A large number of studies on real-time writing processes apply methods and techniques for data collection, under experimental methodological conditions. This article presents a multimodal capture system (visual, audio and written), which provides the researcher with simultaneous information of the writing process across the time and space of the classroom (ecological and didactic context). Visual recording is done through video cameras, capturing the context of the classroom and the interaction between students and teacher; audio recording is done through digital recorders and microphones, capturing the spontaneous speech of the writing process of students and the dialogue between the participants; the written registration is performed through smart pens and the HandSpy program, capturing the pen strokes on the sheet of paper. We describe each of these instruments, how they are used and the synchronization technique, generating a single media (film-synchronized). To illustrate how the Ramos System works, its importance and the advantages it offers to better understand the process of textual production (textual genesis) in didactic and ecological context, we present a qualitative and microgenetic analysis of spontaneous pauses made by a pair of students (9 years old) while writing an invented story.

The use of social media by public agents, including politicians, is an ordinary practice throughout countries, part of the daily life of the public administration and States are currently dealing with the challenge of social media regulation. This article aims to show how social media has become a government toll throughout the years and how public agents and institutions are using this mechanism as part of the administrative routine. One of the key points is that the use of social media by governments is part of the movement to transform transparency and publicity, both from an internal point of view and for the public arena’s engagement in social participation. Based on this, the article presents the results of a research conducted to identify if social media regulation is dealing with this scenario. In Brazil, the issue of social media use in the public sector is relevant because the country has approximately 9 million public agents, and around 242 million smartphone users. Brazilian politicians have personal accounts with loads of followers. A general social media regulation in the country is being drafted – while Courts deals with content control and blocking cases. This article analyses how rules and regulations are assessing the matter, specifically if its text includes provisions for public agents or public institutions. The main goal is to identify whether there is a differentiation by the rules on the author of the content or content sharing. It investigates if there are differences on how regulations handle public and private persons. The comparative research was conducted in 8 countries and in the European Union sphere and has identified two models regarding social media regulation design. The results were compared to the Brazilian case, which presented some particularities in a comparative perspective. The research adopted the concept of regulation in an extended way. In the conclusion, a roadmap for regulators in Brazil is proposed, with three elements to be considered when drafting a social media regulation. The roadmap intends to provide guidance for regulators when dealing with the challenge of regulating social media, considering the importance of properly identifying its subject

Multi-sensor Framework for Heart Rate and Blood Oxygen Saturation Monitoring of Human Body

    Get PDF
Cardiovascular diseases have been the cause of death for millions of people. Some of these deaths could be avoided if there was a signi cant increase of diagnosis for the detection of such diseases. This diagnosis, in turn, could be realized with the increased availability of robust and low-cost medical diagnostic devices. Integrated technology sensors available on wearable devices have been commonly used to read physiological data in users (patients). Particularly the pulse oximetry sensors, o ers a unique, non-invasive method that can be used to detect the severity of such diseases. This evaluation of the physical condition of the patient for certain diseases is possible due to non-invasive measurement through photoplethysmography, which allows the extraction of heart rate and oxygen saturation in the blood. Since some diseases diagnoses require simultaneous monitoring of blood oxygen saturation values at various sites in the body, a project has been developed to perform such reading of physiological data. This thesis presents the development of a systems platform based on the use of multiple pulse oximetry sensors connected to an application developed for a mobile device though a wireless connection. The purpose of this platform is to provide an easy-to-read experience of health data that can be analyzed to diagnose cardiovascular disease symptoms, aiding in an early diagnosis. The complete structure as well as the aspects of the analysis and implementation of the systems related to the proposed architecture are described in this dissertation

In this paper is obtained an algebraic-computational property related to the theory of SAGBI bases for the specific case of the kernel of some locally nilpotent derivations on the polynomial ring in several variables over a eld of characteristic zero. The result achieved via explicit calculation is an algebraic characterization and a nite SAGBI basis for the kernel of a certain class of locally nilpotent derivations

Aligning Natural Resource Conservation, Flood Hazard Mitigation, and Social Vulnerability Remediation in Florida

Flooding continues to be the most common and damaging of all natural disasters in the United States. In 2016, twelve individual weather and climate events caused more than 1billionindamageseach.During2016,theU.S.washitbyatleastfiveoncein1,000yearsprecipitationevents,andseverefloodsresultedinmorethan1billion in damages each. During 2016, the U.S. was hit by at least five once-in-1,000 years precipitation events, and severe floods resulted in more than 17 billion in damages. Currently, more than 5.5 million active policies under the National Flood Insurance Program, underwrite more than 1.6trillioninassets.Since1978,NFIPhaspaidoutmorethan1.6 trillion in assets. Since 1978, NFIP has paid out more than 38 billion in claims – nearly 30% was paid to the 1% of properties classified as “repetitive loss properties” (RLPs). Flood impacts are determined by a complex interaction between physical hazards, the vulnerability of a society or social-ecological system, and its exposure to such hazards. The extent and severity of impacts are amplified by challenging socioeconomic dynamics, including poorly planned urban development, lack of access to resources, social vulnerability, and poverty. Addressing this complex interaction between hazards, exposure and social vulnerability, this study identifies and prioritizes land in Florida, where multiple management benefits can be achieved: flood exposure reduction, habitats restoration, and social vulnerability remediation. In a targeted case-study, our model identified 144 RLPs in Miami-Dade County located in areas where high social vulnerability, high flood exposure, and natural habitats coexist. Collectively, these 144 RLPs filed at least 320 claims against NFIP between 1978 and 2011. The multiple benefits of the presented approach include: reduction of flood exposure; reduction of NFIP’s financial impact; restoration of the floodplain to a more natural condition; and the identification of efficient application of federal funds. We argue that government funded buyouts, followed by structure demolition and/or relocation, and the restoration of floodplain habitats, can support social, environmental, and economic objectives, as long as such projects are executed in a thoughtful and fair manner

Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Information Management, specialization in Marketing IntelligenceThe objective of this study is to understand how the advent of technologies can help to bring more tourists to the Santiago de Compostela Portuguese Path. Considering some information collected, there is an enormous difference between the number of peregrines that choose the French path to reach the destination instead of the Portuguese path. Regarding this situation, this study aims to understand the motivations, behaviors and needs of the peregrines during their quests with the ambition to bring valuable information for the Portuguese tourism market, based on a bibliographic analysis of studies of smart tourism, Experiential marketing, tourism marketing and a investigation of the information collected on interviews with peregrines that have already finished the Portuguese path and a research on official websites that guide the tourists planning their route

Differences between stereotypical gender and definitional gender in pronominal antecedent retrieval in Brazilian Portuguese

Together with Alves (2019), this paper is part of a research work dedicated to investigating the role of gender cues in pronominal antecedent retrieval in Brazilian Portuguese. The main aim is to determine whether Principle B structural constraints work as an initial filter in pronominal antecedent retrieval in Brazilian Portuguese, or whether gender cues play a major role at early processing phases since this language has visible redundant morphological markings. It is also examined whether antecedent candidates carrying different gender cues have different weights in memory. In the present work, a comparison between antecedent candidates carrying stereotypical gender and definitional gender was provided. The results of two eye-tracking experiments conducted with native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese showed that gender morphological cues play a role at the very beginning of pronoun resolution processing, and only at a later processing phase, structural constraints of Principle B seemed to help the parser to select the correct antecedent. Like the previous work, the results indicated Principle B structural constraints do not work as an initial filter blocking structurally unacceptable candidates in Brazilian Portuguese; on the contrary, all candidates seemed to be taken into account despite of violating Principle B structural constraints. Similarly to the previous work, masculine antecedent candidates were preferable to be retrieved by memory in comparison to feminine candidates. Moreover, the results indicated that candidates with definitional gender rather than stereotypical gender are preferable to be retrieved by memory since the former is lexically specified, while the latter relies on probabilities based on world knowledge inferences.  Together with Alves (2019), this paper is part of a research work dedicated to investigating the role of gender cues in pronominal antecedent retrieval in Brazilian Portuguese.
