    Property rights protection and access to bank loans: Evidence from private enterprises in China

    Poor protection of private property has limited the access to bank loans by private enterprises in developing and transition economies. Under those circumstances, private entrepreneurs have resorted to various ways of enhancing the de facto protection of private property.     Multiple Description Video Coding Using Joint Frame Duplication/Interpolation

    Multiple description coding (MDC) is a promising alternative to combatting information loss without any retransmission. In this paper, an effective MD video codec is designed based on temporal pre- and post-processing of video sequences without modifying the actual coding process itself, which makes it compatible with the current standard source or channel codec. For ease of post-processing, motion-compensated interpolation (MCI) based on piecewise uniform motion assumption is adopted to estimate the lost frame in side decoding. Accordingly, to match the post-processing, in the pre-processing joint frame duplication/interpolation is first applied to the original video data before performing odd/even frame splitting, which attempts to make the motion variety in the generated descriptions piecewise uniformly thus achieving better side reconstructed quality based on MCI. The experimental results exhibit better performance of the proposed scheme than some other tested schemes, in both the on-off channel environment and packet loss network

    Uncertainty in Labor Productivity and Specific Human Capital Investment

    Uncertainty in labor productivity (ULP) is affected by many factors, such as worker-employer matching, technology, and macroeconomic conditions. Not surprisingly, ULP varies across forms, industries, and economies. how do variations in ULP affect specific human capital (SHC) investment, wage, and labor turnover? A fixed-wage model is used to show that the answer depends critically on the initial level of ULP. The model is also used to show that wage and SHC are always positively correlated, but SHC investment and labor turnover do not have a monotonic relationship.     The Tongde Picritic Dikes in the Western Yangtze Block: Evidence for Ca. 800-Ma Mantle Plume Magmatism in South China during the Breakup of Rodinia

    Secondary ion mass spectroscopy U-Pb zircon ages and mineralogical, geochemical, and Nd isotopic data are reported for the Tongde picritic dikes in the Yanbian area of the western Yangtze Block, South China. The picritic dikes, which intruded in the ca. 820-Ma Tongde complex, are dated at 796+-5 Ma. Most of the picritic rocks are highly porphyritic (ca. 15–35 vol% phenocrysts) with dominant olivine (Fo = 82–92) phenocrysts that are high in CaO (up to 0.43 wt%), Cr2O3, and Ni. All the studied rocks are high-Ti and alkaline in composition and exhibit light rare earth element– enriched and “humped” incompatible trace-element patterns, similar to the alkaline basalts within the ocean islands and continental rifts. Variably high εNd(T) values between +6.9 and +8.7 indicate that these rocks were derived from an asthenospheric mantle source with inappreciable crustal contamination. Geochemical modeling suggests a primary melt of 22.7% MgO for batch melting and 21.4% MgO for fractional melting. The high MgO content in the modelled primary magmas implies a minimum melt temperature of >1400˚C and a mantle potential temperature of 1600˚– 1620˚C. The Tongde picritic dikes were therefore generated by melting of an anomalously hot mantle source with a potential temperature ca. 200˚C higher than that of the ambient mid-ocean ridge basalt–source mantle, similar to that of modern mantle plumes. Thus, the Tongde picritic dikes provide solid petrological evidence for the proposed Neoproterozoic mantle plume that led to the breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia

    Transition routes of electrokinetic flow in a divergent microchannel with bending walls

    Electrokinetic flow can be generated as a highly coupled phenomenon among velocity field, electric conductivity field and electric field. It can exhibit different responses to AC electric fields in different frequency regimes, according to different instability/receptivity mechanisms. In this investigation, by both flow visualization and single-point laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) method, the response of AC electrokinetic flow and the transition routes towards chaos and turbulence have been experimentally investigated. It is found, when the AC frequency ff<30f_f<30 Hz, the interface responds at both the neutral frequency of the basic flow and the AC frequency. However, when ff>=30f_f>=30 Hz, the interface responds only at the neutral frequency of the basic flow. Both periodic doubling and subcritical bifurcations have been observed in the transition of AC electrokinetic flow. We hope the current investigation can promote our current understanding on the ultrafast transition process of electrokinetic flow from laminar state to turbulence

    ψ(3770)\psi(3770) and BB meson exclusive decay Bψ(3770)KB \to \psi(3770) K in QCD factorization

    Belle has observed surprisingly copious production of ψ(3770)\psi(3770) in BB meson decay Bψ(3770)KB\to \psi(3770)K, of which the rate is comparable to that of Bψ(3686)KB\to \psi(3686)K. We study this puzzling process in the QCD factorization approach with the effect of S-D mixing considered. We find that the soft scattering effects in the spectator interactions play an essential role. With a proper parametrization for the higher twist soft end-point singularities associated with kaon, and with the S-D mixing angle θ=12\theta=-12^{\circ}, the calculated decay rates can be close to the data. Implications of these soft spectator effects to other charmonium production in BB exclusive decays are also emphasized.Comment: journal versio

    Dietary inclusion of fermented ginger straw effect on the growth performance, gastrointestinal tract development and caecal fermentation of fattening rabbits

    [EN] This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary inclusion of fermented ginger straw on the growth performance, gastrointestinal tract development and caecal fermentation of fattening rabbits. A total of 160 45-d-old Laiwu black rabbits were randomly divided into 4 groups and fed 0% (Control), 5, 10 or 15% fermented ginger straw in their diet as a replacement for peanut straw powder. The trial lasted for 7 d of adaptation and 43 d for testing. Growth performance was recorded from 52 to 95 d of age (n=5 per treatment with 30 rabbits, 3 males and 3 females per replicate), TTAD of nutrients from 91 to 95 d of age, and gastrointestinal tract development, caecum fermentation and carcass traits were determined at 95 d of age (n=5 per treatment with 10 rabbits, 1 males and 1 females in per replicate).The results showed that the average daily gain and final body weight in the experimental groups (5, 10 and 15% fermented ginger straw) were higher than in the control group (P&lt;0.05). However, the average daily feed intake in the 15% group was higher than in the other groups, while the total tract apparent digestibility of crude protein, ether extract, neutral detergent fibre and acid detergent fibre were lower than in the control group (P&lt;0.05), and the relative weights of the stomach, small intestine and caecum content in the 15% substitution group were higher than those in the control group (P&lt;0.05). In addition, the thickness of the muscle layer in the 15% substitution group was higher than that in the other groups (P&lt;0.05). Moreover, pH and total volatile fatty acids concentration in the caecal content were similar among the 4 groups (P&gt;0.05).     Monitoring land cover change and disturbance of the Mount Wutai World Cultural Landscape Heritage Protected Area based on Remote Sensing time-series image from 1987 to 2018

    The contextual-based multi-source time-series remote sensing and proposed Comprehensive Heritage Area Threats Index (CHATI) index are used to analyze the spatiotemporal land use/land cover (LULC) and threats to the Mount Wutai World Heritage Area. The results show disturbances, such as forest coverage, vegetation conditions, mining area, and built-up area, in the research area changed dramatically. According to the CHATI, although different disturbances have positive or negative influences on environment, as an integrated system it kept stable from 1987 to 2018. Finally, this research uses linear regression and the F-test to mark the remarkable spatial-temporal variation. In consequence, the threats on Mount Wutai be addressed from the macro level and the micro level. Although there still have some drawbacks, the effectiveness of threat identification has been tested using field validation and the results are a reliable tool to raise the public awareness of WHA protection and governance
