    Sedimentary record of coseismic subsidence in Hersek coastal lagoon (Izmit Bay, Turkey) and the late Holocene activity of the North Anatolian Fault

Copyright @ 2011 American Geophysical Union.The late Holocene activity of a restraining bend of the northern strand of the North Anatolian Fault in Izmit Bay was investigated by a sedimentological, geochemical, and paleoecological analysis of sediment cores from Hersek coastal lagoon, NW Turkey. The sediment cores show a succession of sedimentary sequences composed of three units separated by gradual transitions. The first unit is composed of a thin layer of shell debris-rich sediment in abrupt contact with the underlying organic-rich deposits. This unit is over-lain by a thick foraminifera-rich mud deposit, and the sequences are capped by an organic-rich mud unit. These sequences are interpreted as silting up, shallowing upward deposits, typical of a lagoon becoming isolated from the sea. We suggest that they represent the sedimentary signature of coseismic subsidence, which was caused by reverse slip at the Hersek bend, and tsunamis in Izmit Bay. Our radiocarbon-dated paleoseismological record indicates (1) the atypical collapse of the hanging wall during the 740 earthquake and (2) subsidence of the footwall during the 987, 1509, and 1719 earthquakes. This study contributes to the understanding of the dynamics of restraining bends, and it highlights the potential of coastal sediments for reconstructing past earthquakes and tsunamis in regions dominated by strike-slip deformations.This article is available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fun

    The value of laparoscopic classifications in decision on definitive surgery in patients with nonpalpable testes: our experience and review of the literature

    Background/purpose The aim of the study was to present our clinical experience with the laparoscopic approach in patients with nonpalpable testes (NPTs) and review the literature on laparoscopic classifications.Materials and methods Between May 2010 and August 2012, 30 boys with NPT (mean age 3.9 years) underwent laparoscopy as a part of diagnosis and treatment in our clinic. The laparoscopic findings were classified into four types according to Castilho. The patients were managed according to the presence or position of the testes and testicular vessels.Results Six patients were excluded from the study. Twenty-six testicular units (19 left, three right, and four bilateral units) in 24 patients were managed laparoscopically. Laparoscopy was terminated in eight patients in whom blind-ending cord structures were detected intra-abdominally. An inguinal canal exploration was performed in 10 cases in whom cord structures were seen entering the internal inguinal ring. No viable testis was found, and testicular remnants were excised for histopathologic examination. Four canalicular testes (peeping) were treated with open orchiopexy. Laparoscopy-assisted orchiopexy without vascular ligation was performed in two testes. Fowler-Stephens orchiopexy in single stage was performed in one testicular unit and in two stages in another unit. All patients were discharged on the same day. The testes were normal in size and found in the scrotum after a mean follow-up period of 14 months.Conclusion The laparoscopic findings in NPT had an important influence on treatment decisions. To be able to interpret the definitive surgery relative to the laparoscopic classification, collaborative studies are required. Keywords: laparoscopy, nonpalpable testis, nubbin, orchiopexy, vas deferen

    Data report: Carbon isotopic composition of dissolved CO2, CO2 gas, and methane, Blake-Bahama Ridge and northeast Bermuda Rise, ODP Leg 172

    Carbon isotopic data of interstitial dissolved CO2 (ΣCO2), CO2 gas, and methane show that a variety of microbial diagenetic processes produce the observed isotopic trends. Anaerobic methane oxidation (AMO) is an important process near the sulfate-methane interface (SMI) that strongly influences the isotopic composition of ΣCO2 in the sulfate reduction and upper methanogenic zones, which in turn impacts methane isotopic composition. Dissolved CO2 and methane are maximally depleted in 3C near the SMI, where C values are as light as –31.8‰ and –101‰ PDB for ΣCO2 and methane, respectively. CO2 reduction links the CO2 and methane pools in the methanogenic zone so that the carbon isotopic composition of both pools evolves in concert, generally showing increasing enrichments of C with increasing depth. These isotopic trends mirror those within other methane-rich continental rise sediments worldwide

    The automotive industry is a dynamic industry that is constantly evolving and changing with the advancements of technology. As cars become more technology dependent, the threat landscape and likelihood of a cyber-attack becomes greater and inherently larger as issues arise. With the introduction to automation and increased use of embedded systems and infotainment systems, modern cars have become a pillar piece of the Internet of Things network. This research details an in-depth study into the vulnerabilities and risks surrounding the current and future state of the automotive industry, highlights the most safety-critical components of the modern car, providing a holistic threat landscape to improve security awareness and posture regarding automotive security. It also demonstrates the utilisation of this analysis with the integration of an education package built on top of a hardware module based on a Raspberry Pi, that emulates its own CAN Bus network that individuals can interact with as if it was a vehicle to provide education on CAN hacking. This device has the potential to be attached to education ranges and labs which can help educate individuals on different security skills to help improve security awareness and knowledge

    Comparative analysis of tunisian sheep-like virus, bungowannah virus and border disease virus infection in the porcine host

    Apart from the established pestivirus species Pestivirus A to Pestivirus K novel species emerged. Pigs represent not only hosts for porcine pestiviruses, but are also susceptible to bovine viral diarrhea virus, border disease virus (BDV) and other ruminant pestiviruses. The present study focused on the characterization of the ovine Tunisian sheep-like virus (TSV) as well as Bungowannah virus (BuPV) and BDV strain Frijters, which were isolated from pigs. For this purpose, we performed genetic characterization based on complete coding sequences, studies on virus replication in cell culture and in domestic pigs, and cross-neutralization assays using experimentally derived sera. TSV forms a distinct phylogenetic group more closely related to Pestivirus C (classical swine fever virus, CSFV) than to Pestivirus D (BDV). In contrast to BDV and BuPV, TSV replicates by far more efficiently on ovine than on porcine cells. Nevertheless, pigs were susceptible to TSV. As a consequence of close antigenic relatedness of TSV to CSFV, cross-reactivity was detected in CSFV-specific antibody assays. In conclusion, TSV is genetically closely related to CSFV and can replicate in domestic pigs. Due to close antigenic relatedness, field infections of pigs with TSV and other ruminant pestiviruses can interfere with serological diagnosis of classical swine fever

    Sedimentary archives host a wealth of information that can be used to reconstruct paleoclimate as well as the tectonic and volcanic histories of specific regions. Long and continuous archives from the oceans have been collected in thousands of locations by scientific ocean drilling programs over the past 40 years. In contrast, suitable continental archives are rare because terrestrial environments are generally nondepositional and/or subject to erosion. Lake sediments provide ideal drilling targets to overcome this limitation if suitable lakes at key locations have existed continuously for a long time

    Pro- and Anti-Inflammatory Cytokine Balance in Major Depression: Effect of Sertraline Therapy

    The specific associations between antidepressant treatment and alterations in the levels of cytokines remain to be elucidated. In this study, we aimed to explore the role of IL-2, IL-4, IL-12, TNF-α, TGF-ÎČ1, and MCP-1 in major depression and to investigate the effects of sertraline therapy. Cytokine and chemokine levels were measured at the time of admission and 8 weeks after sertraline treatment. Our results suggest that the proinflammatory cytokines (IL-2, IL-12, and TNF-α) and MCP-1 were significantly higher, whereas anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-4 and TGF-ÎČ1 were significantly lower in patients with major depression than those of healthy controls. It seems likely that the sertraline therapy might have exerted immunomodulatory effects through a decrease in the proinflammatory cytokine IL-12 and an increase in the anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-4 and TGF-ÎČ1. In conclusion, our results indicate that Th1-, Th2-, and Th3-type cytokines are altered in the depressed patients and some of them might have been corrected by sertraline treatment
