Experimental determination of the 6s^2 ^1S_0 -> 5d6s ^3 D_1 magnetic-dipole transition amplitude in atomic ytterbium
We report on a measurement of the highly forbidden 6s^2 ^1S_0 \to 5d6s ^3
D_1 magnetic-dipole transition in atomic ytterbium using the
Stark-interference technique. This amplitude is important in interpreting a
future parity nonconservation experiment that exploits the same transition. We
find , where the larger uncertainty comes from the previously
measured vector transition polarizability . The amplitude is small

Possibility of an ultra-precise optical clock using the transition in Yb atoms held in an optical lattice
We report calculations designed to assess the ultimate precision of an atomic
clock based on the 578 nm transition in Yb atoms
confined in an optical lattice trap. We find that this transition has a natural
linewidth less than 10 mHz in the odd Yb isotopes, caused by hyperfine
coupling. The shift in this transition due to the trapping light acting through
the lowest order AC polarizability is found to become zero at the magic trap
wavelength of about 752 nm. The effects of Rayleigh scattering, higher-order
polarizabilities, vector polarizability, and hyperfine induced electronic
magnetic moments can all be held below a mHz (about a part in 10^{18}), except
in the case of the hyperpolarizability larger shifts due to nearly resonant
terms cannot be ruled out without an accurate measurement of the magic

E1 amplitudes, lifetimes, and polarizabilities of the low-lying levels of atomic ytterbium
The results of ab initio calculation of E1 amplitudes, lifetimes,and
polarizabilities for several low-lying levels of ytterbium are reported. The
effective Hamiltonian for the valence electrons has been constructed in the
frame of CI+MBPT method and solutions of many electron equation are found.Comment: 11 pages, submitted to Phys.Rev.
How dark the sky: the JWST backgrounds
We describe the sources of stray light and thermal background that affect
JWST observations; report actual backgrounds as measured from commissioning and
early science observations; compare those background levels to pre-launch
predictions; estimate the impact of the backgrounds on science performance; and
explore how the backgrounds probe the achieved configuration of the deployed
observatory. We find the observatory is limited by the irreducible
astrophysical backgrounds, rather than scattered stray light and thermal
self-emission, for all wavelengths micron, thus meeting the
level 1 requirement. This result was not assured given the open architecture
and thermal challenges of JWST, and is the result of meticulous attention to
stray light and thermal issues in the design, construction, integration, and
test phases. From background considerations alone, JWST will require less
integration time in the near-infrared compared to a system that just met the
stray light requirements; as such, JWST will be even more powerful than
expected for deep imaging at 1--5 micron. In the mid-infrared, the measured
thermal backgrounds closely match pre-launch predictions. The background near
10 micron is slightly higher than predicted before launch, but the impact on
observations is mitigated by the excellent throughput of MIRI, such that
instrument sensitivity will be as good as expected pre-launch. These measured
background levels are fully compatible with JWST's science goals and the Cycle

On the role of the upper part of words in lexical access : evidence with masked priming
More than 100 years ago, Huey (1908) indicated that the upper part of words was more relevant for perception than the lower part. Here we examined whether mutilated words, in their upper/lower portions (e.g., , , , ), can automatically access their word units in the mental lexicon. To that end, we conducted four masked repetition priming experiments with the lexical decision task. Results showed that mutilated primes produced a sizeable masked repetition priming effect. Furthermore, the magnitude of the masked repetition priming effect was greater when the upper part of the primes was preserved than when the lower portion was preserved âthis was the case not only when the mutilated words were presented in lowercase but also when the mutilated words were presented in uppercase. A Review of Interventions to Reduce Mechanical Restraint and Seclusion among Adult Psychiatric Inpatients
Objective: This review examines nature and effectiveness of interventions to reduce the use of mechanical restraint and seclusion among adult psychiatric inpatients.
Method: Electronic searches were conducted to locate post-1960 empirical studies of restraint and seclusion reduction in English. A total of 36 studies were identified, mostly from the USA. Analysis was conducted using a structured data extraction tool.
Results: The majority of studies reported reduced levels or mechanical restraint and/or seclusion, but the standard of evidence was poor. There were no randomised trials. Most were retrospective studies of official records before and after the intervention was introduced, with varying follow-up periods. The interventions were diverse, but tended to include one or more of the following: new restraint and/or seclusion policies, staffing changes, staff training, review procedures and crisis management initiatives. The research was unable to address which of these elements was most effective. There was also evidence that some improved outcomes were achieved by substituting restraint or seclusion for each other or for alternatives forms of containment (medication in particular). Nursesâ attitudes, skills and approach to patient care were absent from the literature.
Conclusions: Interventions probably can reduce the use of restraint and seclusion, but better designed research is required to demonstrate their effectiveness conclusively. More attention should also be paid to understanding how interventions work, particularly from the perspective of nursing staff. This is essential to the successful implementation of restraint and seclusion interventions across different psychiatric settings and treatment populations
Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.
BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF.
