Circadian variation in gastric vagal afferent mechanosensitivity
Food intake is coordinated to cellular metabolism by clock gene expression with a master clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus synchronized by light exposure. Gastric vagal afferents play a role in regulating food intake, but it is unknown whether they exhibit circadian variation in their mechanosensitivity. We aimed to determine whether gastric vagal afferents express clock genes and whether their response to mechanical stimuli oscillates throughout the light/dark cycle. Nodose ganglia were collected from 8-week-old female C57BL/6 mice every 3 h starting at lights off (1800 h) to quantify Bmal1, Per1, Per2, and Nr1d1 mRNA by qRT-PCR. Additionally in vitro single-fiber recordings of gastric vagal mechanoreceptors were taken at all time points. Per1, Per2, Bmal1, and Nr1d1 mRNA is expressed in the nodose ganglia and levels oscillated over a 24 h period. In mice fed ad libitum, gastric content was 3 times higher at 0000 h and 0300 h than 1200 h. The response of tension receptors to 3 g stretch was reduced by up to 70% at 2100 h, 0000 h, and 0300 h compared with 1200 h. Gastric mucosal receptor response to stroking with a 50 mg von Frey hair was 3 times greater at 1200 h and 1500 h than the response at 0000 h. Similar findings were obtained in mice fasted for 6 h or maintained in darkness for 3 d before study. Therefore, these changes do not result from food intake or the light/dark cycle. Thus, gastric vagal mechanoreceptors display circadian rhythm, which may act to control food intake differentially at different times of the day.Stephen J. Kentish, Claudine L. Frisby, David J. Luminosity distance and redshift in the Szekeres inhomogeneous cosmological models
The Szekeres inhomogeneous models can be used to model the true lumpy
universe that we observe. This family of exact solutions to Einstein's
equations was originally derived with a general metric that has no symmetries.
In this work, we develop and use a framework to integrate the angular diameter
and luminosity distances in the general Szekeres models. We use the affine null
geodesic equations in order to derive a set of first-order ordinary
differential equations that can be integrated numerically to calculate the
partial derivatives of the null vector components. These equations allow the
integration in all generality of the distances in the Szekeres models and some
examples are given. The redshift is determined from simultaneous integration of
the null geodesic equations. This work does not assume spherical or axial
symmetry, and the results will be useful for comparisons of the general
Szekeres inhomogeneous models to current and future cosmological data.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure, matches JCAP accepted versio
Ellipticity in Cosmic Microwave Background as a Tracer of Large-Scale Universe
Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 3-year data confirm the
ellipticity of anisotropies of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) maps, found
previously for Boomerang and WMAP 1-year high sensitivity maps. The low noise
level of the WMAP latter data enable also to show that, the ellipticity is a
property not described by the conventional cosmological model fitting the power
spectrum of CMB. As a large scale anomaly, the ellipticity characteristics are
consistent with the effect of geodesics mixing occurring in hyperbolic
Universe. Its relation to other large scale effects, i.e. to suppressed low
multipoles, as well as to dark energy if the latter is due to vacuum
fluctuations, is then an arising issue.Comment: to appear in Phys. Lett.
Constraints on diffuse neutrino background from primordial black holes
We calculated the energy spectra and the fluxes of electron neutrino emitted
in the process of evaporation of primordial black holes (PBHs) in the early
universe. It was assumed that PBHs are formed by a blue power-law spectrum of
primordial density fluctuations. We obtained the bounds on the spectral index
of density fluctuations assuming validity of the standard picture of
gravitational collapse and using the available data of several experiments with
atmospheric and solar neutrinos. The comparison of our results with the
previous constraints (which had been obtained using diffuse photon background
data) shows that such bounds are quite sensitive to an assumed form of the
initial PBH mass function.Comment: 18 pages,(with 7 figures
Foreground removal from WMAP 7yr polarization maps using an MLP neural network
One of the fundamental problems in extracting the cosmic microwave background
signal (CMB) from millimeter/submillimeter observations is the pollution by
emission from the Milky Way: synchrotron, free-free, and thermal dust emission.
To extract the fundamental cosmological parameters from CMB signal, it is
mandatory to minimize this pollution since it will create systematic errors in
the CMB power spectra. In previous investigations, it has been demonstrated
that the neural network method provide high quality CMB maps from temperature
data. Here the analysis is extended to polarization maps. As a concrete
example, the WMAP 7-year polarization data, the most reliable determination of
the polarization properties of the CMB, has been analysed. The analysis has
adopted the frequency maps, noise models, window functions and the foreground
models as provided by the WMAP Team, and no auxiliary data is included. Within
this framework it is demonstrated that the network can extract the CMB
polarization signal with no sign of pollution by the polarized foregrounds. The
errors in the derived polarization power spectra are improved compared to the
errors derived by the WMAP Team.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Scienc
CMBfit: Rapid WMAP likelihood calculations with normal parameters
We present a method for ultra-fast confrontation of the WMAP cosmic microwave
background observations with theoretical models, implemented as a publicly
available software package called CMBfit, useful for anyone wishing to measure
cosmological parameters by combining WMAP with other observations. The method
takes advantage of the underlying physics by transforming into a set of
parameters where the WMAP likelihood surface is accurately fit by the
exponential of a quartic or sextic polynomial. Building on previous physics
based approximations by Hu et.al., Kosowsky et.al. and Chu et.al., it combines
their speed with precision cosmology grade accuracy. A Fortran code for
computing the WMAP likelihood for a given set of parameters is provided,
pre-calibrated against CMBfast, accurate to Delta lnL ~ 0.05 over the entire
2sigma region of the parameter space for 6 parameter ``vanilla'' Lambda CDM
models. We also provide 7-parameter fits including spatial curvature,
gravitational waves and a running spectral index.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, References added, accepted for publication in

25-hydroxyvitamin D in pregnancy and genome wide cord blood DNA methylation in two pregnancy cohorts (MoBa and ALSPAC)
The aim of the study was to investigate whether maternal mid-pregnancy 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations are associated with cord blood DNA methylation. DNA methylation was assessed using the Illumina HumanMethylation450 BeadChip, and maternal plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D was measured in 819 mothers/newborn pairs participating in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort (MoBa) and 597 mothers/newborn pairs participating in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Across 473,731CpG DNA methylation sites in cord blood DNA, none were strongly associated with maternal 25-hydroxyvitamin D after adjusting for multiple tests (false discovery rate (FDR) > 0.5; 473,731 tests). A meta-analysis of the results from both cohorts, using the Fisher method for combining p-values, also did not strengthen findings (FDR > 0.2). Further exploration of a set of CpG sites in the proximity of four a priori defined candidate genes (CYP24A1, CYP27B1, CYP27A1 and CYP2R1) did not result in any associations with FDR < 0.05 (56 tests). In this large genome wide assessment of the potential influence of maternal vitamin D status on DNA methylation, we did not find any convincing associations in 1416 newborns. If true associations do exist, their identification might require much larger consortium studies, expanded genomic coverage, investigation of alternative cell types or measurements of 25-hydroxyvitamin D at different gestational time points
Multiscale Bone Remodelling with Spatial P Systems
Many biological phenomena are inherently multiscale, i.e. they are
characterized by interactions involving different spatial and temporal scales
simultaneously. Though several approaches have been proposed to provide
"multilayer" models, only Complex Automata, derived from Cellular Automata,
naturally embed spatial information and realize multiscaling with
well-established inter-scale integration schemas. Spatial P systems, a variant
of P systems in which a more geometric concept of space has been added, have
several characteristics in common with Cellular Automata. We propose such a
formalism as a basis to rephrase the Complex Automata multiscaling approach
and, in this perspective, provide a 2-scale Spatial P system describing bone
remodelling. The proposed model not only results to be highly faithful and
expressive in a multiscale scenario, but also highlights the need of a deep and
formal expressiveness study involving Complex Automata, Spatial P systems and
other promising multiscale approaches, such as our shape-based one already
resulted to be highly faithful.Comment: In Proceedings MeCBIC 2010, arXiv:1011.005
Five-Year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP)Observations: Beam Maps and Window Functions
Cosmology and other scientific results from the WMAP mission require an accurate knowledge of the beam patterns in flight. While the degree of beam knowledge for the WMAP one-year and three-year results was unprecedented for a CMB experiment, we have significantly improved the beam determination as part of the five-year data release. Physical optics fits are done on both the A and the B sides for the first time. The cutoff scale of the fitted distortions on the primary mirror is reduced by a factor of approximately 2 from previous analyses. These changes enable an improvement in the hybridization of Jupiter data with beam models, which is optimized with respect to error in the main beam solid angle. An increase in main-beam solid angle of approximately 1% is found for the V2 and W1-W4 differencing assemblies. Although the five-year results are statistically consistent with previous ones, the errors in the five-year beam transfer functions are reduced by a factor of approximately 2 as compared to the three-year analysis. We present radiometry of the planet Jupiter as a test of the beam consistency and as a calibration standard; for an individual differencing assembly. errors in the measured disk temperature are approximately 0.5%
Big Crunch Avoidance in k = 1 Semi-Classical Loop Quantum Cosmology
It is well known that a closed universe with a minimally coupled massive
scalar field always collapses to a singularity unless the initial conditions
are extremely fine tuned. We show that the corrections to the equations of
motion for the massive scalar field, given by loop quantum gravity in high
curvature regime, always lead to a bounce independently of the initial
conditions. In contrast to the previous works in loop quantum cosmology, we
note that the singularity can be avoided even at the semi-classical level of
effective dynamical equations with non-perturbative quantum gravity
modifications, without using a discrete quantum evolution.Comment: Minor changes, To appear in Physical Review
