Polystyrene-supported triphenylarsines: Useful ligands in palladium-catalyzed aryl halide homocoupling reactions and a catalyst for alkene epoxidation using hydrogen peroxide

The utility of both soluble (non-cross-linked) and insoluble (cross-linked) polystyrene-supported triphenylarsine reagents were examined. These reagents were prepared by standard radical polymerization methodology and used in palladium-catalyzed homocoupling reactions of aryl halides. The insoluble reagent was also used as a catalyst precursor in heterogeneous alkene epoxidation reactions in which aqueous hydrogen peroxide was the stoichiometric oxidant. For the aryl halide homocoupling reactions, both reagents worked well and afforded similar results. Unhindered aryl iodides afforded the best yields in the shortest reaction times compared to aryl bromides. The epoxidation reactions of unfunctionalized alkenes were not very efficient. This was probably due to the hydrophobicity of the polystyrene matrix, which did not swell in the reaction medium. Thus, since a microporous, gel-type polystyrene matrix was used, the majority of the arsine groups were inaccessible to the reaction components and therefore incapable of participating in catalysis. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Method and means for producing fluorocarbon finishes on fibrous structures

An improved process and apparatus is provided for imparting chemically bonded fluorocarbon finishes to textiles. In the process, the textiles are contacted with a gaseous mixture of fluoroolefins in an inert diluent gas in the presence of ultraviolet light under predetermined conditions

Requiem

The Requiem which is the centerpiece of this document is a musical composition for mixed choir and organ, written in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the M.M. in Music Composition. Additional instrumentation includes harp accompaniment for the setting of Psalm 23, and a handbell part for two of the anthems. This work is based on the text for Burial of the Dead (Rite Two) in the Book of Common Prayer of the Episcopal Church, which is in the Public Domain. It also incorporates several Scripture texts, including Isaiah 25:6-9 (New International Version) and Psalm 23 (King James Version) and an anthem based on John 14:1-6. The full text may be found in Appendix A. An introductory chapter describes the process of researching other Requiems, deciding on a text, choosing the musical settings for each text, and bringing the work to completion. Musical examples highlight the use of creative dissonance, rhythmic and metric diversity and textural variation within the work. The Requiem will be performed at the morning services of First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro on November 7, 2010, which is All Saints Sunday. In addition to the Requiem, other pieces were composed for those worship services, including an organ prelude and postlude, an opening hymn (text and music) and two responses for choir and congregation. These are included in Appendix B

Compatibility testing of spacecraft materials and space-storable liquid propellants

Compatibility measurements were made for aluminum 2219-T87 alloy and titanium 6Al-4V alloy in the presence of liquid fluorine and flox. Results of post test characterization after exposure durations of 61 and 70 weeks are presented. Results of the total test program are analyzed

Magnetospectroscopy of epitaxial few-layer graphene

The inter-Landau level transitions observed in far-infrared transmission experiments on few-layer graphene samples show a behaviour characteristic of the linear dispersion expected in graphene. Capital structure and its determinants in the United Kingdom – a decompositional analysis

Prior research on capital structure by Rajan and Zingales (1995) suggests that the level of gearing in UK companies is positively related to size and tangibility, and negatively correlated with profitability and the level of growth opportunities. However, as argued by Harris and Raviv (1991), 'The interpretation of results must be tempered by an awareness of the difficulties involved in measuring both leverage and the explanatory variables of interest'. In this study the focus is on the difficulties of measuring gearing, and the sensitivity of Rajan and Zingales' results to variations in gearing measures are tested. Based on an analysis of the capital structure of 822 UK companies, Rajan and Zingales' results are found to be highly definitional-dependent. The determinants of gearing appear to vary significantly, depending upon which component of debt is being analysed. In particular, significant differences are found in the determinants of long- and short-term forms of debt. Given that trade credit and equivalent, on average, accounts for more than 62% of total debt, the results are particularly sensitive to whether such debt is included in the gearing measure. It is argued, therefore, that analysis of capital structure is incomplete without a detailed examination of all forms of corporate debt

Upwelling-Level Acidification and pH/pCO2 Variability Moderate Effects of Ocean Acidification on Brain Gene Expression in the Temperate Surfperch, Embiotoca jacksoni

Acidification-induced changes in neurological function have been documented in several tropical marine fishes. Here, we investigate whether similar patterns of neurological impacts are observed in a temperate Pacific fish that naturally experiences regular and often large shifts in environmental pH/pCO2. In two laboratory experiments, we tested the effect of acidification, as well as pH/pCO2 variability, on gene expression in the brain tissue of a common temperate kelp forest/estuarine fish, Embiotoca jacksoni. Experiment 1 employed static pH treatments (target pH = 7.85/7.30), while Experiment 2 incorporated two variable treatments that oscillated around corresponding static treatments with the same mean (target pH = 7.85/7.70) in an eight-day cycle (amplitude ± 0.15). We found that patterns of global gene expression differed across pH level treatments. Additionally, we identified differential expression of specific genes and enrichment of specific gene sets (GSEA) in comparisons of static pH treatments and in comparisons of static and variable pH treatments of the same mean pH. Importantly, we found that pH/pCO2 variability decreased the number of differentially expressed genes detected between high and low pH treatments, and that interindividual variability in gene expression was greater in variable treatments than static treatments. These results provide important confirmation of neurological impacts of acidification in a temperate fish species and, critically, that natural environmental variability may mediate the impacts of ocean acidification
