction
Identification of the donor in GRS 1915+105
We report on the results of medium-resolution spectroscopy of GRS 1915+105 in
the H and K band using the 8m VLT at ESO. We clearly identify absorption
bandheads from CO12 and CO13. Together with other features this results in a

The Bionic Bra: Using electromaterials to sense and modify breast support to enhance active living
Background: Although the most supportive sports bras can control breast motion and associated breast pain, they are frequently deemed uncomfortable to wear and, as a result, many women report exercise bra discomfort. Given that exercise bra discomfort is associated with decreased levels of physical activity, there is a pertinent need to develop innovative solutions to address this problem. Objectives: This research aimed to evaluate the use of electromaterial sensors and artificial muscle technology to create a bra that was capable of detecting increases in breast motion and then responding with increased breast support to enhance active living. Methods: The research involved two phases: (i) evaluating sensors suitable for monitoring and providing feedback on changes in the amplitude and frequency of breast motion, and (ii) evaluating an actuator capable of changing breast support provided by a bra during activity. Results: When assessed in isolation, the developed technologies were capable of sensing breast motion and actuating to provide some additional breast support. Conclusions: The challenge now lies in integrating both technologies into a functional sports bra prototype, and assessing this prototype in a controlled biomechanical analysis to provide a breast support solution that will enable women to enjoy active living in comfort
Charge screening and magnetic anisotropy in metallic rare-earth systems
The calculation of magnetic anisotropy constants is performed beyond the
point charge model for a continuous charge density distribution of screening
conduction electrons. An important role of the non-uniform electron density, in
particular, of the Friedel oscillations, in the formation of crystal field is
demonstrated. Such effects can modify strongly the effective ion (impurity)
charge and even change its sign. This enables one to justify the anion model,
which is often used at discussing experimental data on hydrogen-containing
systems. Possible applications to the pure rare-earth metals and RCo5 compounds
are discussed. The deformation of magnetic structure near the interstitial
positive muon owing to the strong local anisotropy, and the corresponding

Sortilin regulates sorting and secretion of Sonic hedgehog
Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) is a secreted morphogen that is an essential regulator of patterning and growth. The Shh full-length protein undergoes autocleavage in the ER to generate the biologically active amino-terminal ShhN fragment, which is destined for secretion. Few receptors have been identified that control the trafficking of this morphogen through the secretory pathway. We identified Sortilin (Sort1), a member of the VPS10P domain receptor family, as a novel Shh trafficking receptor. We demonstrate that Sort/Shh interact using co-IP and proximity ligation in transfected cells and that they co-localize to the Golgi. Sort1 overexpression causes re-distribution of ShhN, and to a lesser extent ShhFL, to the Golgi and reduces Shh secretion. We show loss of Sort1 can partially rescue Hedgehog-associated patterning defects in a mouse model of deficient Shh processing and that Sort1 levels negatively regulate anterograde Shh transport in axons in vitro and Hh-dependent axon-glial interactions in vivo Taken together, we conclude that Shh and Sort1 can interact at the level of the Golgi and that Sort1 directs Shh away from the pathways that promote its secretion
Increasing chlamydia screening tests in general practice: A modi fied Zelen prospective cluster randomised controlled trial evaluating a complex intervention based on the theory of planned behaviour
Objective: To determine if a structured complex intervention increases opportunistic chlamydia screening testing of patients aged 15-24 years attending English general practitioner (GP) practices.
Methods: A prospective, Cluster Randomised Controlled Trial with a modified Zelen design involving 160 practices in South West England in 2010. The intervention was based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). It comprised of practice-based education with up to two additional contacts to increase the importance of screening to GP staff and their confidence to offer tests through skill development (including videos). Practical resources (targets, posters, invitation cards, computer reminders, newsletters including feedback) aimed to actively influence social cognitions of staff, increasing their testing intention.
Results: Data from 76 intervention and 81 control practices were analysed. In intervention practices, chlamydia screening test rates were 2.43/100 15-24-yearolds registered preintervention, 4.34 during intervention and 3.46 postintervention; controls testing rates were 2.61/ 100 registered patients prior intervention, 3.0 during intervention and 2.82 postintervention. During the intervention period, testing in intervention practices was 1.76 times as great (CI 1.24 to 2.48) as controls; this persisted for 9 months postintervention (1.57 times as great, CI 1.27 to 2.30). Chlamydia infections detected increased in intervention practices from 2.1/1000 registered 15-24-year-olds prior intervention to 2.5 during the intervention compared with 2.0 and 2.3/1000 in controls (Estimated Rate Ratio intervention versus controls 1.4 (CI 1.01 to 1.93).
Conclusions: This complex intervention doubled chlamydia screening tests in fully engaged practices. The modified Zelen design gave realistic measures of practice full engagement (63) and efficacy of this educational intervention in general practice; it should be used more often.
