A cosmological concordance model with dynamical vacuum term
We demonstrate that creation of dark-matter particles at a constant rate
implies the existence of a cosmological term that decays linearly with the
Hubble rate. We discuss the cosmological model that arises in this context and
test it against observations of the first acoustic peak in the cosmic microwave
background (CMB) anisotropy spectrum, the Hubble diagram for supernovas of type
Ia (SNIa), the distance scale of baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) and the
distribution of large scale structures (LSS). We show that a good concordance
is obtained, albeit with a higher value of the present matter abundance than in
the \Lambda CDM model. We also comment on general features of the CMB
anisotropy spectrum and on the cosmic coincidence problem.Comment: Revised version. Accepted for publication in Physics Letters
Evaluation of the RAPID score as a predictor of postoperative morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing pulmonary decortication for stage III pleural empyema
Objective: : This study aims to correlate the RAPID score with the 3-month survival and surgical results of patients undergoing lung decortication with stage III pleural empyema. Methods: : This was a retrospective study with the population of patients with pleural empyema who underwent pulmonary decortication between January 2019 and June 2022. Data were collected from the institution's database, and patients were classified as low, medium, and high risk according to the RAPID score. The primary outcome was 3-month mortality. Secondary outcomes were the length of hospital stay, readmission rate, and the need for pleural re-intervention. Results: : Of the 34 patients with pleural empyema, according to the RAPID score, patients were stratified into low risk (23.5 %), medium risk (47.1 %), and high risk (29.4 %). The high-risk group had a 3-month mortality of 40 %, while the moderate-risk group had a 6.25 % and the low-risk group had no deaths within 90 days, confirming a good correlation with the RAPID score (p < 0.05). Sensitivity and specificity for the primary outcome in the high-risk score were 80.0 % and 79.3 %, respectively. The secondary outcomes did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: : In this retrospective series, the RAPID score had a good correlation with 3-month mortality in patients undergoing lung decortication. The morbidity indicators did not reach statistical significance. The present data justifies further studies to explore the capacity of the RAPID score to be used as a selection tool for treatment modality in patients with stage III pleural empyema
On the equivalence between Implicit Regularization and Constrained Differential Renormalization
Constrained Differential Renormalization (CDR) and the constrained version of
Implicit Regularization (IR) are two regularization independent techniques that
do not rely on dimensional continuation of the space-time. These two methods
which have rather distinct basis have been successfully applied to several
calculations which show that they can be trusted as practical, symmetry
invariant frameworks (gauge and supersymmetry included) in perturbative
computations even beyond one-loop order.
In this paper, we show the equivalence between these two methods at one-loop
order. We show that the configuration space rules of CDR can be mapped into the
momentum space procedures of Implicit Regularization, the major principle
behind this equivalence being the extension of the properties of regular
distributions to the regularized ones.Comment: 16 page
Agricultura familiar, multifuncionalidade da agricultura e ruralidade: interfaces de uma realidade complexa.
Nas últimas décadas, assistimos à revitalização do debate em torno da agricultura familiar pela incorporação das discussões sobre as múltiplas funções da agricultura num rural que não pode mais ser visto como domÃnio exclusivo da atividade agrÃcola e dos agricultores. No contexto brasileiro, acreditamos que essa discussão deva ser permeada pela análise de como processos diferenciados de distribuição fundiária e desenvolvimento econômico e o tipo de agricultura resultante geram ruralidades especÃficas com caracterÃsticas como, no caso da agricultura familiar, a manutenção de práticas sociais e de trabalho marcadas pelas relações de parentesco e vizinhança presentes numa sociedade de interconhecimento. Partindo desse princÃpio, este trabalho analisa a agricultura familiar de um bairro rural do municÃpio de Ouro Fino - MG, sua herança histórica e sua participação na criação de uma paisagem natural e humana que muito contribui para a atratividade da região
Observational tests for \Lambda(t)CDM cosmology
We investigate the observational viability of a class of cosmological models
in which the vacuum energy density decays linearly with the Hubble parameter,
resulting in a production of cold dark matter particles at late times.
Similarly to the flat \Lambda CDM case, there is only one free parameter to be
adjusted by the data in this class of \Lambda(t)CDM scenarios, namely, the
matter density parameter. To perform our analysis we use three of the most
recent SNe Ia compilation sets (Union2, SDSS and Constitution) along with the
current measurements of distance to the BAO peaks at z = 0.2 and z = 0.35 and
the position of the first acoustic peak of the CMB power spectrum. We show that
in terms of statistics both models provide good fits to the data and
similar results. A quantitative analysis discussing the differences in
parameter estimation due to SNe light-curve fitting methods (SALT2 and MLCS2k2)
is studied using the current SDSS and Constitution SNe Ia compilations. A
matter power spectrum analysis using the 2dFGRS is also performed, providing a
very good concordance with the constraints from the SDSS and Constitution

A parametric model for dark energy
Determining the mechanism behind the current cosmic acceleration constitutes
a major question nowadays in theoretical physics. If the dark energy route is
taken, this problem may potentially bring to light new insights not only in
Cosmology but also in high energy physics theories. Following this approach, we
explore in this paper some cosmological consequences of a new time-dependent
parameterization for the dark energy equation of state (EoS), which is a well
behaved function of the redshift over the entire cosmological evolution,
i.e., . This parameterization allows us to divide the
parametric plane in defined regions associated to distinct classes
of dark energy models that can be confirmed or excluded from a confrontation
with current observational data. A statistical analysis involving the most
recent observations from type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillation peak,
Cosmic Microwave Background shift parameter and Hubble evolution is
performed to check the observational viability of the EoS parameterization here
